1 Name: Alice Anani Garcia Chapter: Mu Beta Chapter, United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, NY Fun fact: I ve been to 40 of the 50 states at least once and a handful of countries. I go to a new state and/or country every year and this year I m lucky enough to go to two new countries- Panama and Israel! Hobbies: Traveling, cooking (I m a bit of a foodie), reading, exercising (Swimming & Hot Yoga), and spending time with my family, friends, and my dogs (Doberman and Boxer/Bulldog) Profession: The common thread in all my jobs, both military and civilian, has been leading people. I m currently in HR as the Employee Experience Director. About me: I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where I lived until I graduated from high school. People often ask me why I joined the Army and the answer is simple- a desire to serve. That desire was instilled in me by both my parents and my maternal grandparents because I saw the sacrifices they made to give their children a better life. They are my heroes. In addition to stressing the importance of putting God first and getting an education, they taught me to always give back, strive for excellence, and never forget where I come from. Service to our country is in my blood as my dad served in the Army and Air Force during Vietnam and my younger sister also served in the Army. I served on active duty as an Army officer for over 5 years, which took me first to South Korea along the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) where I was a Platoon Leader. Next I managed the operations at the San Antonio Military Entrance Processing Station while earning a MA in International Relations from St. Mary's University. I was 1 of 5 officers selected to be a West Point Admissions Minority Outreach Officer, where I traveled the country representing Admissions at minority focused college fairs and national conferences. I made the difficult decision to leave active duty in 2009 and joined USAA as part of the inaugural Junior Military Officer Career Development Program. I started out leading an insurance team of senior specialists and then served as the chief of staff for the Chief Financial Officer. Now I m responsible for providing the voice of our 26k+ employees to our CEO and senior executives and leading the internal employee grassroots communication channel. I m also a core volunteer leader in our internal employee veteran group, which aims to foster an even greater employee understanding of the military culture. In my free time I love to travel and I m always up for an adventure! I try to go back to New York at least once a year because it s like a second home to me.
