4 The University The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) is one of the largest universities in New South Wales a university with an international reputation for quality programs and flexible learning. UTS develops and regularly revises its programs of study in partnership with industry, government and professional bodies, so that its degrees are based on the latest professional standards and current practices. As a result, UTS produces graduates who are ready for work, and this is demonstrated in the high numbers of its students who are members of the workforce within a few months of finishing their degrees. Location The university is located within the creative industries inner city triangle, the location of 39 per cent of Australia s creative industries head offices and 70 per cent of its major international creative IT companies. The Kuring-gai campus is located in the beautiful Kuring-gai Chase National Park, only 30 minutes north-west of Sydney s Central Business District. It is home to undergraduate Education, Leisure, Sport and Tourism, and accelerated Nursing students. Student Profile With a total enrolment of approximately 30,500 students enrolled at UTS onshore and offshore, UTS is one of the largest universities in Australia. UTS places a strong emphasis on workplace experience, incorporating the latest industry practice and professional standards into its curriculum. UTS welcomes students from overseas. There are international students from over 70 countries in all faculties and on all campuses. UTS faculties run programs and teach courses overseas. 5 Highlights This is an advancement pathway for local Higher Diploma graduates to study parttime in Hong Kong for a Bachelor Degree in Engineering Science awarded by the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in Australia. Course Aims The UTS Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) aims to equip graduates with the skills and attributes needed for professional practice and professional leadership. The program is designed around the triple themes of academic development, personal development, and professional formation. Recognition of UTS Degree The BEngSc awarded by the University of Technology, Sydney through part-time studies in Hong Kong carries equivalent academic status and recognition to a Bachelor s Degree conferred by the University to home full-time and part-time students in Australia. The Awards Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc)* The Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) is a 3-year full-time equivalent program. Candidates may enrol in the BEngSc in Civil or Mechanical Engineering major or general (without major). Holders of a Higher Diploma in Engineering from Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) or local universities may be granted exemption from the time requirement of the 1st and 2nd years of the course. A 2 year part-time study program in Hong Kong will gain them the Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) Degree. Upon completion of the Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) graduates may take a further 15 months of part-time study to achieve a Master of Engineering Management (MEM). *The BEngSc Hong Kong course has registered with the Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau under the Non-local and Professional Education (Regulations) Ordinance. 6 Credit Recognition for Hong Kong Candidates Admission Requirements Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) The BEngSc is a 3-year full time equivalent program consisting of 144 credit points (24 subjects) of study. Holders of a Higher Diploma in Engineering from IVE or local universities may be admitted with credit recognition for 96 credit points (16 subjects) of study. This is equivalent to the time requirement of the 1st and 2nd years of the program. The remaining 48 credit points (8 subjects) may be taken over 4 teaching periods of part-time study in Hong Kong within 2 years. Students may exit here with a Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc). BEngSc graduates can choose to proceed to the Master of Engineering Management (MEM). For admission to the BEngSc, the basic entry requirement is an IVE or university engineering Higher Diploma or equivalent; Applicants must be proficient in the English language and meet the requirements of the University. Relevant work experience is normally required for entry to the course. Entry Requirements The Framework - holders of IVE or university engineering Higher Diploma or equivalent; and - proficient in the English Language and meet the requirements of the University - relevant work experience Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) Final Year Course - 8 subjects, 48 credit points - 4 teaching periods in 2 years part-time - 2 subjects per teaching period Graduate BEngSc Master of Engineering Management (MEM)* - 8 subjects, 48 credit points - 4 teaching periods in 15 months part-time * Holders of the BEngSc may proceed to a Master of Engineering Management (MEM) awarded by the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS). This degree may be awarded after 15 months parttime study in Hong Kong. Applicants should have two years of relevant work experience. The MEM has operated in Hong Kong in association with the Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) since 1998, in both English and Chinese. 4

7 Fields of Practice (Major) Mode of Delivery Fees and Charges The BEngSc degree covers various fields of practice (majors) in engineering. A major provides the essential foundations needed for practice in that field, familiarity with current practice, awareness of likely developments, and knowledge of resources available for future self-directed learning. Those majors are: - Civil Engineering - Mechanical Engineering - General (without major) Candidates must choose in the application form their field of practice (major) in accordance with their major field of study in the Higher Diploma. Please refer to page 6 of this brochure for the curriculum of each major. The program is offered in a mixture of parttime study modes with a strong component of face-to-face teaching, self directed learning and study group meetings. Face-to-face teaching Each subject takes about 14 weeks during which there will be 18 hours of lectures given by UTS academic staff together with 14 hours of tutorials conducted by local staff who are practicing engineers or academic staff drawn from local tertiary institutions. All face-to-face and examination sessions are held on weekday evenings and at weekends. Comprehensive course materials and study guides are provided. Discussions with, and feedback from, academic staff at UTS may also be conveyed via fax, or UTSOnline. Students are advised to have access on admission to the program. Remote Access to University Library UTS Hong Kong students can have remote access to University library resources and services from off-campus Internet connection. Mode of Assessment Course Fees The course fee per BEngSc subject is HK$8,400 For students entering with an IVE or university engineering higher diploma or equivalent, the course fee for the BEngSc : HK$67,200 (HK$8,400 x 8 subjects) The course fee for the BEngSc is payable in four equal installment i.e. HK$16,800 respectively on a teaching period basis. Charges A non-refundable application fee of HK$250 is payable by new applicants. A non-refundable student identification card charge of HK$80 is payable by new students on registration. Refund of Fees Full or partial refund of course fees (less the non-refundable application fee and student identification card charge) will be made in accordance with the policy of the University on refund of tuition fees paid by international students Assessment in the BEngSc includes a range of assignments. End of teaching period examinations are still important but these may be supplemented with regular assignments, practical work, projects and short tests. 5

8 Curriculum* Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) The BEngSc course comprises two components, namely core and Field of Practice subject. CORE SUBJECTS # Students must complete all 24 credit points (cp) of the following Core subjects: Interrogating Technology: Sustainability, Environment & Social Change Engineering Communication Design Fundamentals Engineering Economics & Finance General (without major) Engineering Analytical Modelling Managing Projects Engineering Enterprise Technology & Innovation Management The availability of subjects in the list for a given teaching period is subject to confirmation by UTS: Engineering, University of Technology, Sydney. The subjects to be offered may vary from time to time to meet the current needs and latest developments in engineering. FIELD OF PRACTICE SUBJECTS ## Students must undertake all 24 cp from the following field of practice subjects in the major they have chosen: Civil Engineering Engineering Analytical Modelling Structural Analysis Fluid Mechanics Environmental & Sanitation Engineering # Core Subjects This component provides a framework covering knowledge, skills, and attributes that are relevant to all engineers across all fields of practice. It consists of common mathematics and physics subjects, and common engineering subjects which draw on several fields of engineering practice to develop interdisciplinary knowledge and skills within the larger context of professional practice. It also develops awareness of the values debate in engineering, and promotes commitment to the principles of sustainability. Mechanical Engineering Engineering Analytical Modelling Fluid Mechanics Machine Dynamics Strength of Engineering Materials ## Field of Practice Subjects This component relates theoretical and practical learning from core subjects to applications in specific fields of engineering. It develops knowledge of engineering science and technologies relevant to particular branches of engineering, and specialist technical expertise. UTS KEY PROJECT PARTNER IN ONE OF THE WORLD S LARGEST WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS - The UTS team will apply their robotics expertise in interpreting data from sensors and building accurate maps of the surroundings to buried pipes. UTS RESEARCH TO HELP GROW SUSTAINABLE TIMBER BUILDING - UTS researchers are joining an international research consortium to develop large-span timber buildings for a wide range of uses in New Zealand, Australia and other export markets. FEIT DEAN NOMINATED FOR AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR - Professor Hung Nguyen has dedicated the last decade to giving severely disabled people greater independence and control with his revolutionary Aviator wheelchair. He has also created a diabetes monitoring machine, a stealth based system for early detection of breast cancer and a system for monitoring the prevention of driver fatigue. The Hong Kong Management Association The Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) is a non-profit-making incorporated body established in The Association, with a mission to train and develop human resources, has been actively taking part in training tens of thousands of management personnel and professionals, thereby raising the standard of management and improving its quality in Hong Kong. As part of HKMA s deep commitment to providing opportunities to local executives and professionals for continuing development, the Association, in partnership with universities and institutions in the UK, Australia and China, offers a series of programs leading to Bachelor s, Master s and Doctor s Degrees in various areas of studies. 10 Teaching Period Patterns and Intake How to Apply For students entering with an IVE or university engineering higher diploma or equivalent the BEngSc lasts for 2 years. It consists of 4 teaching periods, each teaching period lasting about 14 weeks. The Academic Year of the University is divided into two main teaching periods: Autumn (March - May) and Spring (August - October). There are two intakes annually, in March and August, for the BEngSc offered in Hong Kong. To apply for a place in the UTS Bachelor of Engineering Science, an application must be completed and lodged with The Hong Kong Management Association.
