The most familiar of these are the Aeginetan and Athenian, and later the Rhodian, all of which appear in a wide variety of sources, and in particular in the weights and measures assigned to votive offerings of precious metals, including coinage, in temple-inventories, notably those of Athens and Delos, and in the long temple-accounts for the work carried out at Delphi in the middle of the fourth century. The coherence of what at first sight appears to be a self-contained region was in fact the outcome of a late medieval contraction and concentration of political power. This chapter argues that an analogous, and indeed simultaneous, contraction can also be observed in the pattern of regional monetary cooperation. In the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, that cooperation had been vested in regional coinage associations. Such associations sprang up across the length and breadth of Germany. Although their importance as agents of regional monetary policy needs no stressing, their significance in the longer term at least on the Upper Rhine lay in providing a framework for cooperation over fundamental issues of good police and public welfare. This chapter looks at one coinage association, the Rappen coinage league, focusing on its rise and collapse. Evidence from Vesuvian cities is compared with evidence from other sites. It is shown that in Graeco-Roman antiquity, coins were by far the common means of payment, but in the cities where there were bankers, bank accounts had a role to play. Coinage was not the only way to keep valuables. The evidence from the Vesuvian cities shows that we must recognize the importance of jewellery and precious metals, of gold and silver jewels, and of silver plate. Page 2 of 5

These few years, in which the monstrance of Belém of 1506 (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon) was produced with the gold of Kilwa, also saw an interesting development in Portuguese gold coinage. The findings reveal the use of Chinese and Chinese-style coins in the region; the use of Kushan, Byzantine, and Sasanian coins in particular locations at particular times; and the desire to create new local styles of coinage.
