SEE DETAILED UPDATES BELOW INDUSTRY UPDATES/ALERTS AFRICAN SWINE FEVER BREAKS OUT IN KALULUSHI Suspected African swine fever has broken out in Kalulushi District in the Copperbelt Province. A number of pigs were slaughtered and burnt at a named farm by the Veterinary Department. The Veterinary office in the district has confirmed this development. Another pig farmer, who is a member of, had 11 pigs slaughtered and incinerated last weekend by the Vet officers. This development has saddened many pig farmers in the district and surrounding areas and has appealed to government to quickly intervene and save the animals. ARMYWORMS PUT UNDER CONTROL The armyworms which attacked the maize fields in most parts of Mumbwa have been put under control though most farmers had to replant the crop to cover up on the damaged areas. Farmers have been more alert this season and hence they knew which pesticide to use to fight the destructive pests. A check in Kantupu, Kamisamba and Nachibwe areas which were badly affected has good crop stand. FRA COMPLETES PAYING FARMERS IN KAZUNGULA Following the public announcement by the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock regarding the completion of payments to farmers by government for maize and rice supplied to FRA for the 2014 marketing season, Kazungula district which was among the least paid districts in Southern Province, has finally received all the funds meant to pay farmers from FRA. Farmers who have been deprived of purchasing inputs in good time have however expressed dissatisfaction and criticized government for the late payments. NEWS FROM THE ASSOCIATIONS PHILIPPINES ANNOUNCES MULTIPLE POULTRY IMPORT BANS Agriculture Secretary in the Philippines, Proceso J. Alcala, has issued four separate orders which temporarily ban the importation of domestic and wild birds, including their products such as meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen.the bans apply to products from Vinh Long and Tra Vinh, Vietnam; Veneto, Italy; Ter Aar, Zuid-Holland, and Kamperveen and Utrecht City, the Netherlands. The orders were issued following confirmed reports from the Office Internationale Des Epizooties (OIE) of outbreak of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza virus serotype H5 in Vinh Long and Trah Vinh, Vietnam, and highly pathogenic Avian Influenza virus serotype H5N8 in Veneto, Italy; Ter Aar, Zuid-Holland, and Kamperveen and Utrecht City, the Netherlands. Aside from restricting the entry of poultry products, Alcala also called for the immediate suspension of processing, evaluation of application, and issuance of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) import clearance for the mentioned

2 products from said places. Alcala likewise ordered that with the exception of heat-treated products, all shipments of abovementioned commodities shall be stopped and confiscated at all major ports by Department of Agriculture and veterinary quarantine officers/inspectors. ( DOMESTIC POULTRY PRICES AVERAGE DAY OLD CHICK PRICES Graph1; shows the price of different brands of day old chicks in selected towns. The price of day old chicks in the towns has been static the past one month. Hybrid day old chicks are still being sold at promotional prices. Graph 2; shows the national average price trends for day old chicks for the past seven months from June 2014 to January It can be observed from the graph that the average national price of day old chicks has significantly increased since week one when it was at ZMW4.58 to ZMW4.75 in week 21. The reduction in price from week 21 onwards was due to promotions being run on some brands. It should be noted that some variations in the trend are caused by continued changes in the sample size of towns being considered. AVERAGE LIVE BIRDS PRICES Graph1 below shows the average live bird prices in Lusaka, Choma, Kabwe, Chipata, Mongu Mansa, Mufulira, Chingola, Solwezi and Livingstone. Compared to last week, the price of live birds has been static in all towns displayed with no significant changes. Graph 2 on the other hand shows the national average price trends for broilers, layers and village chickens. The graph shows that the average national price for live birds has been static the past three weeks from week 25 to week 27. The average national price for Broilers has been at ZMW32.82 that for layers at ZMW30.59 and that for village chicken at ZMW48.45.

3 AVERAGE EGG PRICES Graph1 below shows average retail prices of table eggs in selected provincial centres around the country. The price of eggs has not changed over the course of the week in any of the towns displayed. Lusaka is posting lowest price at ZMW19 and Solwezi is posting highest price at ZMW24. Graph 2 shows the price trend for eggs over a period of seven months from mid-june 2014 to January The graph shows that average national price of eggs has been static for a period of two weeks in week 26 and 27 at ZMW This was a price increase from an average of ZMW22.23 in week 25. AVERAGE WHOLE DRESSED CHICKEN PRICES Graph1 below shows average prices of whole frozen chickens in the three chain stores around in Lusaka. Spar has the highest average price at ZMW19.45 with the lowest and highest priced frozen whole chicken in Spar going for ZMW17.50 and ZMW21.40 respectively. Pick n Pay has the lowest average price for frozen whole chickens at ZMW15.92 with the lowest and highest going for ZMW15.45 and ZMW16.39 respectively. The average price of frozen whole chicken in Shoprite is ZMW17.72 with the lowest going for ZMW15.49 and the highest going for ZMW It should be noted however that chain stores are running promotions on some brands of frozen whole chicken.

4 Graph 2 shows the average prices for beef, chicken and Pork products in the three chain stores in lusaka. The graph shows that frozen chicken is the cheapest protein at ZMW17.69 per kg compared to a minimum of ZMW28 per kg for pork, ZMW26 per kg for fish and ZMW60 per kg for t.bone. Graph3 shows the average price trend for whole frozen dressed chicken in Lusaka from June 2014 January The graph shows that the average price of whole dressed frozen chicken in Lusaka has been static for a continuous period of three weeks from week 24 to week 27at ZMW AVERAGE FEED PRICES Graph 1 show average weekly feed prices in selected towns.the average feed prices have remained relatively stable the past seven months. The graph below shows the average poultry stock feed prices with Lusaka posting the lowest prices in terms of feed compared to other towns. Kasama and Solwezi are posting the highest prices for broiler feeds. The graph further shows that pullet feeds are generally lower than broiler feeds. No price statistics for pullet feeds have been captured for Kasama while only layer mash prices were captured in Chipata and Livingstone. Graph 2 shows the national average price trend of feed prices for a period of seven months from june 2014 to january Prices of feed have been relatively stable with no significant changes registered in the towns displayed. Fluctuations between week one to week eleven are mainly due to changes in the sample size being considered.

5 NOTE; For all prices for poulty in this upate please visit website: NEWS FROM THE REGIONS COPPERBELT REGION FARMERS APPRECIATE USE OF HERBICIDE Small scale farmers in Mpongwe are happy with introduction of herbicides on the Lima Credit Scheme pack. A visit at one of the farms in Mpongwe last week showed that small-scale farmers had now learnt the art of using herbicides. Mr. David Mwape, a small-scale farmer in Misangashi area of Mpongwe West, said that he had been a beneficiary of the Lima scheme for three years and his maize yields had tremendously improved from two tonnes before he started using herbicide to over six tonnes per hectare WESTERN REGION HIGH INPUT SALES CHEERS FARMARAMA Farmarama in Mumbwa has experienced high sales this season on the part of herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers and veterinary drugs as compared to the previous season and this has since cheered management. Sensitisation messages on weed management, pest control carried out in the various parts of the district and encouraging farmers to buy the Agro requirements from reputable suppliers has been one of the contributing factor to this rise in sales. Farmarama supervisor Mrs. Ngosa has thanked CFU and officers for encouraging farmers to get their Agricultural requirements at Farmarama because they are guaranteed quality products. EASTEARN REGION FARMERS ON EFSP PROGRAM FACE DOOM Farmers on the Expanded Food Security Pack (EFSP) in Nyimba this year face doom. The District Community Development Officer explained during the Community Development Committee meeting that there has been a problem with the funders. During the EFSP information dissemination farmers were told late in the season that the ministry would not supply farmers with fertilizer and maize seed. Instead they would receive Cassava, Groundnuts and Sweet potato vines. Farmers have been encouraged not to refuse taking up what they will be given to ensure food security in homes. However, the information was not received well by farmers. The affected farmers complained that the information came late.
