3 Who is Recycling Council of Ontario (RCO)? Not for profit, non-government, membership-based environmental organization whose mandate is to inform and educate society about the generation of waste, the avoidance of waste, the more efficient use of resources and the benefits and or consequences of these activities Members represent a variety of stakeholders including municipalities (lrg & sm), manufacturers, brand owners, material processors, industry associations, small/medium size businesses, other NGOs, academics, consultants, other sister provincial organizations
4 RCO s History & Milestones Celebrating 30 years! (incorporated in 1978) Instrumental in developing Ontario s Blue Box Program (26 years old 98% of Ontario s residents) United Nations Environmental Award (1989) Funding comes from government grants, events, membership, research funding, corporate partners, charitable donations
5 RCO s Work Build awareness of the issues of over consumption, waste generation and the importance resource conservation Provide information about the consequences of waste (environmental and economical). Examine and bring forward best practices on waste reduction and diversion Conduct waste audits and develop waste reduction action plans Conduct research to qualify the rationale for waste diversion programs and policies. Bring this information to policy makers. Support the development of effective and informative waste reduction policies and programs. Form partnerships with members and other stakeholders to facilitate discussion and debate of the issues. Lead and support the implementation of programs and application of policies that result in waste avoidance and reduction, and/or enhance reuse and recycling activities. Support and test the development of programs to reduce wastes (Stewardship)

9 Zero Waste Community Event Toolkit Project Terms of Reference : Project Rationale Wastes from the IC&I (includes public events) makeup about 60% of Ontario s disposal stream Public expectation and readiness that event wastes be addressed. (very visible ) Event wastes typically falls outside the responsibility of Municipal service provision. Lack of support to address the problem. Very little resources and information available to event manager/organizers
10 Project Objective Develop a practical resource tool, focused for event organizers and host municipalities, designed to help guide and support efforts to eliminate wastes from Ontario s community events.
