2 Prologue The official language in Finland was Swedish for a long time. Therefore priests used Swedish in official church books until the late 1800s although the people might have been Finnish speaking. The given names in this research have been normalized. In other words the Swedish names have been replaced by their spoken equivalents probably used by the Finnish speaking families. A heritable surname system has been in use in Eastern Finland for centuries. In Western Finland surnames were not in common use before the early 1900s. People there generally used additional names that referred to the place of residence. After the new name laws in 1921, surnames became mandatory everywhere. Also before the 1900s people generally used patronymic names (e.g. Kustaanpoika = Kustaa's son, Kustaantytär = Kustaa s daughter). Loviisa Pyhtää Ruotsinpyhtää region (source: Map of Finland book).

There is no mentioning of Kalle's father. He moved to Ruotsinpyhtää (Strömfors) parish with his mother when he was only 10 months old. Kalle was confirmed in 1870 and the next year he moved to Pyhtää (Pyttis) parish to work as a farmhand. Most of the costal parishes were Swedish-speaking regions but Kalle however had a remark in the communion book that he was Finnish-speaking. Seven years later he returned to Ruotsinpyhtää with his wife Maria Sofia Laurintytär Ruotsalainen, who was born 13 July 1848 in Lampaanjärvi village of Pielavesi parish. 22 Nov 1880 they arrived to Pernaja (Pernå) parish where they had their first child Fanny Sofia at the Kukumi village. 29 Oct 1884 the family moved to Rutumi village in Lapinjärvi (Lappträsk) parish and 30 Nov 1886 to Elimäki parish, where they worked as lodgers. In other words they lived in other people's homes either for rent or for work. They probably had some connection to Valkeala parish as their son Einar Fredrik was baptized there. In 1892 they moved officially to Valkeala parish and Kalle started working in the Kymi Papermill which was founded some twenty years earlier. That factory site is located in Kuusankoski which was merged to Kouvola in Kalle Fredrik, born 11 Feb 1852 in Loviisa and baptized 15 Feb 1852 in Loviisa by Ruotsinpyhtää parish chaplain Kristian Fredrik Gestrin. 4 Anna Maria Kustaantytär Holmberg was born 27 Jan 1823 in Ruotsinpyhtää parish. At the time his father was working at Backas farm in Kulla village. Anna Maria moved 27 Oct 1847 to Loviisa city to work as a maid in the house no.29 located in the 8. Quarter. Her younger sister was already working in the same house. A map of Loviisa from the year 1837 can be found from the database of Heikki Rantatupa. The map is made by Claes Wilhelm Gyldén: In Loviisa Anna Maria gave birth to Kalle Fredrik in January 1852 and in November 1852 they moved to Ruotsinpyhtää parish to stay with Anna Maria's parents at the Vähä-Ahvenkoski (Lill Abborfors) village. In 1861 they moved to Keitala village as Anna Maria started to work as a maid at the Sundvik farm. There she met widower Yrjö Joonaksenpoika and the couple was married 26 Dec They didn't have any children together. In mid 1860s they worked in several farms at the Vähä-Ahvenkoski village as the last famine ("The Great Hunger Years") raged in Finland. In 1871 they moved to Tesjoki village to work as lodgers. Anna Maria died 19 July 1879 because of a headache. Yrjö died 19 June 1880 when he was staying in Helsinki.
