11 CHOOSING A SPECIES The main factor in choosing a wood species to incorporate into your design is simply color. All of our woods are hard enough to be used as functional pieces. Specifiers are thus free to choose the species by the color and grain structure that works best with the overall design of the project. HARDNESS The list below shows the Janka number for each species in kilograms-force (kgf). The Janka method for testing hardness measures the force required to embed a steel ball halfway into the wood surface. The forced used for this purpose is called the Janka hardness.
