2 IODE system Established in 1961 by IOC of UNESCO Consists of over 60 NODCs and DNAs Objectives 1. To facilitate and promote the exchange of all marine data and information including metadata, products and information in real-time, near real time and delayed mode; 2. To ensure the long term archival, management and services of all marine data and information; 3. To promote the use international standards, and develop or help in the development of standards and methods for the global exchange of marine data and information, using the most appropriate information management and information technology; 4. To assist Member States to acquire the necessary capacity to manage marine data and information and become partners in the IODE network; 5. To support international scientific and operational marine programme of IOC and WMO and their sponsor organizations with advice and data management services. In the past mainly focused on physical oceanographic data, now also chemical and biological data.

5 Advance of Technology Historical data on paper or electronic media are at risk of loss or missing due to media decay, accident, etc. Recent computer is no longer support MT, cartridge, floppy disk, etc. Many papers or books not yet in digital form

6 GODAR Global Oceanographic Data Archaeology and Rescue One of global activities of IODE since 1993 To increase the volume of historical oceanographic data available to climate change and other researchers by locating ocean profile and plankton data sets not yet in digital form, digitizing these data, and ensuring their submission to national data centers and the World Data Center System

10 PICES Metadata Federation Objectives To create standardized metadata descriptions of national, institutional and agency databases and to serve those descriptions in a World-Wide Webbased, one-stop environment with search and delivery capability. Federation is a process of joining for mutual benefit.
