1 M_D GCIV Luxembourg, the 1st October 2015 INVITATION Dear all, It is my great pleasure to invite you to a seminar on Communication Satellites for European Defence and Security: Challenges and Opportunities, which will take place on 25 November 2015 in Betzdorf (Luxembourg) in the framework of the Luxembourg Presidency of the European Council. The Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Minister of Defence, Mr Étienne SCHNEIDER, will give the opening speech, followed by key-note speeches from the European Defence Agency, the European Commission and the European Space Agency. The programme also foresees 2 panel discussions on best practices, challenges and opportunities for satellite communications in the military and the security domain. The European Council identified Satellite Communications as one of the critical capability shortfalls to be addressed through concrete projects by Member States, supported by the European Defence Agency. It welcomed in particular the preparations for the next generation of Governmental Satellite Communications through close cooperation between Member States, the European Commission and the European Space Agency. Satellite communications are indeed critical elements for defence, security, humanitarian aid, emergency response or diplomatic communications. Satellite communications, as well as space technologies, space infrastructures and space services in general are domains that are particularly well suited for fostering civil-military synergies through common/dual-use solutions able to address the demands for both security and defence and to contribute to strengthen the European Defence Technological Industrial Base. Venue The seminar will take place in the headquarters of SES - Château de Betzdorf, Rue Pierre Werner, L-6815 Betzdorf. The venue is located at 22 km from Luxembourg City and 13 km from Luxembourg airport. 2
