General Instructions and Tips All images should be printed onto the transfer paper in mirror image either using the appropriate driver with application software such as Corel Draw, Illustrator or PhotoShop. The printed transfer paper is taped to the job using heatproof tape. When taping the job down try to ensure that the heatproof tape does not encroach over the print area as this could cause a lighter patch where the tape is on the image. In a flat press the job should be placed on the Teflon mat with the transfer paper facing up towards the heated press platen. The job is then pressed at the recommended temperature, time and pressure. The press should be opened gently so as not to cause a vacuum and lift the paper causing ghosting and streaking. The following is a guide and times and temperatures may vary depending on your press and inks and size of substrate. For tips on getting the best results and trying different variations please refer to Tips and Techniques below. Tips and Techniques Transfer Paper: We recommend Accuplot Sublimation paper. If you look closely, you will notice that one side of the paper is brighter than the other. Print your transfer on the brighter white side. Store the transfer paper in its original black packaging. If the transfer paper is exposed to light for an extended period of time it can fade and damage the paper, affecting the quality of the transfer. Printing the Transfer: No matter which Epson printer you use, it is always best to do a nozzle check each time you turn the printer on. Use a piece of normal copying paper (not sublimation paper). Place it in your printer and using the PowerDriver program perform a nozzle check. If you experience a bad nozzle check then you may need to proceed with a clean (select Nozzle Clean on your PowerDriver program). Print the nozzle check again. If you are still experiencing a bad nozzle check then repeat the process until you achieve good results. If a colour is missing after several cleans and nozzle checks, you may need to replace the cartridge. Protecting Your Press: To make the alignment of the substrate to a full-bleed transfer easier, it is recommended that you make the transfer slightly larger than the substrate. For example, if you are pressing a 76 x 25mm name plate, make your transfer 78 x 27mm. This will create a border to which you can align your substrate. While this makes the alignment easier and allows for full colour coverage, it also poses a problem. When pressed, the ink that does not touch the substrate will still heat up, and must go somewhere. If you don t use some type of protection, it will go directly into the pad of your press. Everytime you press, thereafter, the ink will heat up and transfer onto whatever is above it. To avoid this we recommend you use a Teflon heat mat. Teflon Mats: It is recommended that a Teflon mat be used under the job, on the base of the press. This protects the rubber mat on the press and makes it a lot easier to clean up any residue from ink or adhesives. This is especially important when sublimating double sided FR plastic. Double-sided Substrates: It is essential that you use a Teflon mat. Sublimate one side as normal. Let it cool. To do the other side, line up the substrate with the transfer. Cut a strip of paper and tape to either side of the transfer making sure you do not tape the substrate. Do not tape over the transfer image otherwise you may experience fading where the tape is placed

Moisture: Moisture in the paper will usually cause a milky colour in the solid colour areas and blurring. Absorbent backing paper is recommended when sublimating some products to reduce the problems associated with moisture. This can be light cloth or non-ribbed paper towel. It absorbs moisture that might be in the paper. This is placed on top of the job after it is placed on the press. Another suggestion is to place the transfer on the warmed base of the press for 20 seconds to remove any excess moisture. Note you should always wait for the ink to dry properly before transferring to the substrate. Larger areas: For large areas such as an A4 size Ultracoat metal plaque or Unisub wood clipboard you must ensure that the transfer paper is secured tightly with tape. While with most jobs it is advisable to get the transfer paper off the job fairly quickly but we have found that with the two items mentioned above, that letting it cool for about 20 seconds prior to removing the paper helps greatly. While this could change colours very slightly it ensures the sublimation dyes are not still in a gaseous state while the paper is being removed thus preventing flaring of solid colours. With wetsuit-rubber type products it is essential to get the paper transfer off as quickly as possible. As rubber expands with heat, when the press is raised the expansion can cause ghosting of images and text. Times and Temperature variations: A temperature of C is recommended for most products. Generally use moderate to heavy pressure - it should require some effort to close your heat press. Time and temperature may vary depending on your heat press and the thickness of the blank material. Dwell times can be increased or reduced in 5-15 second increments until you find the duration that results in the clearest image. Temperature variations should be made in 5 to 10 degree increments. It is most unlikely that the temperature would need to be increase above 200 O C. All times shown for face-up sublimation transfer on top of the substrate. When testing different times and temperatures open the press and lift a corner of the transfer ensuring that you do not move the transfer, if the results are not what is expected the press can be closed again for the desired time. Colour Information: Most sublimation takes place at around 200 O C. One of the issues with sublimation is the different coloured inks start and stop sublimating at different temperatures. We have seen customers, well experienced in dye-sublimation of fabric, being able to adjust precise colours by varying the pressing heat and time. These instructions are a guide for the standard Sawgrass SubliJet inks. For the Power Life or Sawgrass XL range of inks see extended transfer times above. Storing finished products: Special care must be taken when storing or packaging finished sublimated products. If sublimated pieces are placed in direct contact with other sublimatable materials or with any type of synthetic material, the inks will migrate from the sublimated piece to the synthetic material over time. Do not stack finished pieces face-to-face, either when hot or cold. Do not wrap finished pieces in shrink wrap or place them in plastic bags for shipping. We recommend that you use a paper sheet between stacked items, or wrap pieces in paper for shipping. Outdoor Durability: While many of these sublimatable products feature UV absorbers to extend outdoor life, they are not generally intended for permanent outdoor use. Fading will occur over time depending on the brand of sublimation ink used and outdoor environment. Laboratory research has shown that using a longer dwell time can extend out door life. This allows the sublimation inks to penetrate the sublimatable coating to the maximum extent possible. However, some fine image detail may be lost as a result of the longer dwell time. UV durability is increasing as ink and substrate development continues. Contact us for the latest information

UltraCoat Metal Metal Metal (Colour) 200 C seconds Low/Medium** ** We have found that on the white and mirror metal, the pressure should be kept to an absolute minimum to stop any paper background residue appearing on the job. Use absorbent backing behind. Ensure that the protective plastic coating is removed prior to taping down the job. Another technique to eliminate any background paper residue on white or mirror UltraCoat is to set the press to around C, place the job face down on the press (opposite to normal) and press for 70 seconds with a light pressure. For adhesive backed metal use the Teflon mat to protect the bottom of the press. FR Plastic Bag Tags, Name Badges, etc. FR Plastic FR Plastic 200 C seconds Medium/High Ensure that the protective plastic coating is removed from the FR plastic. When printing double sided it is essential to use a Teflon mat to prevent over print. Ensure that there is no ink residue on the Teflon mat prior to printing on either side of the FR plastic. Clean before each pressing. Unisub wood- Hardboard Unisub Wood Unisub Products 200 C seconds Medium/High The thicker the material the longer the time. UniSub suggest 35 to 45 seconds at the same temperature and pressure. We have found that 50 to 60 seconds is preferred. Ensure that the protective plastic coating is removed from the Unisub Wood. For larger sizes tape the paper very well and allow to cool for at least 20 seconds before removing the transfer paper. Spectra Bright Tansfers Spectra Bright Unisub Products 200 C seconds Medium/High The times may vary depending on various types of substrate (cotton, poly-cotton blends or canvas) Apply the transfer to the fabric as normal. Press at medium to high pressure for about 15 seconds Remove the transfer while hot (very important, for best results). MagMates MagMates UniSub Products 200 C seconds Medium/High Some people get the best results by using a Teflon sheet or a sacrificial piece of copy paper on top of the transfer. It is well advised to use the Teflon mat on the base of the press. This helps keep the back smooth and makes it easier to handle when hot

SubliMates Adhesive plastic film SubliMates UniSub Products 200 C seconds Low/Medium It is well advised to use the Teflon mat on the base of the press to prevent any adhesive sticking to the mat. Some people get the best results by using a second Teflon sheet or a sacrificial piece of copy paper on top of the transfer. Sublimates can be cut to shape with scissors or a sharp knife. When cutting SubliMates in a vinyl cutter use a 30 to 60 blade and grams of downforce. Start at a relatively slow speed and increase until you find the optimal speed for your machine. SubliMates can be laser cut on a 25-watt laser starting at 100% power, 40% speed, 500 DPI and 750 PPI. Beer Steins Beer Steins Ceramic 400 F 270 seconds Medium/High With the popular Mug Pro place the stein in the press upside down. When ready, the stein is removed from the press, the transfer paper removed and the stein is placed into a bucket of water to prevent blurring. Please Note these times are for the Mug Pro heat press only. Important Note The new digital MugPro temperature should be set to about 215 O C Travel Mug (Stainless Steel) Stainless Steel Ceramic 400 F 120 seconds Heavy Coffee Mugs *Coffee Mug Ceramic 400 F seconds Medium/High Flare Mug Ceramic 400 F 120 seconds Medium/High *These instructions are applicable for internally coloured mugs, colour change mugs, panel mugs, and standard mugs. The supplier of the flare mugs recommends 200 C for 1.5 minutes upright then another 1.5 minutes upside down but we have found that 193 C for 120 seconds is appropriate for our press. When ready, the mug is removed from the press, the transfer paper removed and the mug is placed into a bucket of water to cease the sublimation process. Please note by placing the mug upside down it absorbs more heat at the base of the mug which can help to sublimate more effectively and reliably. Another suggestion is to place the mug on a hot plate the pre-heat the bottom of the mug Important Note The new digital MugPro temperature should be set to about 400 O F Cont. Next Page The typical maximum image area in the MugPro is 200 x 75 mm (200 x 70mm for Flare mug). To produce an image that extends from the top to bottom of the mug the special rubber mug / tile mat should be used. The press temperature should be turned up about 15 O F and pressing time increased by about 1 to 1.5 minutes. To ensure a good clean edge, moisten the top and bottom edges of the applied transfer with water to moisten the fibre of the paper. This top to bottom imaging look very good with the new internally coloured coffee mugs. For those users without the MugPro the mug-wrap can be used to sublimate mugs in a domestic oven

Ceramic Tiles Ceramic Tiles Ceramic 200 C 210 seconds Medium/High Press times with tiles can vary greatly depending on press and the size of the tile. The mug/tile mat should be used to wrap the image around the curved edges of the tile. We have found that with the mug/tile mat, a pressing time of 2.5 minutes for the 107mm square tiles and 3 minutes for the 152mm square tiles is adequate. Some suppliers have recommended up to 5 minutes. Another method is to place the tile face down in the press and increase the time by at least 1.3 minutes. Sublimation T-Shirts & Polyester Fabric T-Shirts Polyester Fabric 200 C seconds Medium/High Preheat the t-shirt for 10 seconds to remove moisture. Use a teflon sheet or piece of cardboard inside the shirt to prevent ink blow through. Ensure that the press surface and base are clean so that the back of the t-shirt is not stained. Check the leading edge of the paper for any ink spots as these will leave undesired marks. Even trimming the leading edge of the paper is a good idea. Mouse Mats, Stubby Coolers, Rubber Coasters Mouse Mats Mouse Mats 200 C seconds Medium/High Stubby Coolers Mouse Mats 200 C seconds Medium/High Rubber Coasters Mouse Mats 200 C seconds Medium/High Remove the transfer as quickly as possible after pressing to prevent double imaging. When printing, add a 2mm bleed area on the print as the substrates expand when heated. Pocket & Shirt patches Patches Polyester Fabric 200 C seconds Medium/High Because the stitching lifts the transfer paper, colours close to the edge will be lighter. If you require a full colour coverage, place a small piece of teflon heat mat then a piece of cardboard under the sew on patch. This will raise the printable area slightly and allow you to print to the edge of the stitching. Sublimation Banners Banners Polyester Fabric 200 C seconds Medium/High Lay the unprinted banner on the press bed, square up the banner and press for 2 to 5 seconds. Tape the banner to the transfer paper squarely and press face up. Table /counter mats Table/Counter Mats Polyester Fabric 200 C seconds Medium/High For full bleed the actual print area should extend 2 to 3mm outside the printable area of the mat

Sublimation Jewellery Jewellery Metal (White) 200 C seconds Low/Medium Once cool, jewellery pieces can be assembled by hand or with needle nose pliers. The pieces can be attached to a necklace or charm bracelet with links (included with these pieces). Open the pointed end of the links with your fingernails or pliers. Put the pointed end through the mounting hole on the jewellery piece, and hang the wide end over the necklace or charm bracelet link. Pinch the link with the pliers of fingers to close shut. Earring hooks attach directly to the jewellery pieces without additional hardware. The loop on the end of the earring hook is opened slightly to allow you to slip it through the mounting hole on the jewellery. The point of the hook should point away from the sublimated face of the earring. Ask about our jewellery templates or download them form the members area of our web site. Ceramic Plates using the Plate Puck in a flat heat press 1. Pre-heat Puck in Flat press. Pre-heat for 10 minutes at 204 C. F. The press pressure will need to opened right up to accommodate the puck. 2. ALWAYS put paper or teflon between the Puck and the heating platen of the Flat press to avoid damage to the teflon coating on the Platen. 3. Tape 4.75 inch diameter Sublijet transfer to centre of the plate. Image area should be limited 4.25 inch diameter. 4. CAREFULLY remove puck from Flat press with a pair of pliers and set directly over the transfer. 5. Put plate and Puck in Flat press and press for 3 minutes at 204 C. DO NOT forget paper between Puck and platen! 6. Using oven mitts, remove plate and Puck from Flat press. Remove Puck from plate using pliers and set back in Flat press. 7. Immediately remove transfer from plate. CAUTION, plate will be HOT! Immerse plate under cold water. Additional Information We have found that by placing a green tile mat between the plate and the puck (while pressing) you can eliminate any gaps in the print. Sublimation Jig Saw Puzzles Puzzles Polyester Fabric 200 C seconds Medium Additional Information We recommend that you place a piece of plain paper over the jigsaw and press it for around 10 seconds to eliminate any moisture in the puzzle. When the transfer is printed and dried, place it on top of the jigsaw, place a piece of cardboard over the transfer and invert the jigsaw. Line up the print area of the jigsaw and tape the transfer with heatproof tape. Invert the jigsaw and remove the top pieces of cardboard and place on the press with the transfer facing up. Note for A4 printers, in the driver set the paper printable size to maximum.
