Artists and map publishrs us color, but it hlps to undrstand how light and th color ffct an objct, how w s color, and how w prciv color imags. This involvs thr main aras that ffct our color vision.: (1),Th PHYSICAL, whn light illuminats an objct and is sn by th y, (2). Th PHYCHOPHYSICAL, how th y snss light and th objct and thn transmits th information to th brain. and, (3), Th PSYCHOLOGICAL, what th brain prcivs as th visual xprinc and th raction toth light and color of th objct. PHYSICAL PHYCHOPHYSICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL All thr aras ffct color vision. As th color tmpratur and charactristics of a natural or synthtic light sourc changs, on will s th color of th objct chang. Th particular and somtims uniqu physical mak up of ach individual s y and brain also ffcts how that prson ss color. Color vision is basically a prcption and is uniqu for ach individual. Color vision is also ffctd by ag, th angl of vision, and th chmical makup of th pigmnts or dys in th viwd objct. It is somtims surprising whn th phnomnon of mtamrism occurs. That happns whn th chmical makup of two sampls hav a diffrnt chmical mak-up but appar as a color match undr a particular light sourc. Problms rgarding th viwing of color printd matrial hav bn minimizd by following th standards stablishd by intrnational and national associations such as th CI, AIC, GATF, and th National Burau of Standards, tc. Howvr, problms still xist bcaus, in rality, fw actual viwing conditions conform to ths standards. A prson looking at a map anywhr in th world will xprinc various conditions, as with th illumination, th angl of vision, various pigmnts and dys, and th many variabls rgarding th obsrvrs. Snsitivity to ths problms provid a hlpful platform for th publishing of maps in color. Considring psychology, it is gnrally accptd that. It s th color that maks you lik it. Thy wr includd in th 1981 Spring dition of th Larnd Socity Journal, COLOR RSARCH AND APPLICATION, (publishd by John Wily & Sons). That dition was dvotd to Th Optical Socity of Amrica s Uniform Color Scals. Th OSA original color chips wr first producd in arly 1977 and wr basd on spcifications dvlopd by its Committ on Uniform Color Scals. For th production of th four slics, ach individual sampl was masurd and matchd by th authors to produc suprior color fidlity. Som thr thousand sts wr producd and wr insrtd as th cntrfold of that dition. On of th four slics, J+G=O, is illustratd blow. Jo On slic of Th Optical Socity of Amrica s Uniform Color Spac. Anothr xampl of th author s involvmnt in th scinc of color is rproducd in, MASURING COLOUR, a book on th subjct by R.W.G. Hunt with a slic of CILAB color spac at th L*50 lvl. Th original was producd with only masurmnt data availabl for ach sampl. Th colors had not bn actually sn until th chart was producd.
