1 Title: The Reformation: What Was It All About Lesson Author: Megan, Debbie, and Dylan Key Terms: indulgences, 95 Theses, Protestant, Martin Luther, John Calvin, Sola Fide, Predestination, Sacraments, Justification Grade Level: 10 th grade World History II Time Allotted: 45 minutes Rationale/ Purpose To understand the formation of the modern Western world, students must understand how the Protestant Reformation drastically altered the political, economic, and religious landscape of the Western world. The effects of the Reformation continue to be felt the world over, in ways political, cultural, and personal. Understanding the causes and effects of the Reformation are necessary for responsible citizenship and for informed evaluation of current events. Key Concept(s) include definition: The religious atmosphere in Europe in the period prior to the Reformation was dominated by the Catholic Church and its theology, and included controversial elements such as the sale of indulgences and rule by quite worldly bishops and popes. Martin Luther s differences with the Catholic Church, centering on the nature of justification, opposition to church corruption, and the primacy of the Bible, led to in irreparable split in Christendom.

SOL: WHII.3a) The student will demonstrate knowledge of the Reformation in terms of its impact on Western civilization by explaining the effects of the theological, political, and economic differences that emerged, including views and actions of Martin Luther and John Calvin Essential Knowledge Essential Skills Conflicts that challenged the authority of the Church in Rome Merchant wealth challenged the Church s view of usury. German and English nobility disliked Italian domination of the Church. The Church s great political power and wealth caused conflict. Church corruption and the sale of indulgences were widespread and caused conflict. Identify, analyze, and interpret primary and secondary sources to make generalizations about events and life in world history. Analyze trends in human migration and cultural interaction Martin Luther (the Lutheran tradition) Views: Salvation by faith alone, Bible as the ultimate authority, all humans equal before God Actions: 95 theses, birth of the Protestant Church Guiding Question(s): What actions and trends, both by the Catholic Church and Martin Luther, led Luther to break with Rome? 3 Background: This lesson will be first in a unit on the Reformation and its impact on Western religious, cultural, economic, and political history. This lesson will come after a study of the Renaissance and before we dive into other streams of the Reformation (Calvinism, etc.) and the political effects (30 years war, Henry and VIII and the Church of England, etc.). Lesson Objective(s) (Please number): 1. Students will be able to identify the major causes of the Reformation 2. Students will be able to recognize the fundamental differences between Catholicism and Protestantism Materials: Handouts Explanation Cards Reformation PowerPoint KWL chart Explanation Cards activity instructions sheet Additional Materials/Resources: PowerPoint Elmo Procedure/Process: JUST DO IT! The Hook : Students will be instructed to begin a KWL chart about the Reformation

Processing Activity and Procedure -include directions, question frames, assignment detail to be given to students (these should all be made into explicit materials (e.g. see material A), and time estimates Check for Evidence of Understanding -Either Formal or Informal- (Checks Essential Knowledge and Skills) Just do it. Transition: Objective 1 Transition: Objectives 1 and 2 Students will enter the classroom and sit in groups according to the seating chart posted on the PowerPoint. Students are to individually fill out the KWL chart about the Reformation. 5 minutes. Class discussion after the students have had time to individually respond. A discussion about the classes knowledge about the Reformation will follow, leading into the introduction to the Reformation lecture. 5 minutes The students will learn the major issues and players that made the Reformation through the lecture. Special attention will be given to indulgences, pre-reformation Church theology, and Luther s biography, ideas, and actions. 15 minutes Periodic questions posed by the teacher to students as well as answering any questions posited by students. Understanding of this information, however, will mainly be checked by the following two activities. As the lecture concludes teacher will circulate the room, handing out the four sets of explanation cards (in envelopes) to the four groups. Teacher will also hand out activity instruction sheets while he explains the activity. 1 minute Using information from the lecture and their books, students will organize the explanation cards into four groupings: 1. Controversial actions of the Catholic church, 2. Catholic theology, 3. Protestant theology, and 4. Areas of agreement between the Catholic Church and Luther. Procedures will be modeled by the teacher prior. 10 minutes. Teacher will then ask each of the four groups to explain one Correct organization of explanation cards. Class discussion

5 of the four groupings to the class. This will also use this time to facilitate class discussion. 9 minutes. Modifications/Accommodations for Diverse Learners: Notes with blanks to fill in for the lecture portion Closure/Writing Prompt/Rubric: Class discussion on guided questions. What actions and trends, both by the Catholic Church and Martin Luther, led Luther to break with Rome? What distinguishes Protestantism from Catholicism? Materials: 1. Just Do It KWL 2.
