2 1. Introduction This instruction book has been produced to assist you in the correct use and maintenance of your clippers. However, if you have any queries not covered by this book please contact our specialist in-house service department who will be available during working hours to answer any enquiries. In particular: Keep your clippers out of the reach of children at all times. Never connect your mains clippers directly to the power source, always use a circuit breaker. Ensure that you have an adequate electrical supply which conforms to relevant safety standards. Never use a damp outdoor socket. Always switch your clippers off before connecting them to or disconnecting them from the power source. Disconnect your clippers whenever you are carrying out cleaning or maintenance, changing your clipper blades, or whenever your clippers are not in use. Regularly check your electric and battery leads, connectors and clippers for damage. Never clip a wet animal or clip in a damp or wet place. Always wear protective footwear, steel capped and rubber soled. A hard hat is also advised, especially when clipping a nervous or difficult horse. Tie long hair back and remove any loose jewellery. To protect your clothing wear an overall. Ensure that your clipping area is secure and free from obstacles. Avoid using long cable leads which you may trip over or the horse may stand on. Have an experienced assistant to hold the animal and to help you clip difficult areas. Do not burn or incinerate the battery clipper power pack. 2

5 4. Preparation a. Choose the correct Wolseley Clipper Blades To achieve the best clip it is essential to choose the correct Wolseley clipper blades. When choosing the most appropriate blades, you must consider; (a) type of animal (b) length of hair (c) condition of coat If you are in doubt as to which Wolseley clipper blades to use, we advise that you consult your Wolseley dealer for more detailed information. Wolseley offer four types of clipping blades: (i) A2 Original blades. Clipping height 2-3 mm. Use - horse/ clean cattle. (ii) A2F Fine blades. Clipping height 2mm. Use - veterinary surgical/ freeze branding cattle. (iii) A6 Coarse Blades. Clipping height 3mm. Use - horses with thick coats/ cattle. (iv) A7 Extra Coarse Blades. Clipping height 3-4mm. Use - coarse hair on cattle. Always use Wolseley clipper blades on your Wolseley clippers. b. Tensioning the Clipper Blades Your Wolseley clippers will arrive with the clipper blades on. Before you start clipping you will need to correctly tension your clipper blades so that they clip properly. To do this, turn the tension nut clockwise until it feels tight, and then loosen the blades by turning the tension nut anti-clockwise 4 turns. The mark on the top of the tension screw will assist you in determining how many turns you have done. It is important that you correctly tension your clipper blades. If they are too loose then they will not clip properly and if they are too tight they will wear out sooner and also put pressure on your clipper motor causing it to over-heat. turn tension nut clockwise until tight turn the tension nut 4 times anti-clockwise 5

6 c. Lubrication Before starting to clip you should lubricate your clippers by pouring a film of oil: onto the clipper blades between the clipper blades by turning the clipper head sideways into the opening(s) on top of the clipper head. Then switch on and run your clippers so that the oil spreads. Once the clippers are well lubricated, switch them off and wipe away any excess oil with a clean dry cloth. During clipping you should repeat this process regularly, approximately every 5-10 minutes, to stop the clipper blades running dry and the clipper motor overheating. You will need to brush any loose hair off the clipper blades first. We recommend that you only use the specially formulated Wolseley clipping oil. Never use diesel or WD 40 as this will damage your blades and your clippers. 5. Battery Pack Clippers 1. Charging the battery pack Before using your clippers you will need to charge the battery pack by connecting it to the charger and then plugging the charger into the mains supply. Plug the battery pack into the charger 6

7 The LED light indicator on the charger will show the different charge modes (see table below). The light will be yellow at first and then turn to orange as it starts charging. As the battery pack reaches full charge the light will turn to green with intermittent flashes of yellow ( top-off charge mode), and once it is fully charged, the light will turn to green only. LED Light Indicator It is not recommended to leave the battery pack charging for longer than 24 hours. To avoid damaging your battery pack by overcharging it there is a safety fuse which will cut off the power. If the charger detects a fault, an intermittent green and orange light will indicate the error. To reset the charger disconnect and then reconnect the power supply. A full charge takes 4½ hours but a new battery pack will not reach full charge until it has been fully charged and discharged approximately 5 times. This means that initially the clipping time maybe reduced until the battery pack has been charged sufficient times to reach full capacity. Topping up your battery pack by partial charging and discharging will not cause any damage. The amount of power topped-up will be proportionate to the amount of time charged. The charger is designed for indoor use only and should be kept dry at all times. The battery pack will gradually lose its charge over long periods of time and will therefore need fully recharging after storage. 8 2. Preparing to clip with battery pack clippers Disconnect the battery pack from the charger and the charger from the mains supply. Connect the clipper lead to the battery pack. Plug the clipper lead into the battery pack Place the battery pack into the bag provided and attach the bag to your belt or place the strap over your shoulder. Alternatively you may prefer to secure the battery pack in your pocket. Correctly tension and oil your clipper blades (see paragraphs 4.b and 4.c). A full charge lasts approximately 4½ hours. The clipper speed will noticeably reduce when the battery pack requires recharging. You will then need to stop clipping and recharge it. 6. Changing your Wolseley Clipper Blades (a) To remove your clipper blades for cleaning or in order to replace them with new ones: Switch off and unplug your clipper from the power supply. Remove the tension nut and spring completely by turning the nut anticlockwise. Carefully remove the clipper blades and separate them from the tension pin. Keep the pin in a safe place with the tension nut and spring. Wipe the clipper blades clean with dry cloth and brush away any loose hair between the clipper blades teeth. Likewise clean the clipper head. 8

9 (b) To replace the clipper blades with the same or new ones: Ensure that your clippers are switched off and unplugged. Clipper blades always come in pairs. Fit the upper blade (i.e. the shorter one) on the rectangular pins on the clipper head. Place the longer, lower blade onto the retaining lugs. Replace the tension pin and carefully holding the clipper blades and tension pin together turn the clippers over. Then replace the tension spring and nut and screw the clipper blades together until they begin to tighten. Before clipping, correctly tension you clipper blades by turning the tension nut clockwise until it is tight and then loosening it by turning it 4 times anti-clockwise. retaining lug clipper head rectangular pin bottom blade top blade WARNING: When changing or replacing blades on a Wolseley Swift clipper ensure that the crank roller (see page 3, fig.3) does not fall out or dislodge. The clipper will not clip successfully without it. 7. Motor Overload Reset Switch a. Mains Clippers The motor overload switch is an internal trip-switch to protect the mains clippers against damage from mechanical or electrical overloading (see page 4, fig.5). If the mains clippers are in danger of being damaged the switch will pop out and trip the electrical supply. The problems usually causing this are over-tensioning, lack of lubrication, blunt blades, defective motor, blocked air filters or faulty electrical supply. You must rectify the problem before resetting by pushing the switch back in and restarting your clippers. If the reset switch fails to stay in after having tripped try an alternative electric supply and if the reset trips again then you will need to return your clippers for inspection. (Note: The battery clippers do not have a reset switch.) 9

10 b. Battery Pack Clippers The battery pack clippers are fitted with an internal circuit breaker to protect the clippers from overloading this will trip the power supply from the battery pack switching off the motor. This is usually caused by the problems detailed on the previous page for the mains clippers such as blunt or clogged blades, lack of oil, over- tensioned blades, or, if the battery pack needs re-charging. If this happens switch the clippers off, identify and rectify the cause of the problem and then reset the clippers by switching them on again. DO NOT restart the machine unless you are sure you have rectified the problem otherwise damage maybe caused to the motor. 8. Air Filter (see page 4, fig.6) The air filter is positioned at the side or rear of your mains clipper depending on the model. (Note: Battery clippers do not have air filters). During clipping it is important that you keep the air filter clear by frequently brushing off any loose hair to stop the clipper motor from overheating. Once you have finished clipping, the air filter should be removed and cleaned by washing it in warm soapy water. slide air filter to remove 9. Blade Sharpening and Clipper Servicing and Repairs (a) Blade Sharpening Your Wolseley clipper blades will need regularly re-sharpening by our Wolseley specialist in-house service department. As soon as they start to get blunt, remove and clean the blades, place them wrapped in the clipper blade tin provided and take them to your nearest Wolseley clipping services agent. (b) Clipper Servicing and Repairs To prolong the life of your clippers and to ensure that they run smoothly we suggest that you get them serviced annually by our Wolseley service team who will also be able to carry out any repairs. Repairs are guaranteed for 6 months. Please note that all servicing and repairs should only be done by Wolseley otherwise your warranty will be invalidated. 10

11 10. Maintenance and Storage When you have finished using the clippers remove the clipper blades then clean and oil them and also the clipper head. Wipe off any excess oil using a clean dry cloth. Wrap both the blades in a clean cloth, put them in the Wolseley clipper blade tin and place them together with the clippers in the clipper carrying case. Store in a dry place out of reach of children. 11. Frequent Clipping Questions My blades won t cut Remove them and clean them as there may be hair between the blades. They may be blunt and need replacing with a sharp set. The tension might be too slack - consult page 5 to correctly tension. If there are lines showing on your horse you may not be overlapping adequately or there may be teeth missing from your blades. My clippers won t start Mains Clippers Check to see if the fuse has blown. Check to see if the overload button has popped out and needs resetting. Check any extension leads being used. Check your mains cable for any damage. Battery Clippers Check your battery or battery pack is fully charged. Check the connection between the battery pack and the clipper is firmly inserted. My machine is getting too hot Check the tensioning of the blades - if it is too tight the blades will run hot. Check that the air vents are free from obstruction (mains clippers only). Ensure that the blades are properly oiled with the correct type of oil. 11

12 12. Disposal These clippers should only be disposed of at a registered re-cycling facility or returned to Stockshop (L.E.) Ltd, Lodge Trading Estate, Broadclyst, Exeter EX5 3BS for recycling.
