Phonics Workshop 3 Phase 5 and 6 Tuesday 3 rd March 2015

Phonics vocab. check Phoneme = purest element of sound Grapheme = a written representation of a sound (phoneme). High Frequency Word = Common words used in our language. Lists of top 100, 200 HFW some decodable, some not. Tricky word = Word that can not be decodable with phonics. Vowel = a, e, i, o, u = speech sound, pure sound, not blocked by air. Consonant = remaining 21 letters of the alphabet, air blocked when producing sounds. Blend = to combine single sounds to form longer sounds/words. Eg. c-a-t- = cat Segmenting = To break down a word or combination of sounds into the individual sounds that make it eg. cat = c-a-t. Digraph = a single sound represented by 2 letters eg. sh (vowel digraphs eg. ee) Trigraph = a single sound represented by 3 letters eg. igh Split digraph = 2 letters, split making 1 sound eg. a-e in make Syllable = any one of the parts in which a word is naturally divided when it is pronounced.

Letters and Sounds Phase 5 Usually taught in Year 1 Longest Phase = 30 week programme

What is Phase 5? Phase 5 Teaches new graphemes, and alternative pronunciations for these and old graphemes already taught. Greater fluency faster recognition of graphemes and blending of phonemes Spelling children will learn to choose the appropriate graphemes building word-specific knowledge of spellings.

Phase 5 New graphemes taught No need for mnemonics Fluency builds through reading. ay day oy boy wh when a-e make ou out ir girl ph photo e-e these ie tie ue blue ew new i-e like ea eat aw saw oe toe o-e home au Paul u-e rule

Phase 5 Alternative pronunciations for graphemes i fin find ow cow blow y yes by very o hot cold ie tie field ch chin school chef c cat cent ea eat bread ou out shoulder could you g got giant er farmer her u but put a hat what Some rules (eg y making ee sound usually at the end of a word), the rest children just need to know knowledge will build through reading opportunities.

Teaching strategies Revisit Teach Practice - Apply Sound buttons = dots or dashes under each grapheme to show the phonemes that they make. Phoneme frames Games Phoneme spotter stories Use of ICT Application into reading/writing Children need complete familiarity with graphemes of more than 2 letters to aid fluency.

At the end of Phase 5 children should be able to Write the common graphemes for any given sound Give the sound when most graphemes shown Read and spell phonically decodable 2 and 3 syllable words Read and spell first 100 HFW By end of Phase 5 children should be able to read hundreds of words by either: Reading words automatically if they are familiar. Decoding them quickly and silently. Decoding them aloud.

Letters and Sounds Phase 6 Usually taught in Year 2 Last phase of Letter & Sounds 24 Week Phase in LCP

What is Phase 6? Phase 6 Different format focuses on more complex elements of reading and spelling. Children become fluent readers and increasingly accurate spellers. Shift from learning to read to reading to learn takes place. Children able to read longer less familiar texts. Children learn some of the rarer GPCs

What is taught in Phase 6?. Past tense regular eg. I looked and irregular eg. I said Adding suffixes eg. ed, ing, ful. s Categorising words by spelling patterns Spelling longer words

Ways to help children operating at Phase 6 Encourage children to read aloud as well as in their heads Develop reading stamina by providing opportunities to read longer texts. Read to children regularly so they hear the stress on syllables in polysyllabic words Develop comprehension skills so they understand what they read in a deeper way inference and deduction. Teach strategies for learning spellings syllables, base words, analogy, mnemonics Provide opportunities for shared, guided and independent writing. Value marking and feedback Develop proofreading skills Teach use of dictionaries
