2 Preface Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) is a venture initiated by Complete Human Resource Solutions (CHRS). It is a three-fold program designed specifically to not only sensitize motivated young people about the social problems Pakistan is facing at the moment but it also aims to impart 'life skills' among the youth of Pakistan which would assist them to tackle practical life with ease. YEP also offers a mentoring session with a guest speaker to discuss practical solutions to the problems faced by the youth of Pakistan. Students would first have to attend the 'life skills' training which would prepare for the next phase of our internship which involves community work. Community work assumes that within any community there is a wealth of knowledge and experience which, if used in creative ways, results in high levels of participation and can be channeled into collective action to achieve the communities' desired goals. After working with the target group i.e. students from government school for a specified period of time the students would then have a mentoring session with a guest speaker to make the lessons leant during this internship program worthwhile. The purpose of this kind of youth work is to facilitate and support young people's growth through dependence to interdependence, by encouraging their personal and social development and enabling them to have a voice, influence and place in their communities and society. Youth work is informed by a set of beliefs which include a commitment to equal opportunity, to young people as partners in learning and decision-making and to helping young people to develop their own sets of values. We recognize youth work by these qualities: Ü Offering services in places where young people can choose to participate; Ü Encouraging young people to be critical in their responses to their own experience and to the world around them; Ü Working with young people to help them make informed choices about their personal responsibilities within their communities; Ü Working alongside school and college-based education to encourage young people to achieve and fulfill their potential; and it work with other agencies to encourage society to be responsive to young people's needs. The purpose of the field education program is to provide students within the academic program with an opportunity to learn hands-on through an internship work experience. Students that complete the course work which focuses on other generalist subject practice should be equipped with solid knowledge of theoretical frameworks of social setup that guide generalist practice, an understanding and acceptance of social work values and ethics, and well developed skills related to beginning social work practice. Field education in the along with conventional study course provides the student with an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of social service systems in urban-rural settings, apply theoretical knowledge to urban problems such as poverty, and to determine how to access appropriate community resources. In addition, students learn to communicate oral, written, and technological information reflecting professional social work skills. Youth and Community Work is about exploring the relationship between theory and practice, using student experiences in the field to address issues of diversity, empowerment and rights. This program is innovative, providing students with skills in management for the future; depending on student option choices, the program will facilitate career paths in diverse areas of youth and community work. This community work seeks to give students grounding in the theoretical concepts involved in youth and community work with the chance to explore and reflect on their own practice through observation, and field work. 1

3 Structure of Youth Empowerment Program 1- Selection of Students Youth Empowerment Program In consultation with the school system, total of 30 potential students will be selected who further will be divided into groups of 5 participants making 6 groups eventually. Selection of students will be the responsibility of a selection committee having 2 representatives from the school management and 2 representatives from CHRS. Students would have to their C.V along with complete registration form to before the specified deadline. The eligibility criteria mainly fall on individual's interview, communication skills and responses to the questions asked in the registration form. Students must depict the understanding of handling responsibility required for social development and possess strong commitment towards adding in more after learning through experiences. 2- Life Skill Training Once the work force of passionate young people has been selected they will be given the initial training i.e. Life Skill training; the term 'Life Skills' refers to the skills usually associated with managing and living a better quality of life, they help us to accomplish our ambitions and live to our full potential. Life skills are the behaviors used appropriately and responsibly in the management of personal affairs as well as social affairs. They are a set of human skills acquired via teaching or direct experience that are used to handle problems and questions commonly encountered in daily human life. The subject varies greatly depending on social norms and community expectations. In order to successfully navigate the complexities of social life, these young people will need a specific set of skills to encounter the challenges with efficiency. For this purpose 3 day Life Skill Training Program will be conducted to train students on the following skill set: Responsibility Understanding Emotions and managing strong Emotions. Asking Questions to Clarify the Situation Dealing Effectively with Criticism Conflict Management Project of Life Reducing Intimidation and Bullying Time Management What are my Rights and Responsibilities as worker Three Keys of being Good Employee Job Performance Evaluation The power of positive attitude Hygiene and dress- preparing my image Making a positive first impression Developing confidence in self and others Respecting self and others; Identify Assertiveness: Speaking directly, honestly & Responsibility Refusal skills: Standing up for yourself Solving problems Making or Responding to Customer Complaints Workplace protocol Being a good team player Recognizing and responding to workers harassment and abuse 2

4 3- Topic to Choose Once the students have gone through extensive life skill training, they would be encouraged to choose their topic for field work voluntarily; this will give them space to make choices as per their interest showing enhanced performance and brining better results. Students would be guided well while making their choices. A group will have to submit a statement of justification for choosing particular topic and also presenting their project statement. This statement will show their understanding towards the topic and strategic approach to deal with the anticipated problems. Any weaknesses assessed at this stage will be covered up with the help of proper counseling by the program supervisor. The areas of topics for youth empowerment program will be a) Education through simulations and videos b) Cultural heritage and Current Affairs c) Career Counseling d) IT Skills e) Presentation Skills Each group will prepare its problem statement for one of the topic areas selected and will justify their selection and problem statement with providing problem solving approach. The committee will review their statement of justification and approve after modifications where and if required. 4- Work plan Keeping in view the busy and demanding schedule of students, it is suggested to hold community work exercise once a week, every Saturday. Hence, in three month's course there will be 12 working days, maximum. Students will be given proper work plan with schedule to guide and lead them in their field work having the targeted areas for their work specified. A work plan will be given to all the groups once they will have their statement of justification approved. 5- Mentoring session with a guest speaker During the whole community service project students would be continuously guided by the YEP team; however, towards the end we would arrange a meeting with a guest speaker. The mentoring session would be followed by an evaluation session where the team would discuss the lessons learnt during the whole internship. 3

5 6- Report submission After 12 days of progressive field work students have to submit their community work report within a week time. The report will reflect their topic area, targeted area, people profile (who were involved in their work), problem statement, major findings (preferably quantitative and qualitative both), critical analysis of the existing social situation (according to area of topic selected), conclusion and suggestions. 7-Closing and certificate distribution In the following week a closing ceremony will be arranged for the students where the group which performed best will have the opportunity to present their report with fellow students and other participants, educationist, media persons, representatives of local government, representatives of international organization, representatives of social and civil organizations and other high profiles who would be attending the ceremony to encourage the work of students.
