1 Extra City Kunsthal Open Call Call for projects Extra City, Deadline 14 October 2016 Extra City is a Kunsthal that finds inspiration in the city for depicting different visions of our future, by encouraging new links between contemporary (inter)national art and artists, researchers, and city dwellers. The full mission and vision can be found here. Last year, Extra City Kunsthal in Antwerp updated its mission. The organisation has renewed its structure. From 2017 onwards, it will be coordinated by a director who will carry out the concrete implementation of the programme together with a small team of (international) curators and artists, each for a maximum period of three years. In that context, Extra City is launching an open call for project proposals to be realised during Applicants can submit a proposal for: 1. A project-based collaboration: the realisation of one project or one concrete proposal 2. An intensive, long-term collaboration: the realisation of a programme component or project spread over a maximum of 3 years Aside from the concrete collaboration that forms part of the artistic programme, the artist or curator is involved with the operation of the Kunsthal during the intensive period, working together with the team in reflecting and debating about the role, position, and operation of the Kunsthal at the artistic, organisational, and societal level. This additional commitment can take various forms (also in terms of time spent) and will be discussed in more detail with the selected candidates at a later stage. The submitted projects can be very diverse: we welcome proposals for exhibitions, creations, public programmes, workshops, lecture series, debates, research projects, film screenings, performances, publications, reflective and/or discursive projects, or completely new formats. The proposals must align with the new mission and vision of the organisation, but it has been a conscious choice to provide very little in the way of limitations or concrete direction at this point. We are instead giving voice to curators and artists, in order to create from the submitted proposals a sharp, urgent, varied, and pre-eminent programme for the coming years. An international jury will make a selection of the submitted projects for further elaboration and realisation.

2 Composition of the jury The international jury is composed of the following members: Wilfried Cooreman (collector, board member Extra City) Hedwig Fijen (founding director of Manifesta) Nav Haq (curator M HKA) Jérôme Sans (tbc) (curator, artistic director, co-founder Palais de Tokyo) Jorinde Seijdel (editor-in-chief Open!, head Studium Generale Gerrit Rietveld Academie) Adinda Van Geystelen (director Extra City) Arno van Roosmalen (tbc) (director Stroom Den Haag) Sara Weyns (director Middelheim Museum) Assessment criteria - The project s artistic quality, its focus and relevance / the urgency thereof both socially and in today s international art context - The extent to which the proposal contributes to the (inter)national discourse on artistic practice today - The extent to which the project proposal satisfies the new mission and vision of the organisation - The extent to which the proposal takes into account the project s logistical feasibility and financial margins (see below) and the applicant s commitment to working with the director to obtain any additional financial support for the project s realisation - The extent to which the applicant has an eye for (international) collaboration and exchanges with partner organisations (if applicable) - The extent to which the project can be of value to artists in Antwerp and Flanders - The extent to which the proposal takes into account the development of innovative and experimental forms of art education and participation, and the social embedding of the artistic project - The extent to which the project takes substantive clues from the urban context of Antwerp, on the one hand, and/or the international urban context, on the other (NB: the word urban is interpreted very broadly here, taking in the political, economical, social, demographical, urbanistic, cultural) Regarding a long-term collaboration: - The extent to which the petitioner is available and motivated for an intensive multi-year commitment and is open to dialogue and reflection with other curators / artists / citizens / researchers / scientists /... Submission of project proposals Project proposals are to be submitted in the form of a PDF document (consisting of the application form and the budget estimate; maximum 8 MB) and sent via no later than 8pm on Friday, 14 October 2016, to Adinda.Van.Geystelen@extracity.org, with Open Call in the subject line. Language: Dutch or English Extra City is currently looking for substantive proposals for projects and collaborations, rather than detailed, fully developed dossiers. We deliberately want to limit the workload involved in

3 participating in this call. The project must comprise the following elements: (A) Application form (download here) 1. Applicant s details (full name, address, phone, ) 2. CV or portfolio with a list of exhibitions and other relevant informa tion (e.g. online information about previous projects, references) 3. Motivation for participation (max. 200 words) 4. Brief summary of the proposed project (max. 60 words) 5. Project concept, to include information on methodology and format (research, exhibition, lecture series, participatory project...), planning process, partners (if applicable), and/or information about the artists involved (max. 800 words) 6. Proposed public activities that can accompany the project (possibly a proposal of potential partners for collaboration) (max. 300 words) 7. Fundraising plan for acquiring extra budget (mandatory for long-term collaborative projects, and a plus for one-off projects) (B) Budget estimate (download here) Financial framework and Extra City proposal At this stage, Extra City does not require a detailed budget for the proposed projects, only an indication of the project budget. In regard to the concrete realisation of the project, the budget will be further discussed and finalised in close consultation with Extra City. Because Extra City is a small kunsthal, we want to make it clear that for a large (exhibition) project, we can only provide a maximum initial amount of 50,000. However, if additional resources are needed to realise a project, Extra City will look at possibilities for extending the budget. Additionally, Extra City is offering its infrastructure as well as the expertise and enthusiasm of its small team of five people. For a long-term intensive collaboration, the extra commitment towards Extra City will get a separate financial compensation. Vision Extra City departs from the city and connects back to it. We focus on urban reality in all its facets as central to the challenges of the 21st century. Extra City wants to scrutinize it: our programme reveals underexposed opportunities and conflicts and looks for aesthetic or sociopolitical seams in the urban fabric; it nourishes new imaginations and encourages artistic research and debate about the city. We want to make a difference to our environment in lots of ways, which is why we always work in conjunction with other (supra)local forces, artistic and non-artistic. Our programme is as multi-layered and changeable as the urban issues: varied, sometimes very sharp, but never too fast. Extra City creates extra thinking and breathing space in the city, not as an isolated comfort zone, but as an open area where a society in transition is reflected upon across borders. Extra City works with art that breathes the spirit of our time. It appeals to us because it likes to dig deeper and slower and to enter into probing dialogue with the reality that lies beyond the art world. The art Extra City presents or commissions is often complex and challenging, but in its concern for the city, is open for any curious visitor. Extra City is looking for the same urban involvement in its artists, researchers, and curators. We offer them a creative sanctuary and the city, for daring experiments with exhibitions, debates, and collaborations. With its artists, Extra City wants to stimulate, inspire, and confront. We offer artists a framework in which their work is displayed in optimal conditions and is interpreted and discussed in both a local and international environment. Extra City is responsible for the public understanding of contemporary art. For us, the public is as important as the artists. We see our visitors as a rich and diverse collection of knowledge and experience. Since people make the city, Extra City wants to be the spot where people feel welcome, a place abuzz with meaningful contact between city dwellers and artists, laypersons and connoisseurs. Our home in Antwerp is a hub for (inter)national, intercultural, and interdisciplinary collaborations that through art contribute to the concept of a society in transition. All the exhibitions are free to visit. We are creating a context in which everyone is empowered with the necessary tools to make their own artistic work, even if it seems less accessible. Extra City reveals art, and contributes to a broader public platform for artistic reflection and imagination.

5 History and context Extra City Kunsthal was founded in 2004 by Wim Peeters, and initially located in a grain silo in the Antwerp harbour area. In 2006, Anselm Franke was appointed artistic director and the institution moved to a former industrial space in Antwerp North. From 2011 till 2015, Mihnea Mircan served as Extra City s artistic director. In September 2013, the Kunsthal inaugurated its new venue in a multicultural neighbourhood in Antwerpen-Berchem. Inside the former industrial building of Wasserij Goossens, in addition to Extra City s exhibition spaces (a total of 1000 m2 spread over three floors), there is still enough room for a studio (for 10 artists), a bar, a small projection space/auditorium (50 seats), and offices. The building is shared with partner organisations Platform 0090, Gagarin, Local 01, Kunst/Werk, and Antwerp Art vzw. In 2016, the mission, vision, and structure of Extra City have been updated; from September onwards, Adinda Van Geystelen will be fulfilling the leadership role. At the beginning of 2017, we shall be welcoming the first team of curators and artists aiming to make the mission of Extra City tangible through exhibitions, debates, and public activities.
