2 Kathy Davis Susana Herrera WoRkshop proposal Kathy Davis The starting point is really the critical determinant of how an alphabet evolves Thomas Ingmire. Zheng Banqiao was fond of painting bamboo, rocks and orchids. he painted orchids like writing characters, and wrote characters like painting orchids. Chinese calligraphy. Chen Tingyou. If we start from letters the result will be pretty much the same, but if we move to a much broader shape resource in nature such as flowers, leaves and branches, then the result would be a whole set of new possibilities. We will try to find the similarities between letterforms and the shapes we may find in nature. We will research into the Taoist principles of beauty (empathy or resonance, vital rhythm or chi-yun, reticence, and the empty space or gestalt, western concept) to broaden our graphic and design solutions. The Japanese brush and the cola pen will be our tools, first working with walnut ink and then moving on to color rendering. The final form will be a sculptural book in which natural reverberations will have priority over legibility. Coto Mendoza Viviana Lebron

5 MARInA soria REsUME I was born in Buenos Aires, I am married and mother of three teenage daughters. I studied Fine Arts and Graphic Design & Advertising and began lecturing on Graphic Design and Editorial Design in the school of Architecture, Design & Urban planning (UBA), first on a part-time basis and then as an Associate professor in Typography in I have attended five International Calligraphy Conferences in the UsA (san Diego 1998, sonoma 2000, ohio 2003, seattle 2004, portland 2012) and three in Europe, (Brugge 2006, Arezzo 2008, sunderland 2011), taking courses with well known calligraphers such as Thomas Ingmire, Brody neuenschwander, Ewan Clayton and Monica Dengo, amongst others. Along with other artists, in 1997 we founded Calígrafos de la Cruz del sur (southern Cross Calligraphers) the first calligraphic guild in south America. In 2003 I was awarded with the ACA s scholarship. I have received national & international awards and exhibited my pictorial and calligraphic works in art galleries and museums in Argentina, Uruguay, UsA, spain, Japan, Germany and Russia and in 2014 norway. My works are part of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in Russia and the hans-joachim Burgert s collection of calligraphy at the Akademie der künst in Berlin, as well as in the Arezzo public Library in Italy, and the Latin American Collection for the Yale University and the savannah College of Arts in the UsA. I have published articles in specialized magazines and my work may be seen in Letter Arts Review Annuals, Bound & Lettered and in the ACA s newsletters (UsA), novum (Germany), Typo (Mexico), pulso Diseño (Uruguay) and several local magazines and in several pages in the internet such as (Mexico). Recently, my work has been extensively featured in the Letter Arts Review 26:3. At present I work as an experimental calligrapher and a graphic artist, and continue to teach in my own studio and abroad. next year I will be teaching in the UsA during the moth of august.
