Monday 12-1 Teaching Assistants: Johanna Mellis: Office Rachel Rothstein Office W 10:45-11:45 Keene 18 This class provides an analysis of the greatest premeditated atrocity in Western history the murder of nearly six million European Jews from It will approach this event chronologically and geographically but also from a variety of perspectives --from that of the killers, from that of the victims, and from that of the bystanders. We will also examine major historical arguments concerning the Holocaust s most crucial aspects. Students will attain a factual command of the major developments of the Holocaust within the context of Jewish, European, and World History and gain an introductory knowledge of differing historiographical and social scientific explanations. There is substantial reading, speaking and writing in this class, and I insist on commitment from you. It will be worth your while. Your grade will be determined as follows: Mid Term Examination (Mon, Feb 10, 6pm).. 30% Paper Assignment (2000 words Mon, Mar 31) % Discussion Participation % Final Examination % The two exams are based on identification questions and essays, and possible essay questions will be provided a week in advance of the exams. The paper will be an assignment in which you place one of the books you have read within broader historiographical debate. Discussion readings and discussion questions will be provided in advance. Policies: Tests cannot be made up and papers cannot be submitted late without prior approval, which shall be granted only for extreme circumstances. Attendance is mandatory and will figure into discussion grades. Academic dishonesty, including plagiarism, cheating on tests, handing in purchased work, and so on will result in a grade of F for the course and an immediate referral to the university authorities. New York: Pearson, 2013) This is the weekly text. Gross, Jan T. Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland. New York: Cohen, Rich. The Avengers: A Jewish War Story (New York, 2000) Levi, Primo. Survival in Auschwitz. (any edition will do). There will also be additional posted readings from documentary sources for discussion. They will be in weekly folders in Sakai under Resources. There will also be posted readings from Niewyk, Donald. The Holocaust: Problems and Perspectives of Interpretation. 4 th ed. New York, You will need these for the paper assignment. You may purchase the book, but it is not necessary that you do so. Grading Criteria is as follows: A-range 90s -- Excels Full command and facility with lecture and reading material with the ability to place it within larger historical context. B-range 80s Good Very solid understanding of material but without complete facility and command C-range 70s -- Fair Some understanding of major themes, lack of command with detail, or some understanding of detail but lack of contextual understanding. D-range 60s -- Poor Enough factual understanding to pass, but little to no contextual clarity. F-range Fails Lack of university level quality.
