AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism 9 Scoring Guidelines The College Board The College Board is a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity. Founded in 19, the association is composed of more than 5,6 schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations. Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents, 3, high schools and 3,8 colleges through major programs and services in college readiness, college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning. Among its best-known programs are the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT and the Advanced Placement Program (AP ). The College Board is committed to the principles of excellence and equity, and that commitment is embodied in all of its programs, services, activities and concerns. 9 The College Board. 4 (b) (i) AP PHYSICS C: ELECTICITY AND MAGNETISM 9 SCOING GUIDELINES Question 1 (continued) Distribution of points For using Gauss s law Q enclosed Ú E i d A For substituting the correct expression for the flux through a Gaussian sphere E4π r E inside Q enclosed, r < Q enclosed, r< 4π r For substituting the appropriate expression for the electric field, consistent with the answer to part (a), including a minus sign 6Qr Q enclosed, r < - 3 4π 4π r Q 3 6Qr enclosed, r< - 3 (ii) points From Gauss s law as shown above E Q enclosed 4π r For correctly substituting the electric field from part (a) into the expression above Q Q enclosed, r> Eoutside 4π r 4π r Q enclosed, r> Q The field points outward, so the charge is positive. For the correct enclosed charge for r > Qenclosed, r> + Q 9 The College Board. All rights reserved.

AP PHYSICS C: ELECTICITY AND MAGNETISM 9 SCOING GUIDELINES Question 1 (continued) Distribution of points (c) points There is charge residing on the surface of the sphere. For indicating that the total enclosed charge equals the charge at the surface plus all the charge inside the sphere Qenclosed, r> Qsurface + Qenclosed, r< when r Qsurface Qenclosed, r> - Qenclosed, r< when r For substituting the correct value of Q enclosed, r< when r Ê 3 6Q ˆ Qsurface Q - Á - 3 Ë surface Qsurface ( 6 ) Q Q - - Q 7Q Note: The student could earn for a correct qualitative description of the charge configuration, even if the surface charge was not calculated. (d) For having the graph for r < consistent with the answer to part a (i) For having the graph for r > consistent with the answer to part a (ii), with a finite value at r For having a step discontinuity at r indicating the presence of charge at the surface (Having both graphs asymptotic to r does not constitute the correct discontinuity.) 9 The College Board. A P 15A)(. 7Ω ) For the correct answer P 11 W Alternate Points (b) For an arrow directed from a to b For correctly indicating that the conventional current is from a to b O that the electron current is from b to a For correctly indicating that the electric field is in the same direction as the conventional current O in the opposite direction to the electron current Alternate solution: For an arrow directed from a to b For stating that point a is at a higher potential than point b For stating that electric field points from higher to lower potential Alternate Points Note: The third point could be earned for an incorrect field direction consistent with an incorrect current or potential drop direction. 9 The College Board. All rights reserved.

AP PHYSICS C: ELECTICITY AND MAGNETISM 9 SCOING GUIDELINES Question (continued) Distribution of points (c) points For recognizing that the electric field is uniform in the bar and stating the relationship between V and E for a uniform field E V ( 9. V )( 8. m )( 5. T) ( 7. W) O F ( 15. A )( 8. m )( 5. T) F 5. N (e) For arrows indicating an electric field directed toward the top of the bar 9 The College Board. All rights reserved.

AP PHYSICS C: ELECTICITY AND MAGNETISM 9 SCOING GUIDELINES Question (continued) Distribution of points (f) For recognizing that when there is no longer deflection, the electric force is equal and opposite to the magnetic force FE FB For the correct expressions for the electric force and the magnetic force FE qe FB qub qe qub E ub For correctly substituting values E m s 5. T ( )( ) -4 E V m Units point For the correct units on at least two numerical answers 9 The College Board. All rights reserved.

AP PHYSICS C: ELECTICITY AND MAGNETISM 9 SCOING GUIDELINES Question 3 15 points total Distribution of points (a) 4 points Using the expression for the magnitude of the induced emf dfm e - dt For recognizing that the area is constant in time db e A dt For correctly taking the time derivative of the magnetic field db d ( at + b ) a dt dt For a correct expression for the emf For a positive value for the magnitude of the emf e al (b) (i) points The resistors are in series, so the total current flows through both of them. I ε tot For correctly calculating the resistance of the two resistors in series tot  i For correctly substituting the value of the emf from part (a) I al Alternate ε solution: I The resistors have equal resistance, so the emf across each is half the total emf. For correctly substituting the emf across bulb, consistent with the answer to part (a) ( al ) I For correctly substituting the resistance of bulb ( al ) al I Alternate Points 9 The College Board. All rights reserved.

(b) (ii) (continued) AP PHYSICS C: ELECTICITY AND MAGNETISM 9 SCOING GUIDELINES Question 3 (continued) Distribution of points For indicating that current flows upward in bulb or counterclockwise around the loop (c) points P I V I V For substituting one correct value into one of the above expressions For substituting a second correct value in the chosen expression Ê al ˆÊaL ˆ P Á Ë Á Ë 4 P a L 4 Ê al ˆ O P Á Ë ÊaL ˆ O P Á Ë (d) 4 points For indicating that bulb 1 is brighter For any indication that the emf is the same as in the original circuit (since there is no flux through the added loop) For stating that adding a bulb in parallel with bulb decreases the overall resistance of the circuit For stating that decreasing the overall resistance increases the overall current, which is equal to the current in bulb 1 (e) points For indicating that bulb 1 is the same brightness as in the original circuit For a complete and correct justification Examples: Since each loop has half the area, each has half the original emf. But each also has half the resistance. This means the current and thus the power in bulb 1 is the same. The two loops are essentially identical. Separately, the flux through each loop would create an emf that is counterclockwise. Since these emfs are in opposite directions in the central wire, the net effect is that there is no emf in that wire. Therefore the situation is equivalent to the original one. 9 The College Board.
