1 Lesson Plan: KS1 Boating Safety - PSHCE National Curriculum Reference: KS 1 1b, 2a, 2c, 3g, 5d. Aim: To raise the children s awareness of boating safety including recognising possible dangers and making choices about useful equipment to take with them. Objectives: To encourage pupils to consider different choices and to learn about risks to them on a boat and how they can stay safe. Assessment/Success Criteria: Most children will be able to identify the necessary items required to take on a typical boat trip; others will be able to identify the differences between the boats on the activity sheet, sort the items into good and not so good choices to take on board, show awareness of possible dangers and make sensible suggestions about why some items are more useful than others. Some children will be able to make informed choices when looking at the different types of boat and give reasoned answers about why some boats would need different items to others. Teacher Notes: Laminate and cut out the boats on activity sheet 1 Resources: You will need access to the whiteboard activity, copies of Activity sheets 1, 2 and 3. Key Vocabulary: weather, lifejacket, first aid, cruise ship, power boat, sailing boat, trawler

2 Lesson Plan: KS1 Boating Safety - PSHCE Lesson Plan: Timing Section Activity 5 mins Introduction Ask the children if they have ever been out on a boat and record their experiences. Encourage other children to ask questions about what they wore and what they took with them. Explain that today you are all going to be thinking about travelling on a boat safely. Remind children that they should never go out in a boat without a responsible adult. 10 mins Group work Split the class into 6 groups and give each group a picture of a boat cut out from Activity sheet 1. Explain that there are many different types of boats and some may need different types of items than others. Ask them to work together to describe their boat in a few sentences e.g. What size is it? What is it made from? How many people do they think will fit on it? Can they guess what type of boat it is? Ask the children to keep their work together with their picture and leave it on the table till later. 15 mins Whiteboard Activity Open up the whiteboard activity and find out what the weather is like today. It is sunny but very cold today. Remind the children that it is not safe to go out in a boat if the weather is bad. Explain that the first thing you need to do is decide what to wear. Remind children of the weather conditions and discuss the best type of clothes for this weather. Click the next button. Discuss the items on the screen. Can children identify each item without scrolling over? Do they understand what a lifejacket is and why it is important? Ask different children to choose one item each, they can only choose 3 items. Click next. Explain that it is now time to pack your bag of useful things to take. Check that they understand what a useful item is. Look at the items together and check that they know what each one is and discuss which are useful and which are not. Ask 3 children to come up and choose an item. Click next. 20 mins Group Activity Explain that you now need to think about what to put into the boat. Talk about each item and discuss which are important and useful for the trip. Ask 3 children to come up and choose an item. Click next. Read the results together and see whether the children have made good choices or not. How well did they do? Sit the children back in their same groups again. Ask them to have another look at their boat. Look at the items on Activity sheet 2, which would they choose for their boat. Ask them to record their information on activity sheet 3. After 5 mins swap pictures of boats with another group and repeat. If time swap again and repeat activity for a 3rd boat. 10 mins Plenary Bring the class together and discuss the items they thought were useful for their boat. Were any items important for every boat? Ask each group to give reasons why they chose each item e.g children on the cruise ship may well want to take game console or teddy as it is such a big ship and they are more likely to feel more like they are at home on it rather than on a trawler- when a fishing rod would be a useful item. Do they have a favourite boat? Why did they choose it? Talk together about the messages we can take home to remind our parents and carers about how we can keep safe on a boat trip.
