Statement of how the programme has been informed by the relevant subject benchmark statement(s)/professional and statutory body guidelines This post-graduate MSc programme has been built in accord with the guidelines of the UK professional body in the field the Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) - and has been accredited by it as satisfying the Institute's educational requirements for admission to Corporate Membership (a step leading to chartered professional status). The results of project EVETSIN (an independent study commissioned by the Department of Health and published in 1998), ranked our MSc programme in Medical Engineering and Physics as the best in the UK. From 2001 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, Vienna) has sent a number of specialists from various countries to study the organisation and delivery of this MSc programme, as an example for development of similar programmes in these countries. During December 2004 the original e-learning materials on medical physics, used in several of the modules of the MSc MEP Programme were awarded with the first ever international EU prize for education and training The Leonardo da Vinci Award. These materials were produced by an international team led by Dept. Medical Eng. & Physics at KCL & KCH. 19. Programme structure and award requirements (where relevant the information should also differentiate the particular requirements of pathways within a programme or linked/exit awards) (a) numbers of compulsory and optional modules to be taken in each year of the programme MSc: full-time students will take three core taught modules (totalling 75 credits), and optional taught modules (totalling 45 credits), plus a research module worth 60 credits, over one year (normally maximum two years). Part-time students will normally take the taught modules in the first year, and the research module in the second year, although it is possible to defer some of the modules into the second year (normally maximal length of part time is 3 years). In exceptional circumstances the maximal length of the course could be extended. PG Diploma: students must have successfully completed appropriate subjects on the course to a minimum of 120 credits at level M (this should include at least 3 core modules). (b) range of credit levels permitted within the programme Level 7 only (c) maximum number of credits permitted at the lowest level 195 (d) minimum number of credits required at the highest level 195

5 (e) progression and award requirements (if different from the standard) In order to be awarded the MSc degree the student has to collect 180 Credits, as follows: 1. Students must pass their MSc project Dissertation (60 Credits) with 50% minimum. - e.2. Students must pass all core modules (75 Credits) with an overall mark of 50% in each. Compensation will be permitted within modules, but not between modules, provided that the mark of an individual element of assessment does not fall below 40%. - e.3. Students may attempt all optional modules. They must pass 45 Credits from the optional modules with an overall mark of 50% in each. Compensation will be permitted within modules, but not between modules, provided that the mark of an individual element of assessment does not fall below 40%. Condonement (see below) in this 180 CATS MSc programme can be applied for one module (15 CATS). In order to be awarded the PGDip the student has to collect 120 Credits (as per e.2. and e.3. above) of which at least 60 Credits are from the core modules. The percentages of the overall assessment scheme given below will be used to calculate the award of a merit and distinction, according to the core scheme as set out in the Credit Framework Regulations of King s College London. (f) maximum number of credits permitted with a condoned fail (core modules excluded) At the discretion of the MSc MEP Programme Exam Board one optional module (15 Credits) may be condoned providing each of its elements is above 40%. (g) are students permitted to take a substitute module, as per regulation A3, 20.7? No (h) other relevant information to explain the programme structure The examination of optional modules is normally by coursework and written exams (2h each); the examination of core modules is normally by coursework, lab-work, and a written exam (2h each). The MSc projects are assessed as written theses (constituting 80% of the total mark) and oral examination (constituting 20%, based on interim report presentation and final oral examination of the project). Each examination of each element should satisfy the examiners in the MSc MEP Programme Exam Board.

8 PROGRAMME APPROVAL FORM SECTION 2 SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION Not all of the information in this section will be relevant for all programmes and for some programmes this section will not be relevant at all 1. Programme name MSc in Medical Engineering and Physics 2. If the programme is a joint award with an institution out with the University of London has the necessary approval been sought from Academic Board? Yes No Not applicable V Please attach a copy of the request to Academic Board 3. In cases of joint honours programmes please provide a rationale for the particular subject combination, either educational or academic N/A Which is the lead department and/or School? 4. If the programme involves time outside the College longer than a term, please indicate how the time will be spent, the length of time out and whether it is a compulsory or optional part of the programme N/A Year abroad Year in employment Placement Other (please specify) Time spent.. Compulsory/optional. 5. Please provide a rationale for any such time outside the College, other than that which is a requirement of a professional or statutory body N/A 6. Please give details if the programme requires validation or accreditation by a professional or statutory body The programme does not require validation or accreditation by a professional body, but is validated and accredited by the UK Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine (IPEM). Graduates who will seek (further in their career) a chartered professional status will need this accreditation. Name and address of PSB Institute of Physics & Engineering in Medicine, 230 Tadcaster Road, York YO24 1ES Date validation/accreditation commenced; TBC Date of last validation/accreditation: 2008

9 Frequency of validation/ accreditation every 5 years Date of next validation/ accreditation In cases where parts or all of the programme (other than those in box 4 above) are delivered either away from one of the College campuses and/or by a body or bodies external to the College please provide the following details Name and address of the off-campus location and/or external body Institute of Cancer Research Physics Department, Royal Marsden NHS Trust Downs Road, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5PT Percentage/amount of the programme delivered off-campus or by external body The collaboration of the programme with ICR does not normally affect the students taking Engineering optional taught modules. It affects mainly the students who take Physics optional MSc taught modules (Radiation Protection, Radiotherapy Physics, Medical Imaging with Ionising Protection, Medical Imaging with Non-Ionising Protection). For them it occupies approx. 110 contact hours. Nature of the involvement of external body The programme was initially developed to deliver the academic element of the hospital medical physics/engineering trainees and this way includes many contributors from the associated NHS Trusts to the Guy s King s and St Thomas School of Medicine of KCL (most being honorary lecturers to KCL). The Programme was originally delivered under the University of London as an Inter-Collegiate MSc programme (including KCL and ICR). Being managed and coordinated by Dept. Medical Engineering and Physics at KCL, the programme was transferred to KCL in Following this the link with the ICR continued (in the field of the Physics optional subjects), this Institution being one of the world-leading in the field. However the subjects delivered at ICR and their assessment include also lecturers from KCL. Description of the learning resources available at the off-campus location The learning resources at ICR are very similar to those at KCL. The benefit of the MEP MSc programme from this collaboration is mainly the student exposure to some of the latest radiological medical equipment and methods available at ICR. What mechanisms will be put in place to ensure the ongoing monitoring of the delivery of the programme, to include monitoring of learning resources off-site or by the external body? The Programme Director monitors regularly all subjects (including these delivered by ICR) by observing and commenting on lecture delivery, lecture notes, coursework and exams. Additionally, some KCL lecturers take part in the ICR subjects (and their planning) and the ICR lecturers take part in the Examination Board of the MEP MSc Programme Please attach the report of the visit to the off-campus location
