1 Phoenix Christian Elementary School Third Grade Social Studies Course Scope & Sequence COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will provide students with an understanding of the history of America through the lives of men and women who have played an important part in the forming of our great country. The emphasis is on patriotism, character development, and the contributions of these famous Americans. Beginning with Christopher Columbus, whom God sent to discover new land, to Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson who helped to form a new nation and ending with Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant who helped to heal a divided land. Students will also understand that these men were humans who made wise decisions but also made mistakes. It was through God and the prayers of Christians that these men helped to make America great. REQUIRED TEXTS AND *KEY SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIALS Our American Heritage: people in U.S. history A BEKA Our American Heritage: tests and quizzes Our American Heritage: map skills booklet COURSE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE First Quarter Christopher Columbus Key Concepts: The discovery of new world, geography review of continents and oceans, parts of a globe Assessments: Workbook Activities, Unit Tests. label a blank world map with continents and oceans Biblical Integration: Columbus thanks God after landing on the new world; we should also give thanks in all circumstances. John Smith Key Concepts: the founding and establishment of Jamestown, continued review of continents and oceans Assessments: Complete Workbook Activities and Unit Tests, make own world map placing continents and oceans in the correct locations, compare and contrast John Smith and George Washington. Biblical Integration: It takes work form all people to get a community working smoothly; He who does not work shall not eat (2 thess. 3:10) Pocahontas 1 Weeks Key Concepts: the saving of John Smith, more colonists sail to Jamestown, peace between colonists and Indians Assessments: Complete Workbook Activities and Unit Tests, Indian report and project.

2 Biblical Integration: Keep peace and live in harmony with one another; one way to do this is by helping each other. Miles Standish and Squanto 3 Weeks Key Concepts: Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock, locating Holland, Cape Cod, and Plymouth on a map, two cultures meets: the Europeans and the Indians, map key, directions/compass rose, grid, distance scale. Assessments: Unit Tests, Vocabulary Quizzes, and Workbook Activities, National Geographic supplement reading- Two Cultures Meet, finish Indian report/project Biblical Integration: God cares for all kinds of people, wherever they live and whatever their status. (Acts 10:34-35) Then Peter began to speak: I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts a man from every nation who fear him and do what is right. Second Quarter William Penn Key Concepts: A look at Quakers, Quaker colony of Pennsylvania is founded, locating Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and London on a map, persecution Assessments: Workbook Activities, Vocabulary Quizzes, and Unit Test. Biblical Integration God has placed others in authority over us so that we may obey them. God has given us rules so we know what is right and what is wrong. (Hebrews 13:17) Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. Benjamin Franklin Key Concepts: Electricity, American War for Independence, the Constitution, locating Boston, Massachusetts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and France on a map. Assessments: Complete Workbook Activities, Vocabulary Quizzes, and Unit Test, Demonstrate Knowledge and Ability Using Graphs, Map, and Globe Skills, create an invention. Biblical Integration: God governs the affairs of men, if a sparrow cannot fall with out God s notice then how can a country rise without God s help? George Washington and Thomas Jefferson 3 weeks Key Concepts: French and Indian war, declaration of Independence, Washington elected president, Jefferson 3 rd president. Assessment: tests, quizzes, maps, famous Americans portfolio with important documents. Page 2

3 Biblical Integration: God does not have to provide us with good leaders. There were wicked kings in the Bible. If we expect God to guide our country, we must love Him, serve Him and follow Him and ask for his guidance! Daniel Boone 1 week Key Concepts: wilderness vs. frontier, Indian raids, state of Kentucky Assessments: tests, quizzes, maps, video with questions on Daniel Boone, label states East of Kentucky Biblical integration: when all seems lost or impossible that s when God intervenes Third quarter Noah Webster and John Whittier 2 weeks Key Concept; first textbooks for school children, first American dictionary, Webster becomes a Christian, rhymes and verses Assessments: test, quiz, work sheets, and make a mini book of rhymes and other useful information. Biblical Integration: Most books change continuously to update information, but there is one book that has never changed and never will.the Bible. Robert E. Lee 2 weeks Key Concept: Civil War, confederate states and union states, Abraham Lincoln introduced Assessments: test, quiz, labeling confederate states and union states, state reports Biblical integration: study to show yourself approved, a workman not ashamed (2 Tim. 4:32) Abraham Lincoln 3 weeks Key Concepts: locating Springfield, Illinois, and Washington D.C. on a map, Lincoln as president, continuation of the Civil War and the discussion of confederate/union states. Assessments; Review states, test, quiz, worksheets, continue state report Biblical integration: Wisdom and courage come from God; stand up for what is right and stand with those who do right but part with evil and those who do wrong. Clara Barton 1 week Key Concept: The Red Cross, Barton as a teacher and nurse, refuge Assessment: tests, quizzes, ways I can help poster Biblical Integration: The Red Cross is a type of refuge. The Bible says that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Ps 46:10) whether in the battlefield or on a dark and stormy night, God is there! Page 3

(Mt. 6:8) Booker T Hooker and George Washington Carver 2 weeks Key Concepts: Freedom and slavery, treatment of blacks, slave raiders, locating Iowa, Missouri, and Alabama on a map, agriculture Assessment: test, quiz, worksheet, research famous blacks Biblical integration: To God we are all the same and we are free in Christ Laura Ingalls Wilder 2 weeks Key Concept; autobiography, biography, Wisconsin, Minnesota, changing names Assessments; quiz, group read/discussion on one of Wilder s books, compare and contrast chores of today to that of 100 years ago Biblical Integration; things are continually changing, but God and his word never change. Billy Sunday 1 week Key Concept: hard work before play, evangelist, character vs. reputation, first choir and nursery set up Assessment: quiz, worksheet, compare/ contrast church of today with that of Billy Sunday s time Biblical Integration: It is more important to have a good character before God than a good reputation before man. Reputation is what people think about you and character is what God knows about you.
