It Gets Better President Obama and Vice President Biden are encouraging LGBT youth who are being bullied or harassed because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. Civil Rights and It Gets Better feature=player_embedded&v=gey AFbSDPVk Video Clip

A New Wave of Bullying through Social Media Due to rapid advancements in technology, bullying has taken on a new form: The Use of cyberspace for harassment With applications such as: Facebook Twitter MySpace YouTube Smart phones/mobile phones Texting Blogging Bullying can be done with the press of a button The Perpetrator does not see the suffering of the victim

Pew Research Center November, 2011 Report Teens, Kindness and Cruelty on Social Network Sites

Pew Research Center November, 2011 Report Teens, Kindness and Cruelty on Social Network Sites Ended your friendship with someone (social networking site activity) Twitter users more likely to report ending a friendship (34% vs. 20% of non-users) 26% of daily users, 20% of weekly users and 8% of those who use the sites less often Made you feel nervous about going to school the next day (social networking site activity) 20% of younger teens reported this, compared with 11% of older teens Nervousness is most often felt by younger girls; 27% of younger girls said they had felt this way. Twitter users are more likely (24% vs. 10%) than non-users to say this

Bullying Defined Bullying has no precise definition yet the National Centre Against Bullying uses the following: Bullying is when someone (or a group of people) with more power than you, repeatedly and intentionally uses negative words and/or actions against you, which causes you distress and risks your wellbeing. (retrieved on November 8, Bullying can be physical, verbal, social or psychological Cyberbullying is bullying that involves the use of electronic means like the Internet and mobile phones. It allows bullies to do their work at a distance, using environments outside of the school context. Its anonymity and enormous scope make its effects more severe, in terms of the damage the victims endure.

Statistics In 2007, nearly one out of three students in middle school and high school reported that they had been bullied at school during the school year. (Willard, 2011) In 2007, more than 900,000 secondary students reported being cyber-bullied, noted Secretary Arne Duncan at the Bullying Prevention Summit in August 2011.

School Environment ADDRESSING CYBERBULLYING

School Environment As stated by Secretary Duncan, When children feel threatened, they cannot learn. Victims of bullying often avoid school which can lead to lower academic performance (Willard, 2011) Bullying damages the school climate Both bullies and victims are at high risk of suffering from serious health, safety, and educational risks (Willard, 2011)

School Jurisdiction Currently, about 47 states have laws specifically addressing bullying in schools. New Jersey law states: Bullying, like other disruptive or violent behaviors disrupts both a student s ability to learn and a school s ability to educate its students in a safe environment. School officials have the authority to respond to off campus student speech if that speech has caused, or reasonably could cause, a substantial disruption at school or interference with the rights of students to be secure and receive an education. (Willard, 2011) This disruption or interference could include: violent physical or verbal altercations between students significant interference with the right of a student to receive an education and feel safe at school significant interference with instruction or school operations.

Implications for School Counselors THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE 21 ST CENTURY SCHOOL COUNSELOR ASCA MODEL THE QUESTION HAS OFTEN BEEN POSED, WHAT DO SCHOOL COUNSELORS DO? THE MORE IMPORTANT QUESTION IS, HOW ARE STUDENTS DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF WHAT SCHOOL COUNSELORS DO? (ASCA)

ASCA National Model Foundation Delivery System Management System Accountability From: American School Counseling Association Executive Summary

The School Counselor: School Policy Chibarro s (2007) framework: Schools need to develop clear policies, for both in and out of school, with regard to cyberbullies (Dyrli, 2005). American Psychological Association (APA) Zero Tolerance Task Force Report (APA, 2008) School sanction for violating the policy to be spelled out. Policies in place so students can report cyberbullying anonymously (Aftab, n.d.).

The School Counselor: Prevention and Intervention Efforts School counselors to address awareness for school personnel, parents, and youth. School counselors, where qualified, can provide training to school personnel (Chibarro, 2007). Supervision in areas where cyberbullying may occur (i.e., school media center, Chibarro, 2007). Working with youth to make good decisions. Working with youth to create community, foster empathy.
