5 Introduction RAELink2 Remote, Host, and Repeater compact, portable radiofrequency modems provide long-range wireless communication between remote portable gas monitors (PGMs) such as RAE Systems ppbrae Plus Plus, MultiRAE Plus, etc., and a base station/computer for comprehensive monitoring. Up to 32 monitors equipped with RAELink2 units can be networked with a single RAELink2 Host. In addition, for applications requiring long-distance monitoring or monitoring in locations with obstructions to clear line-of-sight communication, RAELink2 Repeaters extend the effective reach of the system. All three RAELink2 units share a common package design, but each is factory configured to act in one of the following three modes: 1. RAELink2 Remote. The RAELink2 Remote functions as a slave modem and communicates to a host modem with the same network ID. No interpretation of the data stream is performed. 2. RAELink2 Host. The RAELink2 Host functions as a host modem and communicates with multiple slave modems (such as the RAELink2 Remote and RAELink2 Repeater, as well as AreaRAE products) with the same network ID. No interpretation of the data stream is performed. 3. RAELink2 Repeater. The RAELink2 Repeater functions as a repeater for RAELink2 Remote slave modems (or AreaRAE series products) with the same network ID. No interpretation of the data stream is performed by the RAELink2 Repeater. Note: RAE Systems AreaRAE can be used instead of (or in addition to) RAELink2 Remote/portable gas monitor combinations in a single system. Introduction 1

14 RAELink2 Remote & Host Operation 1. Connect a portable gas monitor (PGM) such as a ppbrae Plus, MiniRAE 2000, or MultiRAE Plus to the RAELink2 Remote using the coiled cable or combination power cable. If you are using a third-party sensor or detector, you must use a RAELink2 Remote that is configured specifically for that unit. (The RAELink2 s label includes that unit s name.) Connect the serial cable s 4-pin circular connector to the PGM. (Third-party sensor or detector units require a cable that comes with the specifically configured RAELink2E Remote.) Connect the other end to the RAELink2E Remote. 2. Connect the RAELink2 Host to your host computer using the multifunction cable. The multi-function connector should be attached to the RAELink2 Host, and the DB9 connector should be firmly attached to the computer s DB9 serial port (insert the connector into the receptacle and then finger-tighten the connector s two long screws). Note: If your computer has a USB port instead of a DB9 serial connector, use a USB to 9-pin serial adapter (part number ) between the cable and the computer. Note: If you are using the RAELink2 Host in the field, make sure the battery is fully charged. If you are using it in a fixed location, make sure the charger is connected to the multi-function cable (or to an optional remote stationary cable) and AC/DC charger to power the RAELink2 Host. 3. Start your computer and ProRAE Remote software. 4. Turn on power to the RAELink2 Host. 5. Turn on power to the portable gas monitor. 5. Turn on the RAELink2 Remote. After a few seconds, the RAELink2 Remote s RF LED should turn green, indicating that it has established a connection with the system s RAELink2 Host. When the RAELink2 Host and the RAELink2 Remote start to communicate, the RF LED flashes red and green, indicating that the RAELink2 Remote is now exchanging data with the RAELink2 Host via the wireless link. 10 Operation

15 RAELink2 Repeater Operation The RAELink2 Repeater works only when the communication between the RAELink2 Host and the RAELink2 Remote is broken due to distance or obstructions. Turn on your RAELink2 units in the following order: 1. Turn on the power to the RAELink2 Host first. 2. Locate the RAELink2 Repeater between the Host and Remote, and turn it on. After a few seconds, the RAELink2 Repeater s RF LED should turn dim green, indicating that it has established a connection with the system s RAELink2 Host. 3. Turn on the RAELink2 Remote. The RAELink2 Remote and RAELink2 Repeater start to communicate, and the RAELink2 Repeater s RF LED flashes, indicating that it is now receiving and transmitting data via the wireless link.! IMPORTANT! Note: Always follow the exact sequence outlined above to turn on the RAELink2 units in order to ensure proper operation of the RAELink2 Repeater. Testing the RAELink2 Repeater 1. Make sure your system s RAELink2 Remote (or AreaRAE) and RAELink2 Host can communicate. Remove the antennas from the RAELink2 Remote (or AreaRAE) and the RAELink2 host. Move both instruments away from each other until communication is broken. 2. Turn on the RAELink2 Repeater with its antenna attached. 3. Place the RAELink2 Repeater s antenna between the RAELink2 Remote (or AreaRAE) and the RAELink2 Host. Turning the RAELink2 Repeater on and off should establish and break communication between the Remote and Host units. This verifies the repeater function. Operation 11
