The content focuses on the building of composition skills, ensemble expertise, technical and design skills, singing and acting skills, audio, theatre production and set design/build, and development of an effective methodology for the preparation and practice required to facilitate professional behaviour and demeanour. You will be required to perform an operatic-based work of your ensembles creation in a studio setting before a live audience, demonstrating your level of achievement through ensemble performance. Learning outcomes At the completion of the unit, you should be able to: 1. Compose, choreograph, direct and design an operatic-based work for public performance. 2. Perform this work in a concert as part of an ensemble/cast that reflects your understanding of opera and associated vocal ensemble music repertoire, interpretation and style. 3. Work together to identify issues and devise specific strategies to enhance the rehearsal process 4. Apply vocal, dramatic and technical knowledge to develop ensemble cohesion 4. Always be committed in ensemble rehearsals 5. Keep a record of techniques and strategies used in rehearsals Assessment Assessment for this unit of study is based on attendance at all rehearsals, bump-in and technical runs and successful completion of the final concert performance. The unit is divided into to main tasks, as detailed below. The unit is assessed however as an ungraded pass.
3 Page 3 of 5 Assessment Details Task 1: Intensive creative and rehearsal/workshop sessions. Description: In this unit you will compose and prepare musical material for a final concert performance and develop musical, technical theatre and composition techniques specific to the project. As an ensemble/cast, your workshop cohort will be required to demonstrate progress and an appropriate level of achievement across the rehearsal period. You will need attend all sessions fully prepared and demonstrate an ability to interact and take on suggestions. You are expected to reflect upon and, where necessary, articulate the strategies used in rehearsal that are required to achieve the goal of a successful performance. Criteria/Standards You should be able to compose, design and perform a short operatic/vocal ensemble/choral work as part of and ensemble cast, reflecting the specific rehearsal techniques, performance requirements, and the processes required to achieve successful musical performance, including: Vocal production and articulation appropriate to the genre studied. Set design Audio design Choreography Sung dialogue Dialect and dictions Staging and direction NB: The evidence of effective preparation will be increasingly evidenced as the intensive rehearsal period progresses, as well as in the final performance of the repertoire studied. Task 2: Final concert Description/conditions: You will perform an original operatic-based work as part of the Wot Opera ensemble cast Task length: 1 major concert performance (minimum). Criteria/Standards You should be able to perform the specified concert repertoire and effectively execute the associated technical and staging requirements for your selected workshop choir/ensemble/cast. This performance will reflect the specific rehearsal techniques, performance requirements, and the processes required to achieve successful musical and theatrical performance, as covered during the semester rehearsals. Vocal production and articulation in the relevant vocal/choral style Diction and dialect Ability to perform as a cohesive ensemble unit Reflect an understanding of contemporary performance techniques and OH&S requirements Set design Audio design Choreography/rehearsed movement The criteria for successful completion of this task are as follows: Ability to compose and design an operatic-based work Ability to sing as part of a cohesive ensemble Ability to respond to musical direction Ability to respond to theatrical direction Level of detail of understanding what is required for an effective performance, and so what would be considered essential in a successful presentation
4 Page 4 of 5 Level of reflection explored in how rehearsal strategies affected the preparation of this work, and, as a result, the awareness of an emerging process of how to work independently in a small group situation Attendance requirements 100% attendance required. Lateness is noted as a.5 attendance Required texts, equipment As advised by tutor. You are required to have a rehearsal copy of all works to be studied Photocopies should not be used at Conservatorium performances, unless an exception to copyright applies, or the relevant publisher has granted permission for an authorized copy. You should make full use of library, CD and internet resources. Social responsibility attributes are essential as well for, when working with others, unless all members bear equal responsibility to contribute to the group s overall goals, the endeavour will not succeed. NB: The Faculty of Arts guidelines are that the following maxima should apply: Percentage/Grading Equivalents: The AVCC percentage/grading equivalents are used by the University of Tasmania and are as follows: High Distinction % Distinction 70-79% Credit 60-69% Pass 50-59% Fail 0-49%
5 Page 5 of 5 Review of Results and appeals All results for the unit are reviewed at the end of each exam period by the unit coordinator and then the Director of Academic Programs prior to the school s assessors meeting. At this meeting all unit results are discussed and reviewed before being approved by the chief examiner. Once approved the results are then submitted to the Faculty for ratification at the faculty assessors meeting. If you are not satisfied with your result please refer to the University s policies for review of assessment ( for information regarding the review options available to you. Academic Referencing In your written work you will need to support your ideas by referring to scholarly literature, works of art and/or inventions. It is important that you understand how to correctly refer to the work of others and maintain academic integrity. Failure to appropriately acknowledge the ideas of others constitutes academic dishonesty (plagiarism), a matter considered by the University of Tasmania as a serious offence.
