The behavior of the PCM is a natural process that can not be regulated directly. The diagram above illustrates the heating and cooling periods of two laboratory measurements at the FH Münster. It shows how the heat absorption of the PCM panel differs from those without a PCM filling. With a PCM panel, the room temperature takes much longer to achieve a certain value at a constant heat input than without. In this case, the PCM filling of the ceiling panels absorbs the energy and therefore the increase of the room temperature is delayed for 3 hours. Combination with a normal radiant ceiling The diagram shows the heat-up and cool-down phase of the PCM panel during a laboratory measurement. At the beginning of the measurement the room temperature showed 17 C. Over a period of 5 hours a continuous thermal load was placed into the room with radiant heaters and without air conditioning until a room temperature of 3 C was reached. At this time, the PCM was completely liquid. By switching on the cooling, the PCM panel releases the stored heat over a period of 3.5 hours up to 9%. For the remaining 1% it needs also only 3.5 hours. This demonstrates that Metawell panels with PCM are able to recover completely within one night. This type of measurement corresponds to the jump-and-answer method, which was developed by the FH Münster and described in the VDI* guideline 1, which allows a comparison of different PCM radiant ceilings.
