How To Use OverDrive using Apple ios Devices

1 Using OverDrive with Apple ipad, iphone, ipod Touch This document covers the Apple ipad, iphone, and ipod Touch, which support the following file formats of OverDrive e-books: Adobe EPUB (Note that the OverDrive Media Console app doesn't support Adobe PDF) MP3 audio books WMA audio books (if your Apple device synchs to a Windows-based computer) Install Software To download and manage e-books using OverDrive on an Apple ipad, iphone or ipod Touch, you need to download a free app called OverDrive Media Console from the Apple app store. 1. 2 3. Type in Overdrive, and select the line beginning with overdrive media console. 4. Tap the blue FREE button, then tap it again when the button changes to INSTALL. At this point you may be asked for your Apple ID password (this ID is typically created when you first set up your device). 5. The OverDrive Media Console app will now appear on your device s screen, and will proceed to download as long as you have an internet connection. 3 6. Once it is fully installed, tap on the OverDrive app icon on your device to open it. 7. Before downloading any books, you should first authorize your device with Adobe this is part of the protections that e-book publishers put in place to prevent unauthorized copying of their books. To authorize your computer with Adobe, they just need your address and a password that you create. 8. Tap on the Get Books+ button near the top right of the screen. 9. At the bottom of the next screen there will be a Settings button. Tap on that, and then tap on Authorize in the Adobe Authorization section. You may already have an Adobe ID if you authorized Adobe Digital Editions software on a desktop computer or laptop. If this is the case you should authorize all your devices with the same ID ( address and password). 10. Once your device is authorized, we need to set up your app to seek books from the Mississauga Library System's digital collection. Tap on the Get Books button at the bottom of the screen. 5 13. Tap on Mississauga Library System, or on any of the Mississauga Library branches listed. 14. Under the bar labelled Library Systems it will say elibrary Download Centre.. Tap on this. Need more help? or call x 3589 Page 5 of 12

You will now be taken to the Library s OverDrive page using your device s Safari browser you can use this page to browse for items, place e-holds, check out items, and download them wirelessly to your device. Borrow e-books 16. To see any items you may have already checked out on your account, you can tap on the heading My eaccount, and log in using your library card number and PIN. Tap on My eitems. 7 17. Otherwise, you can browse the collection for titles you are interested in. If the book is available for immediate check-out, there will be a link called Add to ecart. If all our copies of the book are already in use, you can place an ehold, and you will be notified by when the title becomes available for you. 18. Items that you place in your ecart will remain there for 30 minutes, which lets you do a bit more browsing, or you can immediately proceed to checkout. 8 19. To check an item out, you will be asked to log in using your library card, and enter a PIN, which is the last four digits of your telephone number. 9 20. Then you will be taken to a download page. Tap on the download link to begin. The OverDrive Media Console app will return to view, and you will see the book appear and begin to download. 21. Your device will remember your Adobe ID, and it will remember the library s web site, so many of these steps will not need to be repeated in future. You are now ready to read! 10 Returning e-books Early, or Deleting e-books From Your Device 1. E-Books (but not e-audio books) can be returned early (and all formats can be deleted from your device). Open the OverDrive app. The titles you have already downloaded will appear in a list on the screen. Tap on the edit button at the top of the main OverDrive screen. You will see a series of red icons appear beside each title in your list. 2. Tap on an icon beside any book you wish to delete. 11 3. Tap on delete, giving you the option to Return then Delete or just delete. Note: just deleting the item clears it from your device, but it will remain on your account until you return it early as described here, or your loan period expires. Another Method to Delete or Return Items Early 1. E-Books (but not e-audio books) can be returned early (and all formats can be deleted from your device). 12 2. You will see an arrow icon to the right of each book. Find the arrow corresponding to the book you wish to return early. Swipe across this arrow with your finger (make sure you don t tap on the arrow by mistake). 3. The swiping motion across the arrow changes the arrow into a red Delete button. Once this appears, tap on Delete. 4. Tap on Return then Delete. 5. You can also delete an individual item without returning it, by tapping on Delete only. 6. You are done!
