3 CILD POPULTION ( GE GOUP) 4 CILD POPULTION ( GE GOUP) 4.1 INTODUCTION population encompasses that proportion of the total population of the country which lies in the age group of years which is an important indicator since it overlooks a delicate segment of the population. India is the second most populous country in the world where.12 percent of her population lies in the tender age bracket of years as per the provisional Census 2011 figures. The decline in total child population since Census 2001 stands at 5,030,327 where the decline in rural child population is 8,885 which is in contrast to the increase in urban child population reported as 3,855. The highest rural and urban child population have been reported from Uttar Pradesh whereas the lowest figures for both the above mentioned categories are recorded from Lakshadweep. The chapter deals with rural-urban classification of data upto the district and tahsil level. In addition there is a detailed comparison of the state s rural-urban child population with the figures reported at the national level, with its neighbouring states and among the Empowered ction Group (EG) states as well. 4.2 UL-UBN CILD POPULTION IN INDI ND MDY PDES s per the provisional Census 2011 figures, India has recorded an aggregate child population of 8,789,287 which comprises of a rural child population of 1,585,5 and an urban child population of 41,203,773. In terms of absolute figures the total child population has witnessed a decline of 5,030,327 from 2001 to It is interesting to note that there has been a sharp decline of 8,884,983 in rural India coupled with an increase of 3,854,656 in the urban areas. Madhya Pradesh has recorded a total child population of 10,548,295 which can be segregated into a rural child population of 8,2,745 and an urban child population of 2,4,550. In the decade , Madhya Pradesh has witnessed a decline of 233,919 in terms of child population which is much lower than the figure reported at the national level. From 2001 to 2011, a decline in rural child population of 310,999 and an increase in urban child population of 77,080 has been observed for the state. For Madhya Pradesh, the proportion of child population stands at.53 percent where the rural child population proportion is pegged at.48 percent and the urban child population is percent. similar trend is observed for both India and Madhya Pradesh where the decline in the proportion of child population is greater in the rural areas as compared to its urban counterpart as shown in Statement 4.2. 5 CILD POPULTION ( GE GOUP) Top and bottom five State/UTs by child population From the perspective of rural child population, the top five states with the highest figures are Uttar Pradesh (24,248,066), Bihar (,899,426), ajasthan (8,319,9), Madhya Pradesh (8,2,745) and West Bengal (7,535,228). The lowest numbers, in ascending order, are observed in Lakshadweep (1,771), Chandigarh (4,255), Daman & Diu (7,231), ndaman & Nicobar Islands (26,547) and Dadra & Nagar aveli (27,675) as shown in Statement 4.3. The states recording the lowest child population include Lakshadweep (5,3), ndaman & Nicobar Islands (12,950), Sikkim (,039), Daman & Diu (,649) and Dadra & Nagar aveli (21,521) as shown in Statement 4.4. For both rural and urban India, Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest child population and the lowest has been observed in Lakshadweep. EG states comprise 53.2 percent of the total child population in the country where the share in rural child population stands at 59.5 percent and for urban child population it is seen as 35.3 percent. mong the EG states, Uttar Pradesh has reported the maximum share of rural (20.6%) and urban (.3%) child population while on the other hand Uttarakhand has registered the minimum rural (0.8%) and urban (0.9%) child population figures. In terms of share of child population, Madhya Pradesh has secured the fourth position in rural child population with 6.9 percent and second position in urban child population by reporting a figure of 5.9 percent. 7 CILD POPULTION ( GE GOUP) 4.4 MDY PDES ND NEIGBOUING STTES Statement 4.7 shows a comparison of the rural and urban child population between Madhya Pradesh and its neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and ajasthan. In the cluster of the above mentioned states, both for 2001 and 2011, Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest child population in rural and urban areas while Chhattisgarh has reported the lowest. similar trend is observed for Madhya Pradesh which stands in third position in terms of rural child population and fourth in respect of urban child population both for 2001 and For Madhya Pradesh, from 2001 and 2011, there has been a percent decline in rural child population and a 2.61 percent increase in urban child population. The districts where the lowest figures are recorded include arda district at 68,026 followed by Bhopal (71,278), Neemuch (76,721), nuppur (79,769) and Datia (85,803) in ascending order as shown in Statement 4.8. 12 The gender-wise distribution in terms of proportion of child population in the rural areas can be studied from Statements 4. and 4. respectively. The ranking of the top five districts of the state in regard to proportion of male and female child population in rural areas shows a similar pattern where Jhabua is seen in first position with a share of 21.6 percent for male child population and 20.3 percent for female child population. owever, this is not the case when the bottom five districts of the state are taken into consideration. In terms of male child population, the lowest proportion is seen in Balaghat (12.8%), followed by Narsimhapur (.2%), Seoni (.3%), Jabalpur (.6%) and Chhindwara (.6%). On the other hand, the bottom five districts for female child population are Balaghat with the lowest proportion of 12.1 percent followed by Neemuch (12.8%), Seoni (12.9%), Mandsaur (.0%) and Narsimhapur (.1%). 24 4.8 CILD POPULTION (BSOLUTE FIGUES) IN DIVISIONS OF MDY PDES The division wise segregation for child population and proportion of child population, in the rural and urban areas, can be studied from Statements 4.49 and 4.50 respectively. This is pivotal in understanding the performance of the child population indicator across the geographical expanse of the state. ccording to the figures for child population in rural Madhya Pradesh, Indore is seen as the top ranking division across all three parameters; namely total child population of 1,490,023, male child population of 770,672 and female child population of 719,351 whereas Narmadapuram has registered the lowest numbers with a total child population of 361,326, male child population of 6,750 and female child population of 4,576. similar trend has been observed for urban child population where Indore is in the first position with a total child population of 497,054, male child population of 262,430 and female child population of 234,624 while Narmadapuram has reported the lowest numbers with a total child population of 89,545, male child population of 46,854 and female child population of 42,691.
