Ratinale / Purpse fr Lessn The Red Crss recmmends having enugh supplies fr each member f yur family t last 72 hurs in an emergency situatin. Pwer utages ccur fr a number f reasns, but thse caused by severe strms may als prevent peple frm having access t stres (trees blcking rads, ice creates slick rads, etc.). It is imprtant t be prepared fr this type f situatin. Additinally, being prepared fr strms may ease any anxieties students may have abut strms. Resurces / Materials Required Paper and writing utensil t make list Optinal: Bag t put materials in when cmpleting activity in class r at hme Optinal: Materials (supplies) fr the bag Optinal: Virtually make a bag with clip art and smart bard interactive whitebard Anticipatry Set Talk with students abut hw majr strms (wind strm, thunderstrms, winter strm, etc.) can cause pwer utages and dwned pwer lines. Talk abut what the different warnings mean frm the news/weather statins (trnad watch vs. warning, severe thunderstrm, etc.) Discuss times when students have lst pwer and what actins they tk. Be sure t inquire abut resurces they used (candles, flashlights, etc.) and things they culdn t use (refrigeratr, micrwave, TV, etc.). Briefly talk abut hw it can take a lng time t turn pwer back n after a strm (tree remval, dwned wires, icy rads, etc.). Infrm them that 72 hurs is 3 days. Tell students abut the dangers f dwned pwer lines. Remember t stay at least 25 feet away frm dwn wires! Always call 911 r Cnsumers Energy ( ) immediately. Each family situatin is unique, but all families shuld be prepared. Clsure Review with students the types f strm warnings and watches. Have students discuss the safest places t be during a strm. Allw students t share their stries abut strms. Extensins Have students lcate the nearest shelter than prvides services during difficult times. Cnduct research t learn mre abut strms and hw t prepare. Different areas in the cuntry have t wrry abut different types f strms and ther emergencies, and therefre they prepare differently (ex: hurricanes, trnads, earth quakes). When a large strm r emergency causes destructin, peple need help rebuilding their cmmunities. Learn mre abut agencies wh help in these types f situatins (ex: Red Crss, Natinal Guard, etc.) Discuss special needs f elderly peple, babies, and animals. Are there medicines yu will need t have?
