1 Las Vegas-Clark County Library Virtual Library (Library page) (ebook page) Library ebooks on your regular Kindle - These instructions are NOT for a Kindle Fire, using the App. Before you do anything else, do FOUR things 1. Make sure your library card is up to date. You can call the Library and they'll check it for you: Keep your library card handy - you'll need it! If your library card is expired, or there s a problem, please visit your library, with your picture ID, to get your card up-to-date. 2. Make sure you live IN Clark County, Nevada. Unfortunately, our ebooks are not available for folks who live in other counties in Nevada, or in any other state. If you live in Henderson, you'll need to use the Henderson Library website: (But these basic instructions will still work for Henderson!) 3. ON YOUR HOME COMPUTER, go to Amazon.com, and log in to your Amazon account. You should see: Once you're logged in, you can minimize that page. We'll need it later. (#4 is on the next page!) 1 of 18

2 4. Turn on your WiFi, and connect your Kindle to your WiFi connection. Note: the Kindle DS does NOT have WiFi capability. If you have a Kindle DS, you ll need to use the "no WiFi" directions. Look to the left of the little battery symbol on the top of your Kindle. If you see a row of dots, or the word "OFF", WiFi is NOT on! If you see "3G", 3G is on - this is NOT what you want! When the WiFi is on, you'll see the word WiFi. If you don't have WiFi, it's OK. We'll tell you what to do, when it's time! Page 2 of 18

3 Getting Started: On your home computer, turn on your Internet, and go to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District's web page: On the bottom of the page, in the Quick Links box, look for the words "emedia Catalog". Click that. You can also go directly to the emedia Catalog: You will see this page: Page 3 of 18

4 Checking out an ebook: Pollyanna Grows Up is my "practice book". Type "Pollyanna" in the search box in the upper right corner: Then click on the "Magnifying Glass" to the right of the box, or tap "Enter" on your keyboard. You'll see three books: Notice the little symbols in the upper right of the cover. The little book symbol means that's an ebook (that you read). The little headphone means it's an eaudiobook (one you listen to.) All these little symbols are black - that means there are copies available to check out now. If the symbol is pale gray, that means there are no copies available right now. You can add your name to the waiting list. Page 4 of 18

5 Hover your mouse over the cover of Pollyanna Grows Up (the one on the far right). That will give you options You can Borrow the book right here, or find out more about the book. Click "More" in the bottom right, to find out more about the book. You'll see the main page for the book. Note the "Available Formats" on the right. Confirm that "Kindle" is one of the formats (If you don't see "Kindle" in the "Available Formats," you can't read that book to your Kindle.) Click on the "Borrow" button, to the right of the cover. You'll need your library card. Page 5 of 18

6 The computer will ask you to log in. It will ask for three things 1. the library district where you LIVE, 2. your library card number, 3. and your zip code. When it asks you to "Select Library:" If you live in Boulder City, select "Boulder City". If you live in NLV, select "North Las Vegas Library District." If you live anywhere else in Clark County (except Henderson), select "Las Vegas-Clark County." If you live in Henderson, go to: If you live in another county in Nevada, or in another state, go to your home library's emedia page!) Enter your library card number and zip code, then click "Sign In" You'll see your emedia Bookshelf, with the book you just checked out. Click, "Download (Select one format)" to the right of the cover. Page 6 of 18

7 You'll see a drop down box with the available formats. Click next to "Kindle Book" (you'll see a green check mark), then click "Confirm and Download". The computer will take you to your Amazon.com page: ask@lvccld.org Check to be SURE you're logged in to YOUR Amazon account. (This is really important.) Look for your NAME at the top, your address in the green box at the right, and the name of your kindle in the white box. NOW click "Get Library Book." Page 7 of 18

8 Amazon will take you to a "Thank you!" page. The next time your Kindle connects to WiFi (NOT 3G!), the book will pop into your list of books. Stop Here! This page confuses a lot of people! You'll see a GREAT BIG "Download NOW!" button. You should IGNORE that, unless you don't have WiFi. If you do NOT have WiFi, go to Page 9. If you have WiFi: You're DONE with your computer for right now. Go get your KINDLE, turn it on, and click the HOME button. You'll see the titles you currently have on your Kindle. If you have WiFi, your new title may be there already! Click on the title and start reading! Go to Page 16 to find out how to remove books from your Kindle, or return books to the library early Page 8 of 18

9 Transferring books if you don't have WiFi: Plug your Kindle into the computer. You can click "Download Now" from the "THANKS" page. Or, you can start the transfer when you click "Confirm and Download" on your emedia page. The computer will take you to the Amazon.com page. Be sure your NAME is to the right of the search box, and your ADDRESS is in the Green Box, under "You are signed in as..." Page 9 of 18

10 Under "Deliver to:", you'll select "Transfer via Computer" from the drop-down list. Then click "Get Library Book." Amazon will ask you which Kindle you're going to send this to. Select the correct Kindle from the "Deliver to" list, and click "Continue." You'll get a "Thanks!" page, with some instructions: This is part of the web page This is a popup window that will appear at the bottom of the page. It takes a moment. Page 10 of 18

11 Note: these pictures are for a Windows computer using Internet Explorer. If you're using a Mac, or another web browser, what you'll see will be different. If you have any difficulty, call us! You're going to want to do a "Save As". Look for the down-pointing arrow, to the right of the SAVE button. Click that tiny arrow, and you'll see a list of choices. Select "Save As". The computer will bring up a "Save As" window. Look for "Computer" or "My Computer" on the left: Below "My Computer", you should see your Kindle (if you remembered to plug it in to your computer. If you forgot, plug it in now, and it should appear under My Computer in just a moment.) Click on "Kindle", under My Computer, and you'll see the folders inside your Kindle: Page 11 of 18

12 You want the "Documents" folder. (This is REALLY important!) Page 12 of 18

13 Double click the "Documents" folder. You'll see all the books you have on the Kindle. Make sure it says "Computer - Kindle - Documents" at the very top. Then click "Save". If it doesn't say "Documents" at the top, you won't be able to read the book on your Kindle. The yellow window at the bottom of the page will flash a couple of messages. Then it will tell you that the download is complete. Click the "X" at the far right to close the yellow box. Don't click "Open" - just click the "X" at the FAR RIGHT. Page 13 of 18

14 Eject your Kindle from the computer. You can eject your Kindle using the little "Up" arrow, in the lower right corner of your computer. Click the little connector plug with the green check mark. It will tell you when it's safe to unplug your Kindle. Or you can Eject from the Start Menu, in the bottom left of your computer. Click the START button, then click "Computer" (on the right). RIGHT CLICK the Kindle: Select "Eject" from the list. Page 14 of 18

15 Reading your newly transferred book: (Yes, I know this is a different book! It's OK!) Click the "Home" button on your Kindle, and you should see the title at the top of your list of books. Click on the title of your book, and start reading! Page 15 of 18

16 Removing or returning Kindle books early. At the end of your checkout period, you'll get an , and the book will come off your library card automatically. You don't need to do anything! No fines, no overdue books! You can REMOVE a Kindle book from your Kindle by right clicking (or touch and hold) the title. When you see the menu of choices, click "Delete this Book". This does NOT return the title to the library. It only takes it off your Kindle. Page 16 of 18

17 You can return the title early online, on your Amazon.com page. Go to and hover your mouse over "Your Account", or touch "Your Account." Select "Manage Your Content and Devices" from the drop-down list: Make sure the "Your Content" tab is highlighted. You'll see all the books you have on your Kindle: Page 17 of 18

18 Look for the "Actions" button, next to the title you want to return. It will have three little dots. Click that, and select "Return This Book." Amazon will ask if you REALLY want to return the book: Say "Yes". You'll see a spinning circle, then you'll see the list again, and the book will be gone. We hope you enjoy your library ebooks!
