You can also progress to a BICT(Honours) or Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) to pursue a career in research. If you find that research is the career for you, then you might want to also complete a PhD. Are there other unique experiences? The Games and Creative Technology major provides exciting material focused in the design, production and implementation of games and other creative technologies. You will gain experience in 2D and 3D development on a variety of real-world platforms, both individually and as part of a team. Alongside the major there is a selection of creative technology electives. A number of these electives are provided by the Human Interface Technology Lab (HITLab), which has a very close relationship with the School. These units provide you with opportunities to undertake creative and applied projects based in the fields of virtual and augmented reality. Introduced in first-year units and then reinforced throughout the units that make up the BICT are discussions about a number of pervasive themes: user-centredness and HCI; information assurance and security; professionalism (lifelong learning, professional development, ethics, responsibility, entrepreneurship); and interpersonal and communication skills.

4 How is the degree structured? The BICT uses a three-year specialist degree model. A specialist degree has students complete 24 units organised into two majors (2x8 units) and a minor (4 units) and four student elective units. The BICT encompasses a minor in information technology (shown in blue) and a major (shown in red) with the essential knowledge and skills required to be an ICT professional. You have a choice of two accompanying majors: Software Development (shown in yellow) with a focus on system design, development, integration and administration; Games and Creative Technology (shown in green) with a focus on software design and development with a games and creative technology orientation. All graduates will have a depth of knowledge in the areas of software design and development. Depending on your choice of major, you will also either have a depth of understanding in systems integration and administration or in games and creative technology design and development. Does the ACS recognise the BICT? The BICT has been developed in consultation with the Australian Computer Society (ACS), and professional-level accreditation will be sought after there have been some graduates. It is anticipated that graduates of the BICT will be eligible for full membership of the ACS. How long will it take to graduate? The BICT will take a minimum of three years full-time study. The degree can be studied part-time over a maximum period of seven years. How will the units be taught? The teaching pattern for each unit you study will be different. All units will involve some face-to-face classes in the form of lectures, workshops, tutorials or laboratories. Some units will deliver content via packaged online learning modules followed by interactive face-to-face classes. Teamwork and problembased learning will be a focus for many units. What is my weekly commitment? The contact hours for each unit will vary. There can be up to six hours of face-to-face classes a week. It is recommended that no matter what the teaching pattern for a unit is that you be prepared to dedicate 10 hours per week on average to each unit. This will ensure that you have sufficient time to complete all the necessary classes, self-study and assessment tasks. Most of the units involve tutorials or laboratory classes. Each class can only accommodate approximately students, so the class is repeated many times throughout the week and you will be able to choose which class time to attend. Review the university timetable to identify when your classes are available: student.admin.utas.edu.au/coursesenrolment/timetable

6 Eliza Ralph Solution Architect Graduated: 2005 Employer: Knowit Oy Location: Helsinki, Finland As a solution architect I take a holistic view of software projects when I find myself working closely with the customer and the development team in developing enterprise-level solutions. I lead an onshore and offshore Russian development team where we embrace the agile/scrum methodologies. The parts of the job I enjoy most are the consulting aspect in driving customers towards their IT strategy and involvement in large enterprisescale projects. I enjoy how there are many constituent parts that make up the whole. On leaving UTAS, I found I was well equipped with the necessary skills to delve into customer engagements and consulting work. I took my education further and I m currently studying a Master of Science (majoring in bioinformatics) at the University of Turku, where I am researching genomic variations in next generation sequencing data. Where can I study the BICT? The BICT is available on both the Sandy Bay campus in Hobart and the Newnham campus in Launceston. Some units will use flexible delivery strategies including packaged online learning modules or recorded lectures allowing students to complete some learning off campus. Some units will use videoconference facilities to deliver content to both campuses. What facilities are available? The School is a cross-campus school, with state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities on both campuses. Students will gain experience on a variety of hardware platforms. There is wireless communication available on both campuses. School facilities and resources are available to students 24 hours per day, seven days per week. In 2015, students undertaking the Software Development major will have access to a state-of-the-art server administration lab which will allow students to fully experience the practical aspects of being a systems administrator. As an essential part of their study, students undertaking the Games and Creative Technology major have access to a laboratory that houses console hardware. This lab is used both for learning to think critically about game creation and for the student s own implementations. In Launceston, students undertaking the HITLab elective units will engage with highly advanced technology the VisionSpace: a three-screen immersive stereo projection system enabling groups of people to view and interact intuitively with a computer-generated world. Am I eligible? Admission to the BICT at UTAS requires qualifications equivalent to the 12th year of schooling in Australia. In particular, Tasmanian students require a Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE). It is recommended that students have an ATAR of 65 or above; students with scores above 50 may be eligible. Students who do not meet these requirements may enrol in a UTAS Foundation Studies Program, such as the Bachelor of General Studies (ICT Pathway) or the Associate Degree in ICT. While no prerequisites apply for the degree, students who have not successfully completed TCE MAP5C Mathematics Applied, or an approved equivalent unit, or a higher level mathematics subject, are recommended to complete a mathematics foundation unit such as KMA002 or KMA003. Similarly, students who have not successfully completed TCE Computer Science (ITC315108), or an approved equivalent unit, or a higher level programming subject, must complete either KIT001 Preparation or KIT101 Fundamentals before commencing KIT107. International Students The English language requirements will be those established for most UTAS undergraduate programs, as shown on If you have already completed some tertiary level study you may be eligible for a credit transfer. Students who are given more than eight units of credit transfer enrol in a bridging unit (KIT209) that covers a range of topics that relate to ICT professional practice in Australia. The unit will also provide an introduction to school and university processes, teamwork and communication skills that local students typically learn in the first year.

7 Are there any linkages with TasTAFE? If you have completed a Diploma of Information Technology Networking (ICA50411) or a Diploma of Information Technology (ICA50111) then you will be eligible for up to seven units of credit towards the BICT. If you have also completed an Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Technology (ICA60511), you will be eligible for up to a maximum of ten units of credit towards the BICT. If you are interested in concurrently completing a Diploma of Information Technology Networking, an Advanced Diploma of Computer Systems Technology and a BICT, then there is a four-year program available. What happens after I apply? Offers of places in the BICT are made via and mail. When you receive an offer, it will outline how to accept the offer and what happens next. It is recommended that all new students attend a Ready for Uni session at their nearest campus. This information session provides a chance to learn more about the administrative functions of being a student and you have the opportunity to complete your enrolment for the units you will be studying. All new students are invited to attend Orientation prior to commencing classes in the week before semester. How do I apply? If you would like to find out more information about the BICT, contact the School. Freecall: Secretary@cis.utas.edu.au Web: The staff can assist you by phone or , or you may prefer to make an appointment for a face-to-face discussion. When you have decided to enrol, you can complete an application online at UTAS reserves the right to limit enrolments in high demand units and courses, so act early to avoid disappointment. You should allow between 30 and 60 minutes to complete the application and it is recommended that you have any dates and documents of previous study handy. How much does the degree cost? Information on current course fees can be found at Australian Students HECS (Higher Education Contribution Scheme) fees will apply for all units. Eligible Australian citizens are able to defer their HECS fees through the HECS-HELP system; however, NZ citizens will be required to pay these HECS fees upfront. For detailed information on eligibility for Commonwealth supported places and HECS-HELP visit International Students Detailed information on the fees, refund policy, and rules of admission are available on the UTAS International Students website on matthew woods Quality Assurance Lead and ICT Manager Graduated: 2004 Employer: Location: Myriax Pty Ltd Hobart I am the Quality Assurance Lead for Eonfusion and Eonfusion Flood, and the ICT Manager of Myriax. Eonfusion is a software application for the 4D analysis and visualisation of time-varying spatial data. Eonfusion Flood is an interactive hydrodynamic modelling product that allows for particle and grid-based modelling. I am responsible for setting and monitoring the quality standards of Eonfusion and Eonfusion Flood projects. I enjoy managing the testing resources, building test cases that push the limits of current computing power, and engineering scenarios that can break assumptions before code is written. UTAS gave me the techniques to learn and understand the fundamentals of information technology, together with the understanding that the learning never ends. The software engineering project gave me invaluable insight into the software development lifecycle and a set of close friends that I still have to this day.
