30 Where? Dharamsala, northern India Elevation: 1,800 metres
31 Why? Buddhist perspective: "Since many years I have been interested in modern science, which has made great contributions to the improvement of the quality of life. I have personally been engaged in dialogues with scientists and have found them extremely useful and enriching. I also believe that modern science can benefit from Buddhist perspectives. Today, science means a valid method of explaining the observed reality. The wellfounded disciplines of modern science are in a way related to Buddhism since Buddhist philosophy also searches and truth through rational analysis, similar to that of science." The Dalai Lama (January 5, 2002)
32 Buddhist perspective (cont.): Cultural reasons Slow down cultural bleeding to the west by bringing the best the west has to offer science to the east Educate the Tibetan scholars (monks) who will modernize the language Provide professional development to Tibetan teachers Spiritual reasons Sharpen Buddhist argumentation by inducing cognitive/epistemological/ontological conflict on practitioners Develop new tools of analysis and interpretation Political reasons Create good will ambassadors
