WHY BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR? Being an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) can be a very rewarding career. You ll help people to learn an important skill for life and get a great deal of satisfaction when they pass their tests. There is also a huge amount of variety as you re likely to be teaching a number of different students each day - all with different levels of ability and needs. All sorts of people from all walks of life become driving instructors. Some decide on this career from the outset whilst many others re-train to be instructors following long careers in other industries. There are also many different motivations for becoming a driving instructor and - for the right people - it often becomes the best job they have ever had. In fact many successful instructors will tell you it doesn't even feel like work. But we must point out it is not for everybody. So it is important to ask yourself - why do you want to be a driving instructor? Our experience and research shows that in order to have the commitment and motivation to train to be a driving instructor, enjoy the job once qualified and be a success, you should be able to AGREE with at least two of the following statements: I want more control of over my work/life balance. I would love to choose the hours I work and take time off when I want. I want attractive earnings potential. I like the idea of charging for my professional tuition and building an income of 26-35K per year (full time earnings). I need job security. I don't want to face the risk of redundancy and I'm prepared to put in the training to acquire a new skill for life. I want to be my own boss. I don't like interviews, I don't like meetings and I want to be able to make my own decisions. I want real job satisfaction. I want to go to work with a smile on my face and enjoy the feeling of being paid for doing what I love.
HOW TO APPLY TO BECOME AN APPROVED DRIVING INSTRUCTOR To legally charge anyone (either money or monies worth) for driving instruction in a car you must either: be on the ADI register have a trainee s licence to give instruction issued by the ADI Registrar In order to be accepted onto the register, you must: Be over 21 Have had a full driving licence for a minimum of three years Have a manual driving licence Be considered to be a fit and proper person To decide if you re a fit and proper person, you will be required to undergo an Enhanced Criminal Record Check and the ADI Registrar will check to see if you have: had any motoring or non-motoring cautions or convictions been disqualified from driving any court proceedings pending against you any penalty points on your licence You could be committing a criminal offence if you seek to work as an ADI if you re banned or barred from working with children under 18. If you are confident you will meet to ADI registrar s criteria, you then need to visit the gov.uk website and complete the application process on-line. You can find this under driving and transport/teaching people to drive/apply to become a driving instructor. If you meet the minimum criteria and would pass a criminal record check, your application will be accepted but the process can take several weeks depending on your personal records.
IS THIS THE RIGHT JOB FOR YOU? You do not need any previous teaching experience or qualifications to become an ADI. However, as the training will require time, commitment and expenditure you should think carefully about whether or not the job is right for you before starting the ADI application process, As the job involves working with all sorts of people, you ll need a range of qualities and capabilities including: good people and communication skills patience and understanding a thorough knowledge of the theory and practice of driving an ability to teach and coach at all levels awareness of changes in the driving and driver instruction regulations business sense and organisation Of course some of these qualities and capabilities will need to be developed as part of your ADI training and your training provider should work with you to identify your existing strengths and areas for development. As you will be responsible for your own safety, that of your pupil and other road users you will also need to have: a high regard for all aspects of road safety a high standard of driving and instructional ability a professional approach to your customers, fellow instructors and examiners a responsible attitude to your pupils, profession and other road users
WHAT TRAINING DO YOU HAVE TO UNDERTAKE? Once you have been accepted onto the ADI register, you will need to train for and pass three tests in order to become an Approved Driving Instructor. These test are referred to as Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3. In each case, you must have passed the previous test before you can book the next. Part 1 is a theory test. The test takes around 1 hour 45 minutes and includes: multiple-choice questions hazard perception You must pass both parts at the same time to pass the test. There s no limit to how many times you can take the test. The current cost of the test is 81. Part 2 is a test of your driving ability. The test takes around 1 hour and includes: an eyesight test vehicle safety questions a test of your driving ability Throughout the test, your driving will be assessed by an examiner and you must have six faults or fewer to pass. The current cost of the test is 111. Part 3 is a test of your ability to instruct pupils. The test takes around one hour and includes an assessment of your: core competencies instructional techniques instructor characteristics The examiner will assess these by playing the role of 2 different pupils. The first pupil will be of someone who is a new or partly trained driver. The second pupil will be someone who is at test standard or a full licence holder. Each lesson will be marked from grades 1-6 and you must score 4 or higher in both tests to pass. The current cost of this test is 111.
MORE ABOUT PART 1 OF THE ADI TEST The test takes around 1 hour 45 minutes and is in two parts: multiple-choice questions hazard perception MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS You ll be asked 100 questions in total. There are 25 questions in each of these 4 categories: road procedure traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge driving test, disabilities, and the law publications and instructional techniques The question and several possible answers will appear on a computer screen. Some will need more than one answer. You can move between questions and flag questions that you want to come back to later. You re allowed up to 90 minutes to answer all of the questions. To pass, you must get: an overall score of at least 85 out of 100 at least 20 out of 25 in each of the 4 categories HAZARD PERCEPTION You ll be shown a video clip about how the hazard perception part works. You ll then be shown 14 clips that feature everyday road scenes. There ll be: 1 developing hazard in 13 of the clips 2 developing hazards in 1 of the clips A developing hazard is something that may cause you to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. You can score up to 5 points for each hazard. You need to score at least 57 points out of 75 to pass this part. The earlier you notice a developing hazard and make a response, the higher you score. You won t score anything for a clip if you click continuously or in a pattern. You ll get a pass certificate letter if you pass the test. You ll need this when you book and take your Part 2 test. You have 2 years from passing the ADI Part 1 test to qualify as an ADI. You ll need to take the ADI Part 1 test again if you haven t qualified as an ADI by then. There s no limit on the number of times you can take the part 1 test if you don t pass it.
MORE ABOUT PART 2 OF THE ADI TEST The test is approximately an hour includes: an eyesight test vehicle safety questions a test of your driving ability EYESIGHT TEST: You must be able to read a number plate from approximately 27 metres. If you need to use glasses or contact lenses to pass the eyesight test, you must wear them during the whole of the test. You ll fail the test if you don t pass the eyesight test and it will count as 1 of the 3 attempts you re allowed at the ADI part 2 test. VEHICLE SAFETY QUESTIONS: You ll be asked 5 vehicle safety questions. These are also known as show me, tell me questions. You ll get a driving fault for each incorrect answer you give. You ll get a serious fault and fail the test if you answer all 5 questions incorrectly. DRIVING ABILITY: You ll be asked to drive in varying road and traffic conditions, including motorways or dual carriageways where possible and you ll have to show the examiner all of the following: expert handling of the controls use of correct road procedure anticipation of the actions of other road users and then taking appropriate action sound judgement of distance, speed and timing consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users driving in an environmentally friendly manner a number of reversing manoeuvres a 10 minute section of independent driving Throughout the test, there are 3 types of faults that can be marked: a dangerous fault - involves actual danger to you, the examiner, the public or property a serious fault - could potentially be dangerous a driving fault - not potentially dangerous, but if you make the same fault throughout your test it could become a serious fault You ll pass your Part 2 test if you make no more than 6 driving faults (including the vehicle safety questions) and there are no serious or dangerous faults. You can take the test again if you fail the test at either your first or second attempt. If you fail again on your third attempt, you will have to wait 2 years from when you first passed the Part 1 test and then start the process again including registration.
MORE ABOUT PART 3 OF THE ADI TEST You ll be asked to deliver two 30 minute driving lessons to an examiner who will play the role of a different pupil for each lesson. In the first lesson they will play the role of a student who is a beginner or partly trained. In the second lesson they will play the role of someone who is at test standard or is a qualified driver requiring some development training. The examiner will stay in character as the pupil when the test starts but may come out of character to help make instructions clearer and for road safety reasons. Each lesson will cover a different aspect of driving. The examiner will choose the lesson subject from the following: safety precautions on entering the car and explanation of the controls moving off and making normal stops reversing the car and entering limited openings to the right or left turning the vehicle round in the road to face the opposite direction parking close to the kerb, using reverse gears practical instruction in how to use mirrors and make an emergency stop approaching and turning corners judgement of speed and general road positioning dealing with emerging at T-junctions dealing with all aspects of crossroads dealing with pedestrian crossings and giving appropriate signals meeting, crossing the path of and overtaking other vehicles Throughout the test (both lessons), the examiner will assess you against three main areas: core competencies instructional techniques instructor characteristics At the end of your Part 3 test, the examiner will grade your performance. You ll get a grade from 1 to 6 for the two parts of the test as shown below. You must get a grade 4 or higher for both parts to pass the test. Grade Overall performance 6 Very high 5 Good 4 Satisfactory 3 Inadequate 2 Poor 1 Extremely poor or dangerous When you pass Part 3, you can apply for your first ADI badge but you must do this within 12 months of passing the test, or you will have to register and pass all 3 qualifying tests again. You can take the test again if you fail the first or second attempt but if your fail on the third attempt, you will have to wait two years from when you passed Part 1 and then register and pass Part 1 and Part 2 tests again before being able to re-sit Part 3.
WORKING ON A TRAINEE LICENCE Although you can take your Part 3 test as soon as you have passed Part 2, many people opt for applying for a Trainee Licence instead. This is also commonly referred to as a Pink Licence or Pink Badge and is valid for 6 months. You will be given a Trainee Licence application form by the examiner when you pass Part 2. The Trainee Licence allows you to start working as a driving instructor straightaway so you can earn whilst continuing to study and prepare for your Part 3 test. It can also give you valuable experience of teaching real pupils. However, part of the Trainee Licence application process is to undertake at least 40 hours of Part 3 training which must be delivered by a registered ADI. You will also need to be sponsored by a driving school and both they and your trainer will need to complete the relevant forms which you will need to submit with your application. You are responsible for the use of your licence. You must not advertise yourself as if you were a fully qualified instructor. Your trainee licence shows the name and address of your training establishment/sponsor. You can only give instruction to students they provide you and are not allowed to work independently of your sponsor e.g. by setting up your own school. Whilst you are working on a Trainee Licence (which only lasts for six months), you will also need to have either at least 20% of all your lessons supervised by an ADI, or you must undertake a minimum of at least 20 hours of additional Part 3 training. You will normally be required to pay for this supervision or training. As there are both pros and cons to taking out a Trainee Licence, you should discuss your options with your training provider and take time to fully consider whether or not it is the best option for you.
WHAT OPTIONS DO YOU HAVE ONCE YOU RE FULLY QUALIFIED? When you have completed your training, you have a huge choice of options open to you. You can join any one of the many excellent franchises available with well established national driving schools such as Around the Bend; talk to local driving schools who may want an additional instructor; or set up your own business. As part of your training course, we will help you choose the best solution and career move for you. Of course, we would be delighted if you chose to take one of our excellent franchise packages, but we will help you to explore all of the options to help you make an informed decision. No matter which option you take though, you will be self-employed. This means you will need to notify HMRC of your employment status and we would suggest finding a qualified accountant to help you record your income and expenses and file your end of year tax return. Again we can give you advice and information if needed. And being self-employed means you have the flexibility to change the way you work over time. So for example, you could choose to take out an Around the Bend franchise package for a year or two whilst you are building up your experience, profile and customer base and then set up your own driving school once you have the confidence and knowledge to be self sufficient. If you do choose to join another driving school, either local or national, we strongly advise you to read the terms and conditions of their contract carefully as many insist on you signing a multi-year contract with expensive termination fees if you want to leave early even if they have not delivered on their promises of students and support.
HOW MUCH CAN YOU REALISTICALLY EARN? There are many reasons why people become driving instructors and undertake driver instructor training. The opportunity to change careers; the satisfaction of teaching an important life skill; the flexibility to balance work and family time as you want; the enjoyment of being you own boss; and of course financial reward. But exactly what can you earn as a fully qualified instructor and are the claims of 30K+ per year true? Let s take a quick look at the market conditions as they stand today. More people than ever are applying to take their driving test. Governments are focused on improving road safety and has introduced initiatives for more stringent testing. Companies are becoming more aware of the need to professionally train their fleet drivers. Improved standards in driver training are leading to higher lesson prices. The costs of fuel have fallen significantly and are likely to stay low for some time. All of these points suggest there has never been a better time to become a driving instructor and (as the table below shows) the earning potential is certainly good. But this is not your profit (or pay). In order to calculate that you will need to consider things like whether you want to operate as a franchisee or independent; how many hours a week you want to work; if you want to lease or buy a car; how much will you need to spend on marketing to attract a regular stream of new students etc. As part of your course with us, we will help you to work out what your earning potential is, as well as giving you helpful hints and tips to maximise your profits. AROUND THE BEND FRANCHISES Training to become an instructor with Around the Bend does not tie you in to one of our franchise packages. Once you pass your Part 3 test, you will automatically qualify for a three month trial franchise. This will give you the opportunity to test out our service and the level of support we give to you and all our instructors. If at the end of the trial you feel you would be better off on your own or with another driving school then you can simply walk away with no termination fees. If you decide you would like to continue with your Around the Bend franchise then we will issue you with a new six month contract which has a simple one month rolling termination clause.
