2 First in Finland Turku is the oldest city in Finland and one of the oldest in the North. The first written document where Turku is mentioned is from The fortress of Turku Castle has stood at the edge of the River Aura since the 1280 s.

3 A cultural hub of old and new Finland s only medieval cathedral, The Turku Cathedral, was consecrated in The first university in Finland, the Royal Academy of Turku, was established in 1640.

4 People of Turku The Turku region is the third largest urban region in Finland with 317,000 inhabitants. The official population of the City of Turku is around 190,000. Turku is a bilingual city. 5.4 % of the citizens speak Swedish as their mother tongue.

5 Turku area is characterised by its international dimension There are more than 100 nationalities resident in the area. 9,4 % speak languages other than Finnish or Swedish.

6 Ready, Study, Go Turku Turku has six higher education institutions with 40,000 students. One in four Turku residents is a student or a specialist in higher education. University of Turku is a high class research university, world ranking 205 (year 2013).

7 Going international The city of Turku co-operates actively with other cities in various city networks, in Finland as well as internationally. Turku has offices in St Petersburg and Brussels together with the Regional Council of Southwest Finland.

10 Center for growth Turku with its surrounding municipalities is a strong Baltic Sea Region center for growth. A versatile livelihood structure, high class education, culture and services selections, and the beautiful archipelago are an attractive combination.

11 Turku draws from its seaside location for both its economic life and events Ruisrock, Europe s second oldest continuously running rock festival, attracts the crowds to the Island of Ruissalo every summer.

12 City of culture In 2011 Turku was the European Capital of Culture, which has made Turku into an even more active and open-minded cultural capital.

16 Literacy, poetry and comics The main Library is a landmark of the city centre and a common living room for the citizens. Local libraries serve as multiform cultural centres. Events: the Turku International Book Fair, The Poetry Week in Finland Proper, Littera Baltica, Författarserien

17 Centuries of Christmas Peace Since the 14 th century, the Christmas Peace Declaration form Turku has served as symbolic reminder of Yuletide peace. Other important Christmas traditions are a Christmas tree in front of the Turku Cathedral, Christmas Market at the Old Great Square and a commercial Christmas Sreet.

18 Venue for movies West Finland Film Commission (WFFC) provides services for film, television and commercial production companies. In addition to stunning locations and a vast range of services, Turku offers the know-how and resources of an internationally acknowledged film and animation academy The Arts Academy at Turku University of Applied Sciences.

19 Kiss my Turku Turku is one of the most popular tourism and conference cities in Finland. According to 2014 statistics people stayed overnight in various accommodations in Turku (registered overnight stays). In addition to Finns, Swedes, Russians, Germans and Estonians had the most overnight stays.

20 Divided by a river, surrounded by islands The favourite tourist destinations continue to be historical ones, such as the Turku Castle and the Turku Medieval Market, which is organized every summer. Also the Archipelago and the River Aura and its vicinity continue to be tourist magnets. The restaurant life of the city is vivid and the supply is versatile. Many restaurants of Turku have been ranked as cutting edge in Finland.

21 Popular conference destination According to 2014 conference statistics Turku ranks as number four in Finland with 60 international conferences. Turku Convention Bureau, the congress unit of Visit Turku, promotes Turku region as a meeting destination and co-operates closely with the region s tourism companies.

23 The business structure is versatile The top fields are biotech, ICT, maritime industries, logistics, travel, and creative industries. The Turku region has 22,000 businesses and 130,000 jobs.

24 Turku is the heart of the Finnish maritime industry The world s biggest cruisers, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, were finished in 2009 and 2010 in Turku. Currently in charge of ship production is Meyer Turku Shipyard.

Nearly 4 million passengers travel through the Port of Turku each year. The Turku Airport can be reached from the city centre in 10 minutes.

33 Circular Economy sustainable growth and energy We suggest that: A national leading initiative is founded, through which leading circular economy areas are created and the development of the sector in Southwest Finland is supported.

34 Life sciences - driving export We suggest that: Bio and medical innovation units are set up for universities to act as a bridge between science and business. A national pharmaceutical development centre is set up in Turku.

35 Maritime Cluster Finnish Excellence We suggest that: Finland s maritime cluster competitiveness strategy is drawn up. Maritime and metal industry expertise and RDI activities are strengthened in Southwest Finland.
