2 Who Is This For? This FUNction PE/REC Play Plans are collections of games that sort of go together that you can use for any PE or recreational center class. The idea here though, is to expand beyond the traditional camp or PE experience, and get the players involved in changing the games. The tweaks I give at the end are to give you examples of possibilities in case the players don t come up with any of their own. In other words, we know you re creative, but give them a chance to be creative. The games contained herein are best enjoyed with a pretty sizable space and at least 10 participants. Of course, these games can also be used with a bunch of people or outdoors. But we are concentrating here on using them for a family. Even though this is just for your family, use the planning sheet to take notes on what the players liked and didn t like. What did they learn? What could you try next time? How can you tweak the game? This is good for scrapbooks, too! Memories of each play day! What is needed? stability balls These can be ordered from or any number of exercise equipment sales websites. 2. Players. I think you can take care of that part, right? Wink, wink. 4. Space. These games require a large space such as a gym, or (preferably) a large field. Why only a few games in each Play Plan? I want to make The FUNction Method a conduit for creativity among the players, not just creativity among the adults that plan things. So, having just 2-3 games per Play Plan gives us that opportunity to let players riff. Encourage players and teens to come up with NEW ways to play the games. Remember to step out of the way, and not overcoach. Give tips and guidance, but let them have space to run with it. In Play, Kwame

4 Gym + Outdoors 6 - Up Intenspiration Multi Ball Soccer! Instructions The idea behind this game is to let more players get opportunities to touch the ball. This will help keep players more active during the game. Important: With players younger than 10, play with soft Gator or Nerf balls There are no goalies in this game. Separate the Players into two teams. Set up two goals, one on either end. Drop 3 balls in the middle, and say go. Each team will try to score as many goals as they can in the opposite goal. Whoever has more goals at the end wins! kicking, running, footwork Movement Principles Wanna get REALLY crazy? Use 4 balls or 5 balls! Each time a goal is scored, everyone shouts out goal! - but stay alert! If You See This... Sample Spherical Moments Certain Players are too timid to go get the ball and try to score a goal a FUNction Original Game Experience You Could Say This! Even though we have more than one ball, it s still about teamwork! Team work and passing is the best way to score more goals! Players are having trouble controlling the ball Players are having trouble shooting the ball where they want it to go The more you keep your feet moving all the time, and stay bouncy, the easier it will be to control the ball To control the ball, have you tried using the inside of your foot like this (demo)? It s going to take lots of practice, but you can work on planting your foot down beside the ball like this, and pointing your body where you want the ball to go (demo)

5 Gym + Outdoors 7 - Up Cooperation Focus! Instructions This game was inspired by Exuberant Animal s Attention Deficit game. Where that game uses medicine balls, we are going to use Gator balls or something similar. Get everyone in a circle, and begin by having everyone play catch with one ball. You, standing just outside of the circle with a bag of balls, will throw a second ball in once they develop a rapport with the first. Then a third, and a fourth, and a fifth, until it is utter chaos! Movement Principles catching, squatting, lunging, rotation You can add game tweaks such as having everyone stand on one leg, everyone with one hand behind the back, and more! Share your favorite games tweaks with Our FUNction Community! If a ball is missed, the player who missed it has to run and get it. Sample Spherical Moments If You See This... You Could Say This! Players keep throwing the ball too hard Remember, we want to keep as many balls going as possible. Let s throw underhanded. Players are missing the ball (this will happen more as a greater number of balls are introduced, so address this only as needed) Watch where my eyes are looking when I catch the ball This game is ALL about paying attention. Be constantly looking all around you for a ball. Chances are, one is coming your way! Always look for the ball inspired by and adapted from

6 Gym + Outdoors 5 - Up Cooperation Clay Pigeons Instructions Gather a few large exercise balls (stability balls). These are our clay pigeons. Get a bag of Gator Balls or tennis balls. These are your ammo. Separate into two groups - Launchers and Throwers (communicate to the players that everyone will get a chance to do both) The Launchers split their group in half, one group on each side of a defined space. They will roll or bounce the stability balls back and forth. The Throwers will stand behind the line (as illustrated). As the exercise balls fly back and Movement Principles forth between the two groups of Launchers, the Throwers try to hit them! throwing, catching, rotating, squatting Once all the balls are thrown, call out Gather. When this word is called out, everyone stops, runs and gathers all items to do it again! Sample Spherical Moments If You See This... Players keep missing You Could Say This! Could you try to point at your target with one hand, and throw with the other? Think about where your target is going, and try to meet it there Players are bending at the waist only to gather the balls Launchers are getting too crazy with the exercise balls Do you want to try standing closer to get the hand of it, then stepping back more and more? Practice dropping your bottom a littlle and use monster walking to gather the ammo! Remember, you don t want to make it impossible, just difficult! a FUNction Original Game Experience

7 Historical Riffs and Tweaks Here are some ways in which groups of players and families have changed these games before. In developing (or already having) a relationship with these particular players or teens, you will know which ones are appropriate or inappropriate. Multi Ball Soccer Tweaks 1. Start with one ball, and throw out a new ball every few minutes. 2. Create a rule that stipulates a certain number of passes before any shot on goal 3. Try using different types of balls all at once. Focus Tweaks 1. Try it hitting the balls up into the air instead of catching them. 2. Try catching in different positions - in a squat, in a lunge, seated. 3. Ask the players in your class or group how they might change the game! Clay Pigeon Tweaks 1. Try having one group throw all the stability balls up at once, and have the other group try to hit as many as possible. 2. Experiment with bouncing the target balls, or rolling them.
