What is this course about? 1.1 Course description Molecular Ecology uses molecular techniques to address ecological questions and is a rapidly growing field in which USC is active in research. The revolution in tools to undertake genetic studies has opened up new possibilities in ecological research. You will be introduced to a range of molecular tools and their applications to ecological questions. You will be guided through data analysis and interpretation with real life examples from USC researchers. You will develop skills in analysis and interpretation of data using a variety of statistical and analytical approaches and software. 1.2 Course content Exploring the use of molecular tools in the context of topics including; restoration and conservation genetics, behavioral genetics, phylogeography, microbial ecology and conservation. Covering topics such as Population genetics; Ecogenomics, DNA barcoding; Systematics; Mating and reproductive strategies; Microbial ecology, environmental Genomics 2. Unit value 12 units 3. 3 Assessment Task 1: Tutorial Questions Page 3 Goal: The tutorial question series allows you to review and apply practical aspects of molecular ecology Product: Answers to questions and activities that compose the class tutorial activities Format: You will complete tutorial data analysis exercises and answer tutorial questions. To be submitted one week after tutorial completion. Each tutorial submission is of equal weighting and combined will result in 20% of the total marks. The specific tutorials to be submitted will be identified on Blackboard and tutorial notes will be available on Blackboard Criteria Ability to perform required data manipulations and demonstrate ability to interpret data correctly and answer required questions. Understand key concepts and theories pertinent to Molecular Ecology and apply them to specific scenarios Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Applying technologies Developing Assessment Task 2: Assignment Goal: To develop scientific research, writing and presentation skills and gain an in-depth understanding of the state of the scientific literature on a chosen topic. Product: You will undertake a critical literature review of a topic in Molecular Ecology Format: The assignment allows you to discover information about a topic of interest and to use the published literature to seek answers to questions. A set of topics will be provided across a range of fields within Molecular Ecology. These will be in the format of questions. You will select one of these as the focus for your critical review of the literature aimed at answering the question based on published literature. Criteria You will be assessed based on your demonstration of familiarity with the literature on the topic including the relevant theories and evidence to support the theories. Critical review of the topic. Ability to synthesise information from diverse fields and communicate the outcomes. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Information literacy Communication Assessment Task 3: Exam Goal: The final exam will require you to demonstrate and apply the key concepts, theories and practices in Molecular ecology Product: End of Semester Exam Format: This examination will be based on material covered in lectures and tutorials for the course and will be held in the central examination period. The exam will contain short answer questions data analysis and interpretation and an essay question Criteria Demonstration of understanding of material covered in lectures and tutorials and ability to apply molecular tools in an ecological context Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Information literacy

4 Page Additional assessment requirements Blackboard As a student enrolled in this course you will have access to course information on the Blackboard site. You are strongly recommended to log onto the course site on a regular basis. All course announcements, course changes, posting of course materials and grades (via My Interim Results) will be accessed through Blackboard. It is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate internet access (either off campus or oncampus) in order to access Blackboard regularly and to complete required assessment tasks. Safe Assign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via Safe Assign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that Safe Assign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via Safe Assign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission will result in reduction in marks in line with USC assessment policy and procedures when not accompanied by appropriate documentation. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6. 5 Page 5 3 Landscape genetics This week we apply population genetic principals as they apply on a landscape level. Tutorials introduce you to methods of data analysis including use of computer programs and interpretation 4 Genetics of mating and inbreeding 5 Conservation and restoration Genetics 6 Molecular approaches to behavioural ecology We learn how to calculate mating and inbreeding using genetic markers We learn how to apply genetic theory to practical conservation and restoration scenarios We investigate how molecular approaches can used to gain insights into an organisms behaviour using practical examples during tutorials 7 Phylogenetics We learn how molecular tools have revolutionised systematics and phylogenetics and have practical examples to gain experience working with this kind of data 8 DNA Barcoding You will learn about the methods and applications of DNA barcoding and gain experience manipulating real data 9 Microbial molecular Ecology You will learn about specific applications of Molecular approaches to microbial ecology 10 Genomics and ecology You will explore the new field of genomics and its applications to ecology for submission and review of in lecture and tutorial notes. You should have commenced collecting reference materials for your assignment for submission,review of in lecture and tutorial notes and continue working on assignment notes for submission,review of in lecture and tutorial notes you should have now fully framed the focus for your assignment based on your reading to date for submission, review of in lecture and tutorial notes. You should now be well into the writing of your assignment for submission, review of in lecture and tutorial notes notes. Submission of assignment notes
