1 Apple Devices and Library ebooks and eaudiobooks These screenshot by screenshot instructions are for Apple devices such as the ipad, ipod, and iphone. Similar instructions for other devices are available on s Guides for ebook devices. Library ebooks and eaudiobooks are available through the Ontario Library Service Download Centre, a consortium of Ontario Libraries who share access these titles. Usage is based on a library model, i.e. a limited number of copies of each title are available. If all copies of a title are borrowed, patrons have the option of placing that title on hold and will be ed when it is available for borrowing or have it checked out automatically to them by OverDrive. Titles are borrowed for 7 or 14 days depending upon your preference in Settings. Sections in these instructions: A. The OverDrive Library ebooks and Audiobooks app B. The OverDrive Library ebooks and Audiobooks app Apple products use the Overdrive Library ebooks and Audiobooks app to search for, download and read/listen to compatible ebooks and eaudiobooks. It is available through the App Store. In the App Store on your device, enter the search term: overdrive. Choose the version (ipad or iphone [iphone version also serves ipods]) that is compatible with your device. Use of the OverDrive app requires an OverDrive account. This account is not tied to your Oxford County Library card or PIN. It is a separate account between the user and OverDrive and permits the user to sync his/her reading between multiple devices and OverDrive s in browser reader called OverDrive Read. 1

2 When the Overdrive app opens, one of two screens will appear. OverDrive app never before installed on this device or device was deauthorized and app uninstalled then reinstalled or merely reopened. App previously was uninstalled, device was not deauthorized and app and now is being reinstalled. Sign up for an OverDrive Account. Sign in to an existing OverDrive Account. 2

3 Once opened, a one-time intro to the sections of the app appears. Click on Ok, I Got it once finished reviewing the intro. Swipe towards right to open the side menu. 3

4 Search for libraries offering OverDrive titles. To access a library s collection you must have a library card and PIN for that institution. Every library added will appear in the My Libraries section. Multiple different institutions can be added. Downloaded titles are accessed through the app s Bookshelf. The website also has a Bookshelf on which both downloaded and borrowed but not downloaded titles may be found Manage your OverDrive Account settings, Libraries, Subscriptions, and Devices. Set app settings for downloading, playback, and social settings as well as deauthorize device here. Setting Orientation Lock to ON will override device s orientation setting. Displays progress of download of ebooks (typically 1 file only) and eaudiobooks (typically multiple files). Shows previously borrowed titles. Help menu with a variety of basic how-to subjects. Displays version information for the app. 4

5 B. Signing in to Ontario Library Service Download Centre website via the app Click on Add a Library. Type in oxford county then click on Search. Select Oxford County Public Library. Click on star next to Ontario Library Service Download Centre. Oxford County Library is a part of a consortium of library systems in Ontario who have pooled their resources to bring a larger variety of titles to their users. 5

6 The gold star indicates the app will remember this choice for next time. Click on Ontario Library Service Download Centre. C. Your Account Click on Account or Sign In to sign in. This is Click on the drop down menu to scroll down sign in will be your Oxford County Library card to Oxford County Public Library. number and PIN. 7 Enter a valid Oxford County Library card number and PIN then Sign In. If Sign In was chosen, the Main page will appear. If Account, then it will be the OverDrive website s Bookshelf. This is the website s Bookshelf. All borrowed Titles on hold and titles set to automatically titles, already downloaded or not, are on here. renew may be found under Holds. Note: The app also has a Bookshelf which displays downloaded titles only. 7

8 Titles may be added to the Wishlist one of 2 ways. 1) Touch any cover to show more options. Touch the ribbon to add the title to the Wish List or, if already on the Wish List, remove it from the list. Not on Wish List On Wish List Wish List: Titles possibly to be borrowed at a later date. This is a user-generated list. 2) When looking at a title, the same ribbon appears under the Borrow button. The same actions may be taken as in Option 1. To add a rating, click on the stars next to a cover. Grey stars = no ratings yet Blue stars = other users ratings Gold stars = your own ratings Rated titles: the easiest method for users to see his/her own reading history at a glance. 8

9 Various settings can be customized by the user, including default lending periods for each format. The lending period still may be changed when borrowing a title. This will not change the default lending periods. Note: Titles may be returned early using the app s Bookshelf s Delete and Return options. D. Searching for and borrowing an ebook or eaudiobook title Whether searching for an ebook or eaudiobook, the method is the same. Searching may be done by: 1) Basic search for author, title, subject or keyword. Touch the box and it expands. Enter a title, author or subject then touch Search. Note: This symbol signifies that a copy of this title has been purchased for by the local institution for the use of its users only. This shortens the wait time for holds. 9

10 2) Advanced Search. Fill in as many or as few fields as you want then scroll down to click on Search button. With all three search methods, it is possible to narrow results to only those titles available for immediate borrowing. For Basic and Browsing, on the results page, touch Available Now. or, when using Advanced Search, touch the Available Now box prior to Search. 3) Browsing. 11 Example of searching and borrowing an ebook using Browse: Biography & Autobiography under ebook is chosen. Narrow search using filters at left and/or Show me only titles with copies available. Search narrowed to only those available. A title is chosen. The Lending Period may be changed if desired. Otherwise, click on Borrow button. 11

12 To download borrowed title, click on Download. Title downloads to app s Bookshelf screen. Borrowing an eaudiobook is accomplished in the same fashion. Note: eaudiobooks usually download in multiple parts so downloading entire eaudiobook may take several minutes. However, once first part is downloaded, title may begin to be played. eaudiobook has begun downloading. Parts are downloading. 12

13 E. Reading an ebook/listening to an eaudiobook In the app s Bookshelf, click on book cover to open ebook. Jump ahead in book by clicking on blue, underlined chapter headings in table of contents or use Menu as described below. 14 To listen to eaudiobooks, touch the cover in app Bookshelf and title opens. Placing a hold and borrowing the title when available There are two methods for placing holds. 1) Touch cover of title to be placed on hold 2) Touch the title under the cover to display more then touch Place hold. more information on the title then touch Place Hold. 14

15 OverDrive s default is to check out the title automatically to the user s account once title becomes available. This means the lending period begins from the moment OverDrive checks it out, not when user necessarily is prepared to begin reading/listening to the title. If a manual check is preferred, untick. Touch Place a Hold to place the hold. associated with user s account automatically is filled in (not shown above). Touch the to change if necessary. This may be changed later under Holds. When title is available, an will be sent to the specified address. To download to device, open app, go to the OverDrive Bookshelf, then download the newly checked out title. 15

16 Holds on titles have some options: Touch Options. Change address that is to receive notification of the title becoming available: Edit (not shown above) then Update. Dropdown menu displays options. Touch to access. Suspending a hold: If a user knows he/she will be unable to read/listen to a title when it becomes available (will be on holiday or has too many books to handle to at the moment, has not yet read the previous book in the series, etc.), it is possible to have OverDrive skip over the user s hold until after a user specified period is over. Once that period has passed, the user s hold will be reinserted into the holds queue. Touch the dropdown menu. Choose length of time to suspend the hold then touch Submit. 16

Note: Using this link will open OverDrive website in the browser, not the app. Notification of available holds also appears in the OverDrive bookshelf in the app. Available hold appears in Holds section of Account. Touch Borrow to check out the title of Cancel Hold if title no longer is needed. Holds that are available cannot be suspended. 17

18 G. Renewing a title. Titles may be renewed only once and only if no one else is on hold for it. Renewals may be made on the OverDrive website s Bookshelf. Any titles that are eligible for renewal will be marked as such. To renew, touch Renew. address associated with user account (not shown here) automatically will be filled in. Default is automatic renewal. Untick to receive notification and manually renew. Leave ticked and OverDrive automatically will renew the title. To change , untick, make changes then retick to have automatic renewal or leave unticked for manual. A renewal may be cancelled or the address to receive the notification for manual renewal may be changed prior to the renewal occurring. 18

20 H. Deleting and Returning then Deleting an ebook or eaudiobook Touch and hold cover picture of title to be deleted. Two options for deleting are offered: Delete and Return. Delete deletes the title from app only and title may be downloaded again to the same or different device. Return will delete the title from both the app and Ontario Library Service Download Centre. 20
