2 Northeast Illinois Council Boy Scouts of America Outdoor Leader Skills Learning Objectives Test Guide References: First reference is the rank requirement (T Tenderfoot, S Second Class, F First Class) and requirement number itself. Page references are to the 12 th Edition Boy Scout Handbook SESSION 1 90 Minutes Approval 1. Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch. [T2] (302) a. TEST Describe how to properly set up a tent that you would use on a troop campout and make it secure for weather. 2. On one of these campouts, select your patrol site and sleep in a tent that you have pitched. [S3b] (249, ) a. TEST Describe how to select a camp site and what to check for safety and weather.. 3. Demonstrate how to whip and fuse the ends of a rope. [T4a] ( ) a. TEST Whip a natural fiber rope with whipping twine or dental floss, show the loop whipping method. Fuse a synthetic rope s end(s) with a lit candle or lighter. 4. Demonstrate that you know how to tie the following knots and tell what their uses are: two half hitches and the taut-line hitch. [T4b] ( ) 5. Discuss when you should and should not use lashings. [F7a] ( ) 6. Use lashing to make a useful camp gadget. [F7b] ( ) a. TEST List 2-3 useful camp gadgets. Describe how you would use lashings to make one camp gadget.

3 7. Demonstrate tying the timber hitch and clove hitch and their use in square, shear, and diagonal lashings by joining two or more poles or staves together. [F7a] ( , ) a. TEST Tie the timber hitch and then the clove hitch. Then as a team (1-3 people) tie an A-frame (travois) using two square lashings at the bottom two angles and a diagonal lashing at the top (point of the A ). 8. Demonstrate tying the bowline knot and describe several ways it can be used. [F8a] ( ) 9. Demonstrate proper care, sharpening, and use of the knife, saw, and ax, and describe when they should be used. [S3c] ( ) a. TEST actually show how to properly sharpen an ax or hatchet with a bastard file including how to secure it preparatory to sharpening. Actually show how to sharpen a pocket knife using a sharpening stone. 10. Use the knife, saw, and ax to prepare tinder, kindling, and fuel for a cooking fire. [S3d] ( ) a. TEST - Discuss how the knife, saw, and ax are used to prepare tinder, kindling, and fuel for a cooking fire. 11. Discuss when it is appropriate to use a cooking fire and a lightweight stove. Discuss the safety procedures for using both. [S3e] (325) 12. In an approved place and at an approved time, demonstrate how to light a fire and a lightweight stove. [S3f] ( ) a. TEST actually light a lightweight (backpacking) stove out of doors. Show how to properly care for it while lighting it and then running it (briefly). Properly turn it off and tell how to stow it when it would be cool enough to do so.

4 SESSION 2 45 Minutes 13. On a campout, assist in preparing and cooking one of your patrol's meals. Tell why it is important for each patrol member to share in meal preparation and cleanup, and explain the importance of eating together. [T3] (327, ) a. TEST Describe how, on a campout, you would assist in preparing and cooking one of your patrol's meals. b. TEST - Prepare a typical Duty Roster. Tell why it is important for each patrol member to share in meal preparation, cooking, and cleanup, and explain the importance of eating together. 14. On one campout, plan and cook over an open fire one hot breakfast or lunch for yourself, selecting foods from each group in the food pyramid. Explain the importance of good nutrition. Tell how to transport, store, and prepare the foods you selected. [S3g] (102, 316, , 326, 329, 339) a. TEST Describe how, on one campout, you would plan and cook over an open fire one hot breakfast or lunch for yourself, selecting foods from each group in the food pyramid. Help plan a patrol menu for one campout that includes at least one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner and that requires cooking at least two of the meals. TEST show the initial steps to check for and care for a chocking victim, and then properly demonstrate the position required for an abdominal thrust maneuver and how it would be done (without applying force). 21. Minor (thermal/ heat) burns or scalds (superficial or first-degree) (148) iv. Bites or stings of insects and ticks ( ) v. Venomous snakebite ( ) vi. Nosebleed (138) vii. Frostbite and sunburn (150,152) 22. Show what to do for "hurry" cases of stopped breathing, serious bleeding, and ingested poisoning. [S7a] ( ) 23. TEST describe what items would constitute a good personal first aid kit, why they are included, and how you would bring the kit along on outdoor activities.

Present yourself to your leader, properly dressed, before going on an overnight camping trip. Show the camping gear you will use. Show the right way to pack and carry it. [T1] ( , ) a. TEST - As a leader, describe what you expect to see in a properly dressed Scout before he goes on an overnight camping trip both summer and winter. Discuss the camping gear he will use. 9 35. Using a compass and a map together, take a five-mile hike (or 10 miles by bike) approved by your adult leader and your parent or guardian. (If you use a wheelchair or crutches, or it is difficult for you to get around, you may substitute "trip" for "hike"). [S1b] ( ) a. TEST do not take a hike. However, on a good topological map, show how you would use a compass, the map, and topological features to use triangulation to determine where you were located on the map (and in reality). 36.
