What is a Blackboard Survey? Blackboard Surveys are a tool to gain information from your students, and are similar to the Blackboard Test tool. Surveys are different from Tests in that all responses are anonymous, there are no correct/incorrect answers, and they are generally not graded. Why use a Survey? Surveys are useful in Blackboard for the same reasons they are used in everyday life. You the instructor can get feedback on your course or teaching style, as well as gather information concerning student opinions or viewpoints on sensitive topics for class discussion. It is important to remember none of the results will be tied to the student who responded. When should I not use a Survey? Surveys should not be used to schedule office hours, have students sign up for conferences, allow students to choose a presentation topic, etc. The reason is because you will not know to whom the survey responses belong. I need to assign a grade to my Survey. Is this possible? Yes, you can assign points for completing the Survey, but cannot grade individual questions. This is accomplished by modifying the Points Possible field for the Survey within the Grade Center. When a student completes the Survey, a checkmark will appear signifying they completed the survey. In order for points to be tallied, you must manually enter the points earned. It is easier to use the Test tool when points are required. Can I re-use my Surveys? Yes, both Surveys and Survey questions can be re-used in a course or amongst many courses. Surveys can be exported/imported between courses, or questions can be re-used within a course during the creation process.

Creating a Survey When creating a Survey in Blackboard you first setup the structure, and then add questions. Once your Survey is complete the last step is to deploy it within a content area on your course menu. 1. From within your Blackboard course, click COURSE TOOL from the Control Panel. 2. Click TESTS, SURVEYS, AND POOLS. 3. Click SURVEYS. 4. Click the BUILD SURVEY button to create a new Survey. 5. Enter a title into the Name field. The Description and Instructions fields are optional. 6. Click SUBMIT. Choosing Question Settings It is important to view these options before creating questions. You can always change these settings later, but it s easier to set them before creating questions. This is where you can: Enable images, files, and external links for both questions and answers Enable feedback for individual questions Choose default point values Enable partial or extra credit To manage these options: 1. Click QUESTION SETTINGS in the upper-right corner of the screen. 2. Choose your options and click SUBMIT. Click COURSE TOOLS Click BUILD SURVEY Click QUESTION SETTINGS Adding questions to your Survey There are three methods for adding questions to your Survey: create new questions, re-use questions from another Survey or Test, or import questions from a text file. Creating new questions Blackboard offers 17 different question types for both Tests and Surveys. These can be viewed by clicking the CREATE QUESTION button. In this example we will create an Opinion Scale/Likert question. 2

1. From the Create Question menu, click OPINION SCALE/LIKERT. Click CREATE QUESTION 2. Enter your question into the Question Text field. Enter a question 3. Choose your answer options underneath the section labeled 2. Options. 4. Since we have chosen an Opinion Scale/Likert question type, the answers are automatically entered for us. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click SUBMIT. Re-using questions from other Surveys and Tests Questions you have already created for other Surveys or Tests can be either copied or linked to your new Survey. 1. Click the FIND QUESTIONS button. Click FIND QUESTIONS 2. A new browser window opens to search and find questions. You may need to allow pop-ups for your browser. 3. Choose your Browse Criteria from the left side of the screen. 4. Decide to either copy or link your questions. Copy or Link your questions 3

5. Check the box(es) of the question(s) you want to add and click SUBMIT. Uploading questions from a text file This option is a more advanced feature for question creation. Blackboard requires you to create a tab-delimited text file. This option is not suggested for most users due to its complexity. Deploying your Survey After you have created your Survey and populated it with questions, the next step is to deploy the Survey to a content area for your students. 1. Open a content area from your course menu. 2. Click SURVEY from the Create Assessment menu. 3. Select your Survey from the list and click SUBMIT. Click SURVEY Make available Visibility options 4. The Name and Description are pulled from your Survey s settings. Scroll down to choose your deployment options. 5. Survey Availability a. Make the link available to your students b. Add an Announcement c. Specify the number of attempts allowed d. Force students to complete the Survey once started e. Set a time limit f. Choose if and when the Survey is visible g. Set a password 4

6. Due Date set the submission deadline 7. Self-Assessment Options include in Grade Center calculations 8. Survey Feedback decide what students see after submitting 9. Survey Presentation a. Decide number of questions shown at a time. Best Practice is to choose One at a time if your Survey contains more than 10 questions. b. Randomize the order of the questions 10. Click SUBMIT. Student Feedback Amount seen at once Reviewing Survey results All Survey results can be viewed and downloaded from the Grade Center. Find the survey column, click its action link and choose DOWNLOAD RESULTS. Action Link 5
