1 Mosquito Surveillance and Control Report for the Village of Riverlea May-July Kenton Ave. Columbus, Ohio T F
2 1 Mosquito Surveillance and Control Report Activity Report May-July 2008 (VDCI) provides a proven, scientific approach to mosquito control for the (FCBH). VDCI s operations include larval and adult mosquito surveillance followed by the application of larvicides and adulticides. In addition, our office responds to service requests from the public. Riverlea Mosquito Surveillance VDCI has utilized a total of one gravid trap in Riverlea, set weekly and placed in a residential area during this reporting period. These traps collected an average of 42.4 mosquitoes per trap night (466 total mosquitoes) during this time. There have been a total of 2 mosquito species collected, with Culex being the most predominant species. In reference to mosquito numbers, Riverlea s trap average of 42.4 mosquitoes is low compared to the average for all traps set throughout Franklin County, which currently average 72.9 mosquitoes per trap. Arboviral Testing Data All Culex species collected are tested for the West Nile Virus using the PCR testing platform, and are currently performed by the Ohio Department of Health. We have begun our in-house RAMP testing, starting with Culex mosquito pools that have shown a large jump in numbers. We RAMP tested the July 21 st Riverlea pool (14 total mosquitoes). This pool tested negative for the West Nile Virus. All pools will continue to be sent to the Ohio Department of Health for PCR testing as well. We are still awaiting some test results, but tested samples thus far have returned negative West Nile Virus results.
3 2 Mosquito Surveillance and Control Report Larval Control Activity Permanent water, flood water, artificial containers, woodland pools and drainage system sites are inspected for larval mosquito breeding on a regular basis. In total, approximately 1 site inspection in Riverlea found the presence of mosquito larvae. As a result of this inspection, 16 ounces Aquabac 200G, was applied to the mosquito breeding site. Additionally, VDCI is continuing to eliminate breeding habitat for artificial container mosquitoes by targeting bird baths, buckets, tires etc. Catch Basin and Storm Drain Treatment In June, treatment of Riverlea catch basin and storm drains was completed. Of the 47 storm drains/catch basins inspected, 8 were treated with Altosid XR due to water retention. These storm drains were reinspected on July 26 th. Service Requests To date, VDCI had received 2 service requests in Riverlea for mosquito complaints. Sources of complaints come through the FCBH s BITE line ( ), FCBH referral, other municipality agency referral (City inspectors), or through the FCBH web link to VDCI s . In response to this complaint, one site required larviciding. Adult Mosquito Control Activity In response to mosquito surveillance data and no West Nile Virus positives to date, adulticiding in Riverlea has not been necessary this reporting period. Summary The month of June has had a record high amount of rainfall, causing a higher mosquito population than normal in certain areas, especially in geographically low-lying municipalities. VDCI has focused on heightened control of larval populations, inspecting and treating problematic areas, educating the public and adult mosquito surveillance.
4 3 Mosquito Surveillance and Control Report VDCI will remain diligent in our surveillance and control activities to prevent a further significant increase in the mosquito population. Throughout the upcoming months, we will analyze trap data and test results to examine the necessity of adulticiding. As always, VDCI welcomes residents with any mosquito-related questions or concerns to contact Franklin County s Mosquito Control Program Bite Line at BITE.
