3 With the release of VERITAS Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers, Backup Exec 7.x customers will have several options to consider before updating to VERITAS Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. This paper is designed to highlight those options and assist customers who choose to update from Backup Exec 7.x. Please read this entire document before starting the update process. INTRODUCTION VERITAS Software released the 7.3 version of Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000 in June of The 7.3 version subsequently entered into the End of Life and End of Normal Support phase in March 2002 as per the published VERITAS Support policies. VERITAS Software recognizes many users will upgrade from Backup Exec for Windows NT 7.x to take advantage of the enhanced performance and numerous new features available in Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. While Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers supports direct upgrades from all 8.x versions of Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000, direct upgrades from Backup Exec for Windows NT 7.x to Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers cannot be performed without first installing the 8.6 version of Backup Exec. UPGRADE OPTIONS FOR BACKUP EXEC FOR WINDOWS NT AND WINDOWS 2000 V7.X Backup Exec for Windows NT 7.x customers have two options when upgrading to Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. Customers can elect to either: 1. Perform a new Installation of Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers by first uninstalling V7.x of Backup Exec for Windows NT and Windows 2000 then installing Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Server with this option, it is important to know that all data such as configuration settings, jobs, job history, media information, device information and catalogs from Backup Exec 7.x will be lost. Please see the section below titled "NEW INSTALLATION" for complete information. -Or- 2. Migrate from v7.x. Upgrade to Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers by first installing Backup Exec for Windows NT/ as an intermediary upgrade to retain configuration settings, jobs, job history, media information, device information and catalogs. After the intermediary upgrade to Backup Exec 8.6, upgrade to Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. Please see the section below titled MIGRATING DATA FROM BACKUP EXEC FOR WINDOWS NT 7.X TO BACKUP EXEC 9.0 FOR WINDOWS SERVERS." NEW INSTALLATION Customers who do not wish to retain any configuration settings, jobs, job history, media information, device information and catalogs from their 7.x version of Backup Exec can simply: Step 1. Write down all Backup Exec 7.x serial numbers available on the "Help About Backup Exec" menu in Backup Exec. Step 2. Uninstall the 7.x version of Backup Exec completely from their system. Step 3.Install Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. The serial numbers provided with the upgrade should be entered during the Backup Exec 9.0 install*. 3

4 * Customers who have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract should enter the serial numbers provided from the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers VIP update. If you have misplaced the 9.0 VIP maintenance update CD and/or serial numbers, contact** VERITAS at the address below for a re-issue of your Backup Exec 9.0 serial numbers: ** Depending on volume, delivery of 8.6 serial numbers may be delayed. To assist VERITAS in expediting your request, please include as much of the information listed below: Company Name (required) VIP Agreement # VIP Customer # Address: (if no VIP Agreement and Customer #) Contact Name, and phone Customers who do not have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract will need to: A. Purchase a VERITAS Backup Exec VIP Competitive Upgrade with a VERITAS Technical Services contract (Vsupport) from VERITAS or their VERITAS reseller (requires the user to call VERITAS to "activate" the Competitive Upgrade serial number), and B. Purchase new Backup Exec 9.0 agents/options Note 1: To purchase a VIP Competitive Upgrade, purchase new Backup Exec agents/options or activate the "Competitive Upgrade" serial number, please see the section titled "VERITAS Regional Sales Contact Information". Note 2: For more information, see Installing Backup Exec Using the Installation Program in the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers Administrator's Guide. Note 3: For additional licensing issues, please see the section below titled "BACKUP EXEC 9.0 FOR WINDOWS SERVERS UPGRADE CONSIDERATIONS". Note 4: Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers is fully backward compatible with the tape format of Backup Exec 7.x. Customers can catalog and restore from any 7.x tape through Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. MIGRATING DATA FROM BACKUP EXEC FOR WINDOWS NT AND WINDOWS 2000 V7.X TO BACKUP EXEC 9.0 FOR WINDOWS SERVERS As mentioned earlier, only Backup Exec for Windows NT/ x can be directly upgraded to Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. Most settings and all data such as jobs, job history, media information, device information and catalogs from previous versions of Backup Exec 8.x are kept. Therefore, migrating from Backup Exec version 7.x involves a two-step update process: Step 1. Upgrade Backup Exec for Windows NT 7.x to Backup Exec for Windows NT/ Step 2. Upgrade Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 v8.6 to Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers Customers who have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract will need the serial numbers provided from the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers VIP Update and the Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 v8.6 VIP 4

If you have misplaced the VIP maintenance update CD and/or serial numbers, contact** VERITAS at the address below for a re-issue of your Backup Exec VIP serial numbers: Customers who do not have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract will need to: A. Those customers who have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract should enter the serial numbers provided from the Backup Exec for Windows NT/ VIP Update. If you have misplaced the 8.6 VIP maintenance update CD and/or serial numbers, contact** VERITAS at the address below for a re-issue of your Backup Exec 8.6 serial numbers: Those customers who do not have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract will need to install Backup Exec 8.6 as an evaluation version (do not enter a Backup Exec serial number when prompted). Remember to: Replace Backup Exec 7.x with Backup Exec 8.6 when prompted. Install Backup Exec 8.6 in the same directory in which Backup Exec 7.x resides. You cannot have separate installations of different versions on the same computer. If prompted, restart the computer to complete the configuration after the installation is complete. When upgrading to Backup Exec 8.6, make sure all the "Components" that were used in Backup Exec 7.x are selected in the "Backup Exec Install Options" dialog box during the installation. 5

6 2. Install Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers. Customers who have a current VERITAS Support maintenance contract should enter the serial numbers provided from the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers VIP Update. 7 BACKUP EXEC 9.0 FOR WINDOWS SERVERS UPGRADE CONSIDERATIONS Backup Exec Multi-Server Edition Backup Exec Multi-Server Edition is no longer available as a license purchase. Customers who want to protect remote Windows servers must purchase a Backup Exec Remote Agent (CAL) for Windows for EACH Windows server to be backed up over the network. Backup Exec Autoloader Option Autoloader Option is no longer available as a license purchase. Backup Exec 7.x customers will automatically receive support for one drive in a tape library. A Library Expansion Option license must be purchased for each additional drive in the library (greater than 1). Microsoft SQL Agent If using a pre-v8.x Backup Exec SQL agent, you must purchase the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers SQL Agent Upgrade to protect SQL Server It is recommended to upgrade the agent after the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers upgrade completes. Microsoft Exchange Agent If using a pre-v8.x Backup Exec Exchange agent, you must purchase the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers Exchange Agent Upgrade to protect Exchange Server It is recommended to upgrade the agent after the Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers upgrade completes. Intelligent Disaster Recovery Customers who want to protect remote Windows computers using Intelligent Disaster Recovery (IDR) must purchase an Intelligent Disaster Recovery Additional Client for EACH remote Windows computer to be protected by IDR. Agent Platform and Device Support Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers supports a greater number of different hardware devices and software platforms than the 7.x and 8.x versions of Backup Exec. In some cases, certain platform and device support is no longer available in Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers.
