2 Read the nonfiction story about holidays around the world; answer the questions. World Holidays By Cecilia Maeson People all over the world celebrate holidays that are full of traditions. Traditions are the special ways people do something. People celebrate holidays by eating food, playing games, singing songs, and telling stories. Many people celebrate Chinese New Year. They put good luck sayings in their homes and watch a colorful Lion Dance. People also give gifts to others. Christmas can be celebrated at different times, but many people celebrate it on December 25. Many people place a tree in their homes with colorful lights. People sing songs and give gifts to family and friends. They also share toys, clothes and food with others who need them. Other people celebrate Hanukkah which lasts eight nights. People light a candle in a holder called a menorah. They sing songs and get small gifts and money. People also play a game with a top called a dreidel. Other people celebrate Ramadan. It lasts one month. During Ramadan, many people eat only before the sun comes up and after it goes down. People give thanks for the things they have. Some people celebrate Kwanzaa. Each night for seven days people light candles in a holder called a kinara. People give gifts, eat together, and tell stories with family and friends. Holidays are often a special time for people. Many holidays are celebrated all over the world. People celebrate holidays in some ways that are different and some ways that are the same. Adapted from Reading A-Z by Mary Spratt. Vocabulary: Match the number of the boldface word with the correct meaning. 1. Ramadan A candleholder used during Kwanzaa 2. kinara The special ways people celebrate 3.
