5 National Update Over the last few years there has been a number of changes to the British education system. Linear exams Controlled assessments First Entry no retakes School leaving age - 18 English Baccalaureate - Ebacc Retake of English and Maths - post 16 Curriculum and examination reforms from 2015 New GCSE grading system 1-9
6 National Update Examination Reform All GCSE courses have been rewritten with new schemes of assessment. Y10 will be the first cohort who will study the new GCSE courses in English Language, English Literature and Mathematics The new GCSE specifications are much more demanding and the content for Maths and English has increased significantly.
7 National Update - Changes to GCSE Grading Grading for GCSE English and Maths has changed. A* to C will no longer be how achievement is measured. A new 1-9 grade scale will be created with 9 representing the top grade. Current grade C will be the new grade 4 initially. Grade 5 will be about half to two thirds higher than that required for a C. (this is likely to become the new sought after level). There will be greater stretch above grade 4 with 5 further grades available. Grade 7 will match grade A. Grade 9 will be for exceptional performance About half those who currently get grade A* will get grade 9.

This model points at 4 levels of progress across KS2-KS4. Targets are achievable but challenging. Targets are not guarantees!

12 Linear GCSEs All exams are sat in May/June Only Maths, Science, Geography and MFL still have higher and foundation tiers of entry. Each GCSE grade carries a point score value A*=58, A=52, B=46, C=40, D=34. These may be used by colleges and universities when applying for courses. B or 6 and above grades required for A' level courses. Every subject counts!
13 Controlled Assessments Controlled assessments take place throughout Y10 and Y11. These vary depending on the subject from 12% up to 60% of the final GCSE exam grade. Attendance is vital in regard to preparation and completion. English, Maths and BE have no controlled assessments. Parents will be notified in advance of controlled assessment dates/deadlines.

15 English 2015 All students are entered for GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature. There are no controlled assessments in English. English Language: two examinations, 50% + 50% English Literature: two examinations, 40% + 60% There are no tiers of entry, so all students will sit the same English examination papers. Examination question practice will take place in class during every half-term of Y10 and Y11. Support material will be available on the CLZ and on the AQA website.
16 Maths GCSE Linear examination Edexcel. Three papers -1 hour 30 minutes. Each contributes 33.3% of the final grade. Paper 1 is non-calculator Papers 2 and 3 are with a calculator The Foundation Tier grades are 1-5 The Higher Tier grades are 4-9. Support material will be available on the CLZ. Class teachers will decide on tier of entry as the course progresses.
17 Science Decisions regarding the final group for Triple Science will be made at Christmas Students will be expected to be consistently achieving A or high B grades Controlled Assessments for all students will be in the weeks beginning the 11 th and 18 th January and 1 st and 8 th February. To follow any Science at A level, students will need at least 2 B grades in Science GCSE (higher grades are preferred).

24 Support and guidance Form Tutor has central role and is your first point of contact. Mentoring SMART targets are set based on academic mentoring. Support with non-academic issues. Tutor time programme supports literacy, numeracy, and the development of wider skills (SMSC).

29 Top Tips - For Students Attendance - 95% of success is showing up. Personal organisation equipment, books, punctuality KNOW your courses and exam boards. Use of planners homework and key dates. Do homework on the day it is set. Keep on top of controlled assessment dates and prepare thoroughly. Plan your revision for tests and exams. Seek advice if you need it. Use technology to its full advantage GCSEpod, apps, CLZ, SMHW etc.
30 Top Tips - For Parents Highlight key dates on the calendar Be aware of your child s timetable display it centrally Be alert to text messages and letters from school Encourage good study habits deter (excessive) XBox, Facebook? An extra hour of television, internet or computer game time in Year 10 is linked with poorer grades at GCSE, Cambridge University research suggests. Show an interest in homework and the different subjects Buy revision guides if possible Consider a reward structure Visit exam websites Communication keep in contact with staff. , phone, meeting.
31 Top Tips - From Staff to students We are not the enemy! Student and staff relationships are key in achieving success. Our job is to support you in achieving the best set of results you possibly can, not to fight you. We do not enjoy nagging. Do the right things, no matter how small. DO NOT BECOME COMPLACENT (Homework, uniform, punctuality) Turn up, work hard, get better. I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. What I can t accept is not trying.
32 Top Tips Develop a Growth Mindset Believe in yourself. Have a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset. Fixed Mindset: You either are or aren t good at something, based on your inherent nature, because it s just who you are. Lower achievers- I can't do it because I'm stupid. Talent alone creates success, without effort. Higher achievers I don t need to work hard. Growth Mindset: Anyone can be better at anything, because your abilities are entirely due to your actions. EFFORT is paramount in DEVELOPING success. We as teachers believe that you are capable of making progress. Focus on the positives. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will
33 How to succeed in KS4 Hard work Determination Resilience Be part of the team. Don t take the easy path, take the path that leads to awesome. We are on the same team, start acting like it. We ve got work to do.
