Decisions and Guidelines The course was approved by the Faculty of Arts, Umeå universitet and the syllabus is valid from Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the course students should be able to: - account for and discuss contemporary challenges to democracy - describe and analyse problems and potentiality in the area of international human rights discourse - identify and critically discuss contemporary issues in relation to citizenship and gender Contents The course focuses on three main areas: democracy, human rights, and gender. Foundational issues for democracy are highlighted and problematized. Human rights are studied historically, politically and from the point of view of law, all from international and national perspectives. Contemporary theoretical issues within the field of gender and citizenship are studied. For the three main areas the study is guided by educational issues and global perspectives are looked upon. In addition an area for in-depth-study is chosen and more extensively studied. Instruction The forms of study are lectures, seminars and workshops. Examination To pass the course it is required that all compulsory parts are passed. The course results are defined by the examinator s
2 2 av 8 overall assessment of the student s learning outcomes. The course work is examined at the ordinary examination or re-examined at a later occasion during the same semester. An opportunity to re-examine the course work is normally given in the following semester provided the student has requested it. After that a student with a fail is advised to participate in the next ordinary examination. Re-examinations based on the same curriculum are guaranteed within the two years of the first registration on the course. A student has the right to change examiner for a course based on a written request to the head of department after two fails on the same course or a part of the course.
