HANHAM HIGH SCHOOL POST 16 WELCOME TO ENGLISH LITERATURE A NEW DIRECTION

HANHAM HIGH SCHOOL POST 16 A LEVEL ENGLISH LITERATURE AQA EXAM BOARD Entry Requirements A Grade B in GCSE English/English Literature Studying AS and A Level English Literature at Hanham High School is an enjoyable and challenging experience. We do more than prepare students for exams: our aim through the critical study of texts is to encourage students to develop an inquiring approach to the world in which we live. Our more specific aims are to introduce students to a wide range of texts and to develop their skills of discussion, analysis and written expression. We value creative thinking very highly. Students often go on to study English Literature at university and other creative areas such as the media, education and publishing. English is a subject which enables students to access a wide range of courses and careers. Former students include Stephen Merchant, BAFTA prize-winning author of The Office, and Mathew Thorne who has had four novels published and has written a series of books for children. Our study texts are varied and engaging. They include prose, poetry and drama from sources as diverse as George Orwell, Jeanette Winterson, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Miller, William Shakespeare, Wilfred Owen, Jane Austen, Harold Pinter, Thomas Hardy, Margaret Atwood, Roddy Doyle, Emily Bronte and many other interesting authors. We are very keen to foster students independent reading. Lessons include shared reading and discussion, individual and group tutorials, student presentations and role-play, independent study and student-led seminars. If you are interested in reading, drama, creative writing or discussing ideas - or all four! - then this course is likely to interest you. COURSE OUTLINE At AS Level the students study two units and six key texts: Unit 1 - Texts in Context 2 hour open book exam 60% of AS marks 30% of A level marks

In Unit 1 students study one of the following options: - Victorian Literature - World War One Literature - The Struggle for Identity in Modern Literature Unit 2 Creative Study 2 coursework tasks 2500 words in total 40% of AS marks 20% of A level marks In Unit 2 students produce a coursework portfolio, selecting one prose text a novel - and one drama text from an extensive list of options. At A2 Level the students study two units and six key texts: Unit 3 Reading for Meaning 2 hours, 30 minutes closed book exam 60% of A2 marks 30% of A level marks In Unit 3 students answer two compulsory questions in response to unseen extracts and wider reading based on the theme: Love Through the Ages. The exam is synoptic - it tests the skills and subject knowledge developed during the 2-year programme of study. Unit 4 Extended Essay and Shakespeare Study 1 coursework task 3000 words in total 40% of A2 marks 20% of A level marks In Unit 4 students write an extended essay in which they compare three texts with a shared theme: any two texts of any genre, chosen by the student, and a Shakespeare play.

WHAT DO WE REQUIRE OF YOU? In lessons we want you to: Contribute to class discussion. Take and make notes - when necessary. Participate in all class activities, including presentations to your peers and shared reading of texts. Practise answering exam questions under exam conditions. Develop written coursework as part of independent study. Collaborate effectively with others in response to a range of activities. Outside lessons we want you to: Read and study set texts. Prepare for independent and collaborative work in lessons. Overcome problems - consulting your peers and teachers. Complete all written work and hand it in on time. Use the school library, Bristol Central Library, and ICT-based resources to carry out research and independent study. Visit the theatre independently and on school trips. Attend Sixth Form educational conferences. Read widely for personal interest and enjoyment, and to broaden your understanding of the set texts. Studying AS and A Level English Literature is stimulating and rewarding. The skills that you develop, particularly in response to the extended coursework essays and critical reading, are very useful in other areas of study. It is a course that helps to prepare you for Higher Education and for life.

ENGLISH This list is designed to help students make the transition from GCSE to A Level. The novels on this list are all of A Level standard and have been chosen partly for their literary merit and partly for their proven popularity. Read as many of them as you like, and think about the activities on the attached sheet - Your Reading Log. This is essential preparation for the course. Happy reading! NOVELS Listed roughly in the order they were written Pride and Prejudice Wuthering Heights Great Expectations Silas Marner The Mayor of Casterbridge Sons and Lovers The Sound of Fury The Grapes of Wrath Native Son Keep the Aspidistra Flying The Heart is a Lonely Hunter The Catcher in the Rye The Bell Jar Catch - 22 Slaughterhouse - 5 The Magic Toyshop The Life and Loves of a She Devil The Song of Solomon Cat s Eye Captain Correlli s Mandolin The Cement Garden Oranges are not the Only Fruit Seventh Heaven Paddy Clarke, Ha, Ha, Ha Jane Austen Emily Bronte Charles Dickens George Eliot (a woman!)
