2 INTRODUCTION. The story I have chosen is "The Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister. It tells the story of the most beautiful fish in the ocean, which is asked to share one of his shining scales with a little blue fish, and to which he refuses. All the other fish in the sea leave him alone, and he wondered why. He goes to the wise octopus for advice, and she tells him to give away his scales. Rainbow Fish reluctantly does so, except for one. In the end, he is less beautiful than he was before, but he has new friends and is now the happiest fish in the sea. I chose this book because it can teach important values to the pupils. It asks the question if the consideration of happiness of all is reasonable at the cost of one's own happiness. It highlights the importance of sharing with the others and the value of friendship. It is a good book to work in class with because of its message and its simplicity in grammar and vocabulary. In this project I have designed a set of activities about the book to develop the following areas: Development of Language Skills (Vocabulary and Grammar). Development of Communicative Skills (Speaking and Listening). Personal Growth (learning about oneself and others, values). Autonomous Learning (making students responsible for their own learning). Interdisciplinary learning (relate your story with other subjects). Literary critics (working with literary elements of the story). Cross-curriculum topic. THE STORY. The Rainbow Fish was the most beautiful fish in the sea. But he never played with the other fish. I'm too beautiful, he thought. Once, a little blue fish asked for one of his shining scales, but the Rainbow Fish just laughed. "Never!" he said. After that, the other fish swam away from him. The Rainbow Fish was all alone. He went to the starfish for help. "Why doesn't anybody like me?" he asked. "Go ask the octopus", said the starfish. "She is very wise". The octopus said, "Give away your shining scales. You won't be as beautiful, but you will have friends". "I can't do that!" cried the Rainbow Fish. Suddenly the little blue fish was back. "Please," he said. "Could I have just one scale?" 2
3 Well, the Rainbow Fish thought. Maybe just one tiny scale. The little blue fish was so pleased, it made the Rainbow Fish feel happy. Soon all the fish came, and the Rainbow Fish gave away his scales, one by one. Finally he had only one shining scale left. But now, as he swam off to play with his friends, he was the happiest fish in the sea. OBJECTIVES. Language Skills. - Learn new words. Vocabulary of "sea creatures". - Learn and practice grammar contents (verbs-past simple). Communicative Skills. - Reduce public speaking fear. - Practice listening skills using a poem. - Answer to questions orally. - Share and debate personal experiences. Personal Growth. - Think about their own experiences and relate them to the story. - Develop the social ability of empathy. - Recognize that the own actions have effects and consequences. - Learn what means to be a good friend. 3
4 Autonomous Learning. - Be conscious and responsible of their own learning, using strategies to study and memorize the contents, specially the vocabulary. Interdisciplinary Learning. - Recognize the different parts of the fish. - Solve math problems. - Use their creativity in order to design a "Rainbow Fish" with different materials. Literary Critics. - Identify and describe the different elements of the story (characters, setting, problem, solution). Cross-curriculum Topic. - Apply the social abilities learnt with this book in the resolution of conflicts. TEACHING NOTES. Vocabulary. FILLING THE MISSING WORDS. In one of the activities, they should fill the gaps with missing words which appear in the story to complete the sentences. WORDSEARCH. In this one, they should look for some keywords of the story. Grammar. CATCH THE VERBS. Pupils will have to complete a table with the verbs of the story, making a difference between those which are in present simple and those in past simple. Listening. POEM. They will listen to a short poem about the story, they will have to try to write it down while they are listening to it. Then, we will correct it together and they will have to memorize it. Speaking. ANSWER TO THE COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS. They will be asked some comprehension questions about the story, to which they have to answer orally. In addition, they will have to speak in other activities. 4
5 Personal Growth. COLOUR YOUR FISH! The pupils should identify the actions of a good or a stinky friend and after that, they will write a summary of each one. MAKING CONNECTIONS. In this activity, students have to think about their life and try to relate the story with any experience. CAUSE-EFFECT. Students have to think about the effects that the actions of the Rainbow Fish have, completing a table. Interdisciplinary Learning. NATURAL SCIENCE- LABEL YOUR FISH! Pupils will have to complete the parts of the fish using a picture (mouth, fin, tail, gills, scales). ARTS AND CRAFTS- BUILD AN AQUARIUM! In groups and using different materials they will build an aquarium with a shoes box. It should have a variety of sea creatures and, of course, a Rainbow Fish. MATHS- SOLVE THE PROBLEM! They will work with math concepts using the scales of the Rainbow Fish. Literary Critics. IDENTIFY THE ELEMENTS OF THE STORY THROUGH MIND MAPPING. Students will have to complete a mind mapping with the elements of the story (characters, the Rainbow Fish and sea creatures; setting, the ocean; problem, the Rainbow Fish was lonely because he had no one to play with; and solution, the Rainbow Fish decided to share his beautiful scales with the other creatures in the ocean and he was happy). Cross-curriculum topic. THE CONSEQUENCES OF SELFISHNESS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SHARING. There will be a kind of debate in class, where pupils will discuss the effects of being a selfish person and the importance of generosity and the advantages of sharing things and feelings with the others. They can provide their personal experiences and we can try to solve some conflicts related to this topic. 5

7 GRAMMAR. CATCH THE VERBS! Look for all the verbs in the story and classify them in the following table: PRESENT SIMPLE PAST SIMPLE DEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS (LISTENING AND SPEAKING). You should organize yourselves in groups of 4-5 members. The task consists on designing and building an aquarium with a shoes box. You can use the materials that your prefer, but you have to include in your aquarium all the sea creatures that we have learnt with the book and, of course, a Rainbow Fish. 11 MATHS. SOLVE THE PROBLEM! The Rainbow Fish has 135 bright scales. He gives 70 to other fish. Then, 45 new scales grow in the body of the Rainbow Fish, but he loses 20. How many bright scales the Rainbow Fish has at the end? LITERARY CRITICS. IDENTIFY THE ELEMENTS OF THE STORY THROUGH MIND MAPPING. Complete the following mind map about the story "The Rainbow Fish". 12 CROSS-CURRICULUM TOPIC. THE CONSEQUENCES OF SELFISHNESS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SHARING. Let's debate in class how selfish people behave and the consequences of that kind of behaviour. Also we are going to talk about de positive effects of being generous and sharing with others. You can tell us any experience that you have lived related to this, and even we can try to solve some conflicts. It is important that you speak in turns, orderly, and respect the opinions and the feelings of the others. 12
