2 Working at the Shire of Broome Human Resources Manager A bit about Broome The Shire of Broome is located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, on the Dampier Peninsular, 2200km north of Perth. The Shire covers an area of approximately 56,000 square km. In the early days, Broome established itself as a Pearling Town but in recent years has experienced substantial growth in the tourism sector, with the world famous Cable Beach being one of the many attractions. Fishing, agriculture, aquaculture, pastoral and off-shore exploration industries are also prominent in the Shire. Supporting a population of approximately 16,000 the town has ample shopping facilities including retail outlets, restaurants, cinemas, public and private schools to year 12, two universities and a sport and recreation centre. 4 Our Council We have a cooperative Council comprising of nine members representing two wards, Broome Ward with seven Councillors and Dampier Ward with two Councillors. Council meets every four weeks. The Shire of Broome comprises a workforce of approximately 140 full time employees and is responsible for providing and maintaining a variety of essential and important services and facilities to residents. The Shire of Broome's Administration Office is situated at 27 Weld Street, Broome. 7 A bit about the people who work here From our staff s perspective The three years I have worked at the Shire of Broome have been professionally challenging and rewarding, the working environment is excellent. The CEO, Directors and all officers are hardworking, professional and supportive of each other with extremely high morale. This coupled with the Broome lifestyle and perfect weather makes this the best local government organisation that I have worked for. Belinda Stayt, PA to the Chief Executive Officer (commenced January 2011) I am a local Kimberley woman born in Derby and grew up in the bush. I have worked for 8 years at the Shire of Broome commencing as a new graduate and Finance Officer. The Shire supported my additional studies as I completed my Master of Accounting and CPA (Certified Practicing Accountant) and worked my way up to my current position as the Manager Financial Services. The Shire covers a broad portfolio of functions servicing the Broome community and has a dynamic culture. It is a great organisation to gain experience and knowledge by being exposed to different departments from road construction to performing arts and emergency services. I love working for community organisations and working at the Shire makes me feel like I can make a positive influence on my community. My role has a huge responsibility to manage the conflicting priorities and demands of the community and balancing that with the need to provide for the future generations of Broome Theresa Bengtson, Manager Financial Services (commenced May 2006)
