1 1 DESCRIPTION: INTELLI-RAY Heating panels are fabricated with intelligent heating elements. This means that has the panel temperature increases, the electric current decreases; the result is a faster temperature rise and a reduction of current which translates in energy savings. Radiant heating is softer, more uniform, more efficient, more comfortable and more economic to operate compared to baseboards heaters, convectors and all the other systems that use the air to transmit the heat. Because of its smooth surface, the heat transfer is much more efficient. The insulation behind the heating elements is used to direct the heat where it is required. The heating panels are rigid and very light weight. A single person can make the installation, even with the 10 feet long panels. The system operates at very low temperature. It is very safe, even when installed on wood, there is no risk of overheating because the intelligent heating element auto-limits its temperature. It is the technology of the future. It does not require any physical space in the room. Once the installation is completed, it is an invisible heating system which is silent, without any mechanical parts. It does not require any maintenance. RADIANT HEAT PRINCIPLE: The heat transfer can be compared to the sun. It heats people, objects and surfaces without heating the air directly. All the surfaces become warm so the air temperature increases when it comes in contact with these warm surfaces. Since this system does not heat the air directly, it does not dry the air. If it does not heat the air, it does not circulate the air this means it does not circulate dust. ELECTRIC WIRING: In a residential installation, the feeding wire used is NMD type and it connects all the heating panels in parallels up to the thermostat. The wire size required must be # 12 AWG and the ground wire is #14 AWG. You have to strip 3 to 4 of the NMD wire, outside jacket without cutting the conductors. The two brown connectors connect to the black and red wires (240V) or black and white wires (120V). The blue connector connects the green wire to the ground wire. After the connections are completed, you install the wire cover which is fastened with the supplied screws in the holes provided. You seal the 2 ends of the plastic cover with silicone RTV # 122 or equivalent. In a commercial or industrial installation, the wire type used is BX #12AWG. You must provide the proper BX connectors that will be fastened to the junction box installed in the commercial / industrial series of heating panels.

2 2 The power feeding the heating panels will be supplied through a circuit breaker, receptacle, temperature controller or other, equipped with a ground fault protection system (GFCI) or by a GFCI electronic thermostat. Warning: All electrical wiring cables must be routed at least 2 from the heating panels to prevent damage or overheating of cables. Warning labels are supplied and must be installed on the electric panel and the controllers to identify that radiant heating panels are installed. TESTING: When the installation and the wiring are completed and before it is covered with gypsum or other finishing products, you must apply temporary power and touch each panel. If you feel the heat, the heating panels operate. You can also take the amperage at each panel. If there is current passing, (varies with the temperature) this means that the panels are working. INSTALLATION IN CEILINGS: The outside ceilings normally consists of an insulation of R31 minimum, a vapour barrier, the INTELLI-RAY heating panels are installed between 1 X 3 16 c.c. then the ceiling finish, normally gypsum is screwed to the furring. The thickness of the heating panels is the same as the furring so there is a perfect heat transfer between the heating panel and the ceiling finish. For the inside ceilings (non insulated), you install the heating panels between the furring, you install a glass wool R6 value (2 ) over the panels only (see Fig. E) then you cover with the ceiling finish. When the system is utilised as principal heat source, we need to make a heat loss calculation to determine how many panels are required to maximize the efficiency. When installed as principal heat source, the ceiling finish must not exceed 2 gypsum thickness of ½ (R 0.45, RSI 0.078) or or one gypsum ½ thick plus one ¼ plywood (R 0.76, RSI 0.13). These panels are very light weight. They can be installed easily by a single person. It is very important to spread out the panels evenly in the ceiling. First you cover the cold walls and then you spread evenly the balance of panels required by the heat loss calculation. When installing the heating panels, it is recommended to keep all the wiring ends on the same side. This will facilitate the electrical wiring. When the system is used as secondary heat source (example; installation in perimeter of a building or when installed over a window etc.), there is no need for a heat loss calculation. You just install the panels where you require heat. In this case, the

3 3 thickness of the ceiling finish is not limited but greather the R value is, the more it will reduce the efficiency. The heating panels shall be fastened to the furrings by using the flat supports (Fig.M) or the L supports (Fig.L). The wiring shall be as (Fig.D) and as described the paragraph electric wiring on page 1 and also (Fig. A or B) Warning: The heating system must not be used to dry the joints in the gypsum. It must be turned off until the joints are completely dry. If you use paint as finish, you must use a latex or water base paint. Cellulose insulation is not recommended unless it meets or surpasses CGSB 51 GP-60M standard. The system is normally controlled by a GFCI electronic thermostat. You must never use a pulsing thermostat (Minimum cycles must be not less than 15 minutes) because it would prevent the intelligent system to adjust its power output. A thermostat must be installed in each room in the most appropriate location.( Never install a thermostat on a cold wall.) INSTALLATION UNDER FLOORS: A very important advantage of the INTELLI-RAY heating system is that it can be installed under existing floors (retrofit). It is also very easy to install in a new construction. When the system is installed under floors, it is always used as a secondary heat source which requires no heat loss calculation. You install the panels in specific areas where you want to feel the heat. It is very important to well prepare the surface area where the panels will be installed. You must remove all obstacles such as nails, screws etc. You might even need to sand some rough areas to make a smooth surface. Remember, better the contact is, better the heat transfer will be. You must fasten the panels under the floor with screws (Fig.K) or with L supports (Fig.L) or in U (Fig.M). The wiring shall be made as (Fig.G) and as described on the paragraph Electric wiring on page 1 and also (Fig.A or B). To control the temperature, you can install a GFCI electronic thermostat with a remote sensor that could be installed in a notched grooved under one heating panel. You can also control the system with an ambient air thermostat installed in the room. (Minimum cycle of 15 minutes)

4 4 If you install the system in a new construction in which you plan to install a ceramic covering, you must wait a minimum of one week before you energize the system. This would leave the necessary curing time for the joints and grout to dry. If the floor covering is a linoleum type finish, you must verify with the product manufacturer that the adhesive they use is compatible with this type of heating system. INSTALLATION OVER THE FLOOR: For the installation over the floor, there are two ways. In both cases, you must install furrings at 16 center to center on the floor. You install the heating panels between the furrings with the insulation facing down and the heating plate upwards using screws (Fig.K anf Fig.H and L) For floating floors (12 mm minimum thickness) you just lay down the floating floor which rests on the furrings. For hard wood covering, you nail down the boards to the furrings. For floors that have a natural stone, ceramic tile, granite or other, you must install a concrete fibber board (minimum thickness ½ ) that will be screwed to the furring than you can install your floor covering on top of the fibber board. (Fig.H and L) You control the heat the same way as Installation under floors. For the wiring see (Fig.H) and for the connections, see (Fig.A or B). You must wait at least one week for the joints and the grout to dry completely before turning the system, on. INSTALLATION IN WALLS: You can use INTELLI-RAY radiant heating panels in many specific applications. In a new construction or a renovation, it is very easy to use these heating panels to increase the comfort or to solve heating problems. Examples; before installing the gypsum in the bathroom, in the back of towel support bar, you can install a heating panel that, once the installation completed, will be invisible and will act as a towel warmer. You can improve the comfort level in many applications such as elderly people s homes, hospitals, kinder garden and others. You can also install these heating panels in areas like the walls that consists modern shower, which can be of ceramic tile, stone, marble or other materials. These areas

5 5 normally produce cold sensation, which are very uncomfortable. You can install these panels in any wall to improve the comfort. You can also make combinations like ceiling and walls, walls and floors, ceiling and floors etc. You can fasten the heating panels using L supports (Fig.L) as shown in (Fig.F). The thickness of the finishing material used such as gypsum, ceramic tile, marble etc. is not limited but the greater the R value is, the more the efficiency will be affected. The wiring shall be as (Fig.H) and as described in the paragraph Electric wiring on page 1 and also (Fig.A or B). To control the heat, you can install an electronic thermostat (Cycles 15 minutes minimum) that has a ground fault protection (GFCI) and which the sensor could be installed in a cavity that you make in front of the heating panel. You can also use an ambient air thermostat in the room (Cycles 15 minutes minimum) see typical wiring (Fig.F). INSTALLATION UNDER CANTILEVERED FLOORS: In an outdoor cantilevered floor, the installation is made the same as in the installation under the floor but the area must be properly insulated. For inside concrete floors in a poorly or non heated area, you must remove all the imperfections in the concrete before you install the heating panels. (the best example for this is a floor located just above a multi level underground parking). To fasten the heating panels you must use L supports (Fig.L) or U supports (Fig.N) The wiring is made the same way as (Fig.H) and as described on the paragraph Electric wiring on page 1 and also (Fig. A or B). You control the heat the same way as Installation under the floor For a better efficiency, you can have additional insulation sprayed over the heating system.
