WEAPON TRAINING ( INDIA ) By Hanshi Hiroshi Akamine from Okinawa (Japan) In Chennai from 8 Dec to 10 Dec TOURNAMENTS (INDIA & GERMANY ) I Have Also Organized Many Tournaments As Chief Technical Referee. 6. INTERNATIONAL REFREE COURSE (GERMANY) Officially participated as referee in world cup by Kobe Osaka in year 2002 in which 42 countries participated. 7. INTERNATIONAL INSTRUCTOR & KATA-KUMITE COURSE (GERMANY ) I have also completed TWO very important courses during world cup in which I have updated all latest changes in rules of karate-do and also kata course of all four major styles been affiliated by world karate federation. 3

JAPAN TRIP FOR SELECTION AS INDIA REPRSENTATIVE (NOV ) I have been appointed as the sole representative of JAPAN KARATE-DO KUNIBA-KAI INDIA HONBU (MOTOBUHA SHITO RYU) as a branch of JAPAN KARATE-DO KUNIBA-KAI (INTERNATIONAL) in India. I have all the powers to teach, promote and conduct a test for students, members till Japanese Shodan (Japanese black belt.) It was not an easy job to do, but my positive attitude, & lot of hard work enabled me to achieve this level, I & my students have a new family now. I proudly announce my representation in India as chief instructor and technical director of Japan karate-do kuniba-kai international.my 7 days trip of Japan where I trained, taught and cleared lot of other important tests, have also given very strong impression to Japanese karate masters about karate standard of India. Website- E -mail - info@goforkarate.com India Tournament Shihan-Dai Satharasinghe and students participated in the 1st Inter Continental Asia WUKO Karate Championships, on 27th to 30th November 2008 in Hyderabad India. 5 Tokyo Tournament The 19 th World Karate Championships were held in Tokyo in November. This represents a return to Japan after seventeen years of this event being held in other countries. Kuniba Kai had the distinct honor of being the Kai with the most representative countries in attendance; there were seven countries representing Kuniba Kai, including Sweden, Italy, Venezuela, Israel, and of course, Japan. A historic commemorative poster was given to Soke Kozo Kuniba by the Japan Karate Federation (JKF) Vice President Keiichi Hatsumi. 6 Shihan Ky Buon Tang, Swedish Honbucho for Kuniba Kai, attended the tournament. In the photo below, he is seen with Kuniba-Soke and the then JKF Vice President. Soke Kozo Kuniba, JKF Vice President Keiichi Hatsumi, Shihan Ky Buon Tang Recently, we have learned of some changes at JKF. Soke Kozo Kuniba will be meeting with JKF officials in Tokyo this month. 7 Florida/USA Clinics Two clinics were conducted in Florida in February, featuring Soke Kozo Kuniba. He was assisted by Kyoshi Darren Myers, USA Honbucho. Altamonte Springs Dojo: Renshi Jim King hosted a clinic on February 7 at his Altamonte American Karate Academy. Though smaller in attendance than last October s clinic, the training was nevertheless focused and beneficial. Niseishi (Nijushi-Ho) Kata was highlighted, as was the usual review of Kuniba Ryu Goshin Do. After the clinic, promotional exams following results: were conducted with the Promotions: Meghan Reed, Sho Dan; Felipe Garzon, Sho Dan; Chris Malch, Yon Dan. Congratulations to all! 7

8 Ocala Dojo: Kyoshi Bill Woodard hosted a clinic with Soke Kuniba at the Ocala Karate Dojo. Soke was assisted by Darren Meyers from the Kuniba Kai VA. They went over the Kihon techniques, Kata and Bunkai of Motobu Ha Shito Ryu Karate Do. Also some very interesting Goshin Do techniques were practiced. There were members of Hayashi Ha and Motobu Ha Shito Ryu from all around Florida working together. After the Seminar, Soke conducted Yudansha Testing in Karate-Do and Kobudo. Everyone had a great time, and look forward to the upcoming Summit to be held at the Honbu in Japan. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu Soke. 9 The Pen, the Sword By Kyoshi James Herndon The expression the pen is mightier than the sword is an adage coined by Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839 for his play Richelieu; Or the Conspiracy. It is taken to mean that words can be more powerful than weapons, when it comes to changing attitudes and behavior. I am a man of words. As a psychologist and a professor, words have power in what I do. And, as the newsletter editor, words are my medium to make a positive contribution to Kuniba Kai. Words are my sword. But, there s another point of view that needs to be mentioned. The Eastern (Japanese) view is that the pen and sword are one. The way of the pen (brush) is Shodo: Shodo The way of the sword is Kendo: Kendo It is said that to master one is to master the other; mastery of any art is mastery of the self. Moreover, those who seek mastery should seek balance. Whereas the sword represents physical skill and prowess, the pen represents cultural refinement and sensitivity. Pursue both paths toward enlightenment. 9

The Japan Karate-Do Federation (JKF) has recognized only Kuniba Kai as the organization authorized to teach Motobu-Ha ShitoRyu Karate-Do, the style of the Kuniba family. No other claims to the style can be substantiated. From Soke Kosei Kokuba (Kuniba), through Soke Kosho (Shogo) Kuniba, to Soke Kozo Kuniba, the style continues to evolve.
