1 Admissions, Recruitment and Marketing Service Recruitment and Outreach Department STUDENT LEARNING MENTORS Ref: SC2711 The Post The post holder will be one of two Student Learning Mentors based in the Outreach team within the University s Recruitment and Outreach Department (RAO). The role holders will work with students from eight Norfolk schools that have signed up to the Scholars programme. The interactions will range from ongoing mentoring support, masterclasses, through to residential summer schools which take place over several days. The role will be undertaken within the framework of an agreed training and development programme and the role holder will be closely supported and in the delivery of tasks and activities. The Student Learning Mentors will report to the Programme Manager who reports Outreach Manager. Recruitment and Outreach Department RAO engages with prospective students, their parents and teachers to promote the benefits of higher education and studying at the University. RAO is responsible for: Providing higher education advice to potential applicants through our schools liaison and attendance at higher education fairs within the UK or the European Union. Delivery of exciting events for Able, Gifted and Talented students aged including summer schools, subject courses and special university lectures. Organising an extensive range of outreach activities to raise aspirations and increase participation in higher education. Producing the University s Access Agreements and supporting our Widening Participation strategy. Organising University Open and Visit Days and other corporate recruitment and outreach events such as our Teacher Conference and the Norfolk UCAS Fair. Responding to enquiries from, and distributing prospectuses and other literature to, prospective students. Recruitment and Outreach is based within the Admissions, Recruitment and Marketing service area, which is one of the main administration service areas within the University.

The precise duties will be agreed in discussion with the Manager. Person Specification The person specification for this post is attached as Appendix B. Training There will be ongoing training both on campus and off campus delivered in partnership with Villiers Park. This may include occasional residential training nationally. Support from a Programme manager during the year Support with developing and personal development plan Opportunity to attend a number of in house training sessions run by CSED Training in giving presentations and preparing content for interactive sessions Opportunity to attend external conferences Opportunity to develop marketing materials and use of social media GENERAL Salary Salary will be 18,031 to 20,198 per annum on Grade 4 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date The posts are available from 1 September 2015 on a full-time basis for a fixed term period of 1 year. Terms and Conditions of appointment Full details of terms and conditions of employment for Secretarial and Clerical staff will be made available to the candidate to whom the appointment is offered.

3 There is no expectation that the Code of Practice relating to Fixed Term Employees will be followed at the end of these posts, but the Human Resources Manager will write to the Student Learning Mentors no less than four weeks before the end of the contract, to confirm the termination of employment on the grounds of Some Other Substantial Reason (SOSR). Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of 20 days plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. Disclosure and Barring Service This appointment will be subject to a criminal record check at Enhanced level from the Disclosure and Barring Service. 6 APPENDIX A JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Student Learning Mentors Grade: Grade 4 Department: Reporting to: Recruitment and Outreach Department Programme Manager Outreach Office PURPOSE OF ROLE To develop a personalised and supportive relationship with a group of year 10 students through to year 13 students from Norfolk based schools with high academic potential from less advantaged backgrounds participating in the Villiers Park Scholars Programme. The programme objective is to maximise their academic potential, enabling them to gain access to a leading university or other centre of excellence and to have developed the life and study skills needed to thrive once there. This will be achieved through a series of interactions including Mentoring, Masterclasses and Summer schools. The role will be undertaken within the framework of an agreed training and development programme and the role holder will be closely supported. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES To develop one to one mentoring relationships with students identified as Scholars, meeting them on a regular basis to discuss progress according to termly objectives. To set realistic targets and implement strategies that reflect Scholars abilities, strengths and stretches, with objective of raising attainment, aspirations and self-esteem. To develop, organise and attend Scholar and peer group meetings. To record and monitor the progress of Scholars and to liaise with teachers on a termly basis to ensure that the school/college and Scholars are compatible. To maintain clear and consistent expectations of Scholars whilst in school/college or attending outreach activities. To develop, organise and attend outreach activities that are part of the Scholars Programme ensuring students routinely access these events. To participate in training and the sharing of best practice opportunities with other Scholar Programme teams.
